KI took out the loop to be able to use lighter trains on SOB but the thing i don't understand is the fact that the park is who chose to take out the loop not the people who were over the inspection of the ride and the thing is the people over the inspection didn't even mention any thing about using a lighter train for the coaster insted they thought the park would just need more support on the piece of damaged track so any way using lighter trains would inable less stress on the track and call for a smoother ride. So does that answer your question Dale the Purple?

I rode it last year and I almost cried going up the hill, but it wasn't that bad. I thought it was so cool. Didn't like the loop, though. Too much jerking around.

If taking out the loop to allow for a improved train with a little more leg room and perhaps a little more smooth ride then I am all for it. The loop is not what makes this ride one of the top wooden roller coasters, its the height and speed which makes this impressive looking coaster top of the line.

the reason they took the loop out to make lighter trains is because last year they had a wreck on it and it sent like 27 people to the hospital fortunately only 2 people were admitted 25 were treated and released the same day.

Will you "PLEASE" get the SOB up and running again!? I have been to KI several times since the season started, and not once have I seen anyone working on SOB. It makes one wonder if they even want this ride to run again. NO one ever seems to know what is going on at KI, and they always have plenty of excuses, none of which makes any sense. Why don"t they just get the damn thing running and be done with it, instead of slow walking everyone?? I understand the safety factor, but it has been almost a year now, and its rediculous that its taking so long. Kings Island used to give you fun and thrills for your hard earned dollars. Now they charge high prices and give you disappointment after disappointment, and all the while the owners laugh all the way to the bank!! Wake up owners, its people like us that puts the money in your pockets, don't you think its about time that you started giving us our money's worth??

Hello guys, I have a particular connection with the park, so I may be able to answer some of your questions : ) Son of Beast reopened for the 2007 Season on July 4. It's "new and Improved" trains are not new and actually belonged to a ride called "Hurricane: Category 5" at the Pavillion Park in SC, which sadly no longer exists (Both the park and the coaster, sadly). Hurricane was the largest wooden rollercoaster in SC until they trashed it last year. The newer cars were designed for a rollercoaster with a top speed of 55mph, and now run on a monster that still reportedly races at almost 80 mph, so naturally your hopes for a smoother ride on SOB are all in vain. It still remains in my opinion "the most violent rollercoaster in the world" and shows me little improvement in smoothness over the old PSV cars. It is true that the loop was removed for these "Lighter" trains, however, it took specially designed cars to run the loop in the first place, something these new cars are NOT. Now the following is merely speculation, but if you give them more time and continue to support your (and also my) disdain over the removal of the loop, I THINK it might be possible in the long run (I mean a few years time) they could, back behind closed doors try to design newer trains that CAN run the loop. These trains they have now COULD just be something to hold people over until something better can be done. As for the lame "bunny hop" section of track that is the loop's replacement, I don't think it would be too hard to remove again, given they still have the parts to the loop INTACT in a nearby warehouse : )

a awsome ride not as good as the father but good. it ... s that there isnt a loop anymore but o well kindve jerky in some spots. but not worth a 3 hour wait which i waited if you have too only ride when the line is between 0-45 min wait but you usually have to wait 15 min but hopefully its a walk on then is worth your time

Son of beastm was Extremely rough. The Loop was the smoothest part. Now that the loop is gone they can have lighter trains. they also strengthened the structure so it isn't as rough. The ride finally re-opened July 4. And I ca't wait to ride it and see If the ride is any better.

The Son of Beast is up and running. I didn't ride it cause its very big when you get up close, one of the biggest structures in the park! Person before me, it is NOT the worlds only wooden roller coaster! Theres like like four others in Kings Island, and MANY more in the world. Did you mean only wooden coaster with a loop? I hope so. Cause you must be an idiot if you think its the worlds only wooden....lol

GUYS!!!!!!!! I will clear things up. I work there and have ridden it like 20 times in the last month. The ride still is rough however is VERY VERY SMOOTH if you ride in the VERY FRONT seat in the BLUE TRAIN. The red train is much rougher than the blue one. Also, any other part of the trains besides the very front seat is rough.
Today I rode it 8 times and once in the back half of the train. I was screaming in pain from the violent jerking. However, it is now my FAVORITE ride in the park because the front seat of the blue train is just that much smoother and better. You can ACTUALLY ENJOY the ride.
One last thing. Tests were done recently: Son Of Beast's top speed is now 85mph with the faster trains and other modifications. The 78mph stat is old.

