Brady Bunch at Kings Island

The Brady Bunch filmed an episode of their hit show at Kings Island, in the summer of 1973 (Kings Island`s second season). The episode is #106 and is titled "The Cincinnati Kids." It aired in the fifth season of The Brady Bunch on Friday November 23, 1973.

The filming in the park took a week, and was causing big disruptions to the huge crowds that had come to the park to catch a glimpse of the actors. The cast stayed at the Kings Island Inn right across from the park, and many cast members were confronted with leering fans and peeping toms.

The Brady Bunch was actually the second television show to film at the park, with The Partridge Family having filmed at the park in 1972. However, the Partridge episode was based mostly at the Kings Island Inn, and thus they only shot in the park for two and a half days. Both the Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch were produced at Paramount Studios. Paramount happened to be a large shareholder in Taft Broadcasting. Both the park and Paramount Studios saw filming at the park as a way to promote the park as a sideline investment.

The name of Kings Island is never verbally mentioned in the episode. Mike Brady mentions that he is taking the family to Cincinnati because his company has developed plans for an expansion in a large theme park there. However, the name Kings Island can be seen in the episode. O utside the main entrance, you see a Kings Island Inn bus pull up with signage on its side, as well as topiary shrubbery trimmed to say " Kings Island ." The name is briefly visible on the front of a flume boat, but very briefly. The only other time the park name is featured is at the end, during the show's credits.

VH1 produced a Pop-Up version of the Kings Island episode. Jeffrey Siebert sent in the factoids about the park to VH1 when they were compiling the show. Interestingly enough, VH1 is owned by Viacom, which owns Paramount Studios (Brady Bunch producers) and Viacom also owns Paramount Parks (Kings Island owners.)

-In those days, Coney Mall ended where the High Striker game is currently located. Halley's Comet was positioned there and can be seen in the episode. The park expanded Coney Mall just a few seasons following this episode.

-The boardroom featured in the episode is an actual boardroom at the park. However contrary to popular belief, it is not the one in the International Restaurant facility. It is in the administrative building and its decor remains in tact today just as shown in the Brady Episode.

- The Enchanted Voyage can be seen although HB Land was not used in any of the filming. If you look closely as Marcia and Jan are running with the plans, you can see the giant TV Set Facade in the background.

- Of course the Football Toss game is still present at the park, but notice the difference in the size of the hole. The hole you must toss through today is only about 2/3 the size of the one in the episode. In other words, they made it harder for guests to win.

- As Greg and Peter run down International Street , pay attention to the front of the shops. The midway was much more narrow then with "yards" and street-scaping in front of the shops. The park later removed the landscaped areas to help de-congest the walking path and eliminate the amount of "accidents" guests were having. (Guests would often not pay attention and trip or fall over protruding curbs resulting in twisted ankles and broken legs and lawsuits.)

- The Gingko trees that lined Coney Mall (that were uprooted and moved from Cincinnati 's Coney Island ) were still being meticulously trimmed in their cylindrical shape then. The park has since lost many of the trees and the landscapers ultimately stopped shaping the trees in order to save the few remaining trees.

- The music in the episode included carousel band organ music. And yes, it was recorded from the KI carousel. Depending on the day, and what reel they have in, you can still occasionally hear the songs used in the Brady episode playing on the PKI Carousel.

Like many of you, my childhood memories of summer are defined by trips to Kings Island. Now I live in California and have two boys, & I look forward to sharing the experience with them someday. One of my best KI memories is riding the Beast during a thunderstorm with my boyfriend (now husband). One more comment-- I miss the Screamin' Demon! The way the staircase shook with every launch of the coaster added to the experience-- a real thrill ride in those days. That drop when you were on the backwards run was the very best for sending your heart up through your throat! And hey, somewhere I think I still have my "The Beast: I rode it!" button that I proudly wore to school in third grade in 1980.

Anyone notice the editing bloopers in the Brady episode? The Bradys are riding the racer on the right side (when both trains went forward.) the camera cuts, then they are on the left side. And on the log flume, when Marcia and Jan are at the top of the hill, the line queue is full of people. When they got to the bottom of the hill, the camera cuts and the queue is empty.

I really like Kings Island. I really miss the antique car ride, but the Italian Job is pretty cool. I like the mini coopers. If the Brady Bunch cast came back to Kings Island, they'd probably have some great memories of the place.