kyle nobody ever or at least to this date has died on Son of Beast, Kings Island chose to take the loop out on their own, the cause of the accident was a cracked support beam, and the old trains were heavier because they had to have a type of upstop wheels that would be strong enough to hold the train in an upside down position just incase the train got stuck in the loop and the wheels added to the weight of the train and made the train alot heavier where the new trains don't need those wheels and another reason the new trains weigh less is because they are only six two row cars insted of the first trains that had six three row cars insted

hey i have road son of beast 20 times and it is not bumpy!it actully masasosis my back!and i love the son of the beast! but it s kinda boring with out the loop!but i have to say that son of beast is the best rollar coaster in the world! keep it up sob!p.s i cryed when i found out that they where closing it down .but they had to take the loop off because people got stuck up on the top of it and fell out and 1 person died and 25 other people went to the hopitle and they got broking necks.

this is my story of how i got on sob the first time.........................................this is how it went.me and my friend lexie where gonna ride top gun.and then we did not know which line the top gun line was in!so we got in son of beast but i backed up and said that i was scared and that my mom and my sister and her mom and her siter where waiting for us then she pulled me up in line then she and me went on in the very back and i started crying but when i went down the hill i stoped and said it was fun but when the loop came up i said this is the best ride ever and then when we got off we tould our sisters and moms that we road it and they said wow you really road that really big thing?and we screamed YES!!!!!and then they started walking and we both took lexies sister and we road it with her.and she thougt it was horribule!but me and lexie did a high five and went to another ride!!!that is the end of my story!

when i rode it with the loop and the old cars, i always came off with bruises. And i hated this ride because the loop was the only good part about it. Now with the new trains, its alot smoother and the whole seat is padded. I love it. I would rather come off and be able to walk then ride a 2 second loop

For me, this ride used to require Advil before and after the ride. I've heard it's a bit smoother now since they installed new trains. I'll find out in a few weeks, I guess.

I rode the Son of Beast for the first time yesterday. I've wanted to ride it ever since it first opened but the times I've been there, in the past, the ride was always shut down for repairs. Unfortunately, I was unable to ride it with the loop. As far as the ride, it was okay. It was a little bumpy, which left me with a slight headache afterwards, but that went away several minutes after I got off of the ride. Later that evening I rode the Beast, and that left me with a pounding headache. For some reason it was so much more shaky and bumpy than I ever remember. I think that's the last time I ride both of those rides. I think I may just stick to the steel coasters at King's Island from now on. :)

i LOVE this ride, i haven't rode since they took out the loop though. [i rode about a week or so before the incident] it was good fun, but the bumpyness really took out a lot of the excitement. this ride would be the BEST out of all i have ridden if it didnt bump so much, i couldnt even see where the ride was going it was so bumpy.

Ok ,so once i rode this roller coaster when i was little and it was so itense and harsh they took it down like right when i got off i loved it though i will never forget that day when i rodeon it with my mom and how we were screaming and laughing and being jerked around.........but i dont live in Ohio my cousins used to live there so we went out to see them.........now they live in Delaware!........! I only ride this once every year:
1. It's line is usually long
2. It's too intense to NOT give you a headache, abdomen bruises, and chest pains

I am gonig kings island in a couple of weeks and when i go I am going to ride this coaster. I just went to Myrtle Beach 2 weeks ago and we went to a new Amusment Park its name is Hard Rock Park and there is a coaster named Led Zepplin The Ride I rode it. It has 155 foot drop and I rode it 6 times I love it. But when I go to ki i will see if I like this one more.

No one died on this ride. However, some friends of mine were on the train that had the accident. They said that when the accident happened a couple of people did bite through part of their tounges...ouch...i've ridden this ride twice...back when it opened...my knees are just too long for me to be comfortable

The son of the beast did not mess up at the loop. It messed up at the big helix after the drop. The reason it messed up was because in order to have the loop they had to have extra heavy trains. The extra heavy trains cracked the track. So in order to have lighter trains they had to get rid of the loop. None of that stopped me I still ride it today.

I am going to KI tomorrow and this is definetely the most anticipation I have ever had for a ride since the first time I went to KI last year to ride The Beast. SOB is a great ride that I have been waiting to ride forever. Last year it was closed and I was mad. There isn't a day that goes by I don't think about riding it. I AM PUMPED TO RIDE !!!!!!!!!

i went yesterday with a church group, and we rode this ride. it was pretty good, i mean if i had to wait 20+ minutes in line i wouldn't have liked it but we just walked right up to an open seat. the ride was pretty rough, it does give you a headack. bu that first drop made it all worth while. :]

Yeah its a very rough coaster. But guess what.....ITS WOODEN!!!! Yeah maybe you've been on some smooth wooden coasters before, but in my opinion it adds to the fun. I also had the chance to ride it with the loop, and i had the best time of my life. When I discovered thats they were removing the loop, i was very sad.

oh gosh, i was 6 when they were building this. rode it at the age of 8 as my first coaster. :D one of the most terrifying moments of my childhood but it's also the reason i'm addicted to coasters. lol i'm going to miss the loop but it's just as amazing without it. (:

ok beleive it or not i was on the ride when that women got hurt.. what happen was when we got through the helix turns she yelled OMG STOP THE RIDE STOP THE RIDE because appearently one of her blood vessuls in her brain like popped and she was rushed to the hospital....my dad also works at kings island and he told me that he thinks that they will either take it down and rebuilt it so its smoother and take it down and replace it with a different coaster

On June 16, 2009, a 60-year-old woman claimed that she suffered a head injury from riding the Son of Beast. Her visit to the park was on May 31, 2009, but the first Kings Island officials did not hear of the incident until June 16. She said that she suffered from a burst blood vessel in her brain and was put in intensive care. "The first we heard of this was on June 16. Her visit was on May 31 and there's no record of going to first aid for anything here at the park," said Don Helbig, public relations manager for Kings Island. Helbig also said that there have been no other reports of injury on the ride this year. The Son of Beast will be shut down as a precaution during the investigation. "At this point it would be inappropriate to speculate on an exact date when the ride may reopen. We're going to do a thorough maintenance review. We're going to work with the state of Ohio on that," said Helbig. [8] As of July 8, the ride remains CLOSED to the public because of it still being under investigation.

this IS the second time son of beast is SBNO. the way i see it, they've already taken the loop out, replaced the trains, and tried to save it the best they could. maybe it was never meant to be. time can only tell.
what a shame, it's a good woodie, no matter how bone-rattling and deadly it is :)

ok, just saw philly's response. well OF COURSE the woman is going to have a head injury when she's out riding intense woodies at AGE 60! they should have an age limit on coasters, and they do tell you not to ride if you have health issues for a reason. they should have SoB physicals before getting in line. ha ha :)

sad that anyone is even going to think about reopening son of beast again!! it is obviously a problem and i don't thinkthey are going to open it... if it were made of better quality wood i might like it. and drake i think and HOPE it will be taken out... i'd hate to see anyone else get hurt on it!

The Son Of Beast has been one of my favorite coasters since it opened in 2000. It is very fast, fun, exciting, and I love it with and without the loop. I hope the ride reopens soon. I will truly miss it if it's removed from the park.

derrike, i dont think my wish will be granted - not that i want SOB to close forever, it's just that everyone has probably heard of what happened to that one woman (had an anurism) and thats the sad part. if SOB was made from better quality wood it would be a great ride, but a friend of mine had to go to a chiaropractor afterward because of the roughness! by the way Mama Beast- its not just from Flight Deck that you can see the cracks, and also the beast is not anywhere near as rough as SOB :-)

I think the best thing they could do is recycle some of the wood and referb it into an Intamin engineered prefab woody! El Toro in NJ is fantastic, smooth and on top of all that, the best wooden coaster I've ever ridden. Just imagine what they could do with the space that they'd have for SOB!

i havent riden the son of beast before! i was going to this year but they closed it! i know why they took out the loop... cuz they need lighter trains so the timber wouldn't break cuz of the heavy trains! so i was planning on riding it but i couldnt cuz they closed it! they only reason they closed it cuz some lady got hurt on it! she probably had problems if she hurt her head! the only people who get hurt on that ride is people who have probems with their hearts of heads, or if they just got surgery! i dont think they will take out son of beast bcuz it is millions of dollars and it is the tallest and fastest wood roller coaster!

the loop was takin out cause the pressure of the heavy trains cracked and warped the wood that little support and the steel loop came up off the track about 2-3 inchs causeing a very deadly jolt the steel could push the wood cause its stronger and heavyer than wood

Great coaster ,I have riden it with and without loop many times. I was upset to see it not running 2009! You know maybe new shock absorbent seats or padding in trains will sufice those who complain about it being rough. This was done in a few parks with older wooden coasters. Son of Beast needs some tlc and it is ok,, too bad there are those people looking to get a easy buck and ruin a good time for everyone.