I was an editor of the Middletown Journal. We sent a fun loving reporter named Boo Izor to cover the Brady Bunch filming at KI. She got so involved with the stars that she stayed at the park two days. She ended up actually being in the episode as one of the many adoring fans who were included in the taping. Yes, her face was left in the final edited version, which aired coast to coast.

This was great to read about...it's nice to know how fun Kings Island was back then...everything was so innocent...however, now that I am older and a lot wiser I can still enjoy with my Kids.

I worked at Kahns Sausage house when they filmed this episode and got "Greg's" autograph!! It was fun getting this episode on DVD and seeing all the sights again. I especially liked the clothes on the people and showing my kids what was stylish when I was their age - look for the guy in the plaid pants!! HE was groovy!!

There is one other blooper in the Cincinatti Kids episode. At the very beginning, the family splits up to go their separate ways (Greg with Peter and MIke, Carol with Alice, Marcia with Jan and Bobby with Cindy. If you look closely where Carol and Alice are on the water log ride, Peter is sitting between them. Yet, he was with Mike and Greg in the arcade.....

Another blooper that people familiar with the park might notice (or even people who are very observant), near the end of the episode when the canister with the blueprints is being passed between the characters as they all run through the park to get them to Mike, you'll notice a character running through the exact same spot that another character has already run through.

The infamous "Brady Bunch" episode can now be found on DVD!! Just look for season "Five" (The Last Season) of the show... It's really great to see how the park looked back then... A LOT of that stuff is gone now!!
Wouldn't it be cool to have the "Brady's" come back to King's Island for a NEW Brady special!!??

I was at King's Island when they taped. I saw the rehearsal when
'Alice' was running across the grass near the Eifel Tower. I even stood next to Mike Lookinland and Chris Knight at that swiss chalet ride thing.
One of my Mother's friends shook hands with Robert Reed who was also in line.

Cindy, Bobby and Greg were so nice when I met them at the Brady Bunch reunion. Greg said I looked like Cindy (when she was 6 years old). The Brady Bunch is my favorite TV show. We TiVo it every time it is on. We have recorded 61 episodes so far, including The Cincinnati Kids of course.

I've been going to Kings Island since 1975. To me there is no other park like Kings Island!! I really miss the "Antique Cars" as well as the "Flying Eagles" These are classic rides and should be put back in the park. I now take my son Zachary to Kings Island and have since 2000 when he was 2 years old. He loves Kings Island just like I do, and he misses the "Antique Cars" & "Flying Eagles" as much as I do. Please Kings Island, put these rides back in!!!

I went to Kings Island for the first time in 2008, i loved it. i thought they had the best roller coasters in the world! the first place i rode a real roller coaster was at Kings Island. i thought the best one was Son of Beast. it was so extreme and fast... i just loved it. i am going again and when i get back i am going to ride the looping roller coasters, and the first one will be Vortex. can't wait!!!!

Anyone that wants to see the Kings Island Carousel go to
... ... nca-usa ... /psp/index.html, great photos of all the horses.
I LOVED the Brady Bunch and Partridge Family KI episodes. You can see both on You Tube (in bits). Seeing the episodes as a kid I always wanted to go there. In Mass where I live there were no theme parks like that in the 1970s. Great episodes, can't help but smile when I watch them!

This used to be a great park. Don't understand why they got rid of all the old classic rides. Its great that they made it into this roller coaster haven, but some still prefer the old classics. I went there last year for the first time in probably 20 years and it don't even seem like the same park. Too bad for today's kids!

My husband and I went to the 2008 reunion the day the Bradys were there. We decided to skip the few hours that they were signing autographs even though I wanted to go. Anyway, the past employees, at the end of the night after the fireworks, got to have the last ride of the night on The Beast. We were at the end of the line and rode what we thought was the last ride. Then they said we could ride again cause they still had room for the real last ride. So guess who we got to ride with?? The Bradys!! It was Greg, Bobby, and Cindy...lol. So that was better than getting an autograph anyday!

I have always loved the Brady Bunch. I only wish they would have worn shorts, as most people wear shorts at Theme parks. I went there in 1974 and wish I would have worn shorts.

I'm also a huge fan but I live closer to another famous park called Hershey park in PA, but they also took away a lot of the classic rides. There is another park in PA called kanobles grove who still have the classic rides, with no admission price to enter the park!