I have ridden the Son of Beast many times. To me it's rough but not rough enough to hurt me in any way. I have been praying for a while that the Son of Beast will reopen. Those who can get injured on roller coasters shouldn't even be riding them. I would love for the Son of Beast to reopen.

they took out the loop because of the 2006 accident the cars were to heavy so it split the wood and we think it was because of the loop the lighter trains they put in and now the loop is gone

Anyone think the rumors going around of a "timberliner" train being used on SOB in 2011 to reopen are true? Gravity Group has seen much success for their debut with it this coming year at Holiday World... It could work very well to reduce the stress on the coaster; and also reduce injuries and such. It's a coaster car that SOB needs to be able to opperate!

There has never ever been a coaster since that for some reason made my eyes water like this one. I loved it but just a few complaints: Leg and foot room (not fun for fokes 6'3 and up), and it beats the holy s##t out of you LOL. But it's always fun to take on the SOB!

the son of beast will be shut down either all or some of the 2010 season ever since the acsident back in june anyway the park manager said that they are trying to get the the ride to be more enjoyable moreless shacky and they said they were thinking about taking the double helix out of the ride i hope to see it open by the end of the 2010 season or in 2011 season

i am glad they have closed it down. I am sorry poeple who love this ride but i think it should be TORN DOWN. I know people that have rode it and have made it off safley (they got lucky) and they had bruises for it. I think that if it is going to hurt people and even kill them it should NOT be opperating. I dont care if they are fixing it i still don't think they should have it

@syh, if son of beast wasn't safe, then the ride would have never been cleared to reopen, which it was.
@jesse, nobody has died on son of beast, plus this latest accident doesn't even have proof, for or against, it being son of beast fault. i believe the fix that cedar fair did soon after the park was purchased really worked as far as, "keeping people safe"

I have ridden SOB many times since it was open i am 72 and still love it its a shame they had to take the loop out that was always fun a lot better and since that it has never been as fun beast is ok but sob is way better i still come to KI every Sunday all summer just to ride Beast but i use to ride them both RIP SOB if you were a fan of SOB i suggest Firehawk for any thrill seekers out there dimond back is nothing

my wife and i rode son of beast when it first opened 15 times in a row and it was awesome wery sad to see its current shape but if it is not safe then maybe total removal is best learn from your mistakes and build another one

I don't think they need to scrap the ride. They need to remove the track and lay steel rails on it (similiar to what the Gemini at Cedar Point has) and use the cars that the diamond back has on it. That would make it a very smooth and very comfortable ride without doing away with ALL of the wooden coaster aspects.

If they added the steel rails to son of beast I would be real mad. A traditional woodiee does not include those pipelike steelrails, and I thought gemini is actually even rougher than traditional woodiees. I really hope that they don't demolish the ride, and I hope they deside to put back in the loop with safter features added to the ride!

I rode Son of Beast several times the first two years it was opened and I thought it was great! Yes it was a little rough but so are ALL wooden coasters. I didn't notice any difference at all in the being thrown around a little from Son of Beast or any other wooden coaster. It is expected. The only difference is it's a LONGER ride, so you have to endure it for a little while longer as opposed to other coasters. Kings Island gives warnings; to be a complainer is lame. If you don't like it DON'T ride it, it's that simple. What a shame it's closed

oklemme put my 2 sence in.... i have never rode sob in my life of living. i have seen videos of that ride and it looks awesome. but i listened carefully at that ride but it sounded freaky. like the chains were popping. and i heard hat a woman fell off of that ride. and i went 2 ki a couple days ago and i saw son of beast, and it looked so creepy and sad lookin at it just sittin there by its self.

I hate to be the odd one out of the bunch but I would be glad to see SOB go. That ride injured 27 people and almost killed 1. Guys the thing jurked the crap out of people. They tore down the sign awhile ago. the only possibe thing would be a new logo or tearing the wholle thing down. And I'll admit I have never ridden SOB or the father. But every blog and youtube video Ive seen said it was torture.

I would really love 2 come 2 Kings Island one day 2 find out that the Son of Beast will reopen. When I received the news that it closed, I was disappointed and shocked that it had 2 close again. It is my favorite roller coaster and I can not wait 2 ride it again if it will reopen. Lately, i have dreamed at night that I went 2 Kings Island and found out the Son of Beast has reopened and I really hope that my dream comes 2 life! That is how much I love SOB!

i was just recently at kings island. And we went to ride Flight Deck. (top gun) and The Sign for SOB is no longer there, like the big wooden crate that said Son Of Beast. Yeah, its gone. Its just a big patch of grass now. :(

son of beast is permanetly closed. there tearing it down during the off season and putting in a new ride. the new ride will be like swings that spin you around and lift you up 300 ft in the air.
