  1. I wanted to share with you my live interview I had with Don back to Indianapolis on opening day. I did not put a lot of effort into the video and my titles in Pinnacle were not working correctly, but we do talk about 2013 items and the construction in AZ! Enjoy!

  2. Hello. This year the wife (Laura) and I decided not to get season passes so that we could focus our budget on going to some other parks like Cedar Point and Holiday World. At first our plan was to wait until they start selling 2014 passes then use the complimentary 2013 ticket to go to the park once, but when I saw the deal for the Color Me Pink 5K I couldn't resist ($29.99 to run through the park before it opens AND get a ticket. Can't beat it!) I joined up with the KICentral Ta Ta team so that I could meet a couple people from the site for the first time. I was a little apprehensive about meeting people who I've only communicated with through a forum. I mean, sure, we share a love for Kings Island, but what if I come across as a total tool and my reputation as an awesome fantasy footballer on here is ruined?! But I've been on this site for like...ever! Since 2002 (and whatever it was called before that), so it was about time for me to meet someone. Needless to say, I was a little nervous when I arrived. And cold. Man, it was cold. Well, we got parked at 6:40ish, turned in our tickets and got stamped. I looked around at the crowd of people all wearing white and saw no sign of anything KICentral related. So then I thought, well, maybe I should have tried to coordinate with someone earlier. While waiting near the front of the crowd I saw who I thought may be Jcgobel3 (Jonathan). I only knew what he looked like based on previous trip reports and he looked like he was searching for....something. Or....someone. So I approached him and said, "Hey! Are you from KICentral?" He said "yeah", and so then I spit in his face and stepped on his foot. No, I introduced myself and my wife. I was relieved that I'd finally met someone from KIC. I thought, this isn't so bad, Jonathan seems like a good guy. Then he texted Avatar (Jesse) and we were told that they were back near the stage. Again, nervous, I followed Jonathan and then I saw Jesse (recognized from trip reports) with a group of others. I introduced myself to Jesse and met a couple other people. I'm sorry if I don't remember everyone's names, but there was Jason and 2 fellows who said they were fans but didn't post and 2 ladies who I didn't really get introduced to. Then Ryan showed up. We all moved to the staging section and we were going to be part of the last group to go. I guess I should get with some pictures now. I'm sorry if some of these are not great. To keep from permanently dying my phone, I had it in a zip lock bag for the run. This is us prior to the run: This is actually stolen from Jesse's Facebook post (sorry), but it's the KICentral Ta Ta team prior to action (What are the chances we all picked the same shirt to wear?): We got lined up and we were off. Laura and I decided early that we were running this thing for pride, for country, and to burn some calories so that we could have some blue ice cream later. When we hit the first mile marker, I was a little skeptical that this was actually a full 5K. It seemed to come up pretty early, but it doesn't matter, we were running inside Kings Island! Running under Invertigo: The path took us around Invertigo and into Action Zone (this is where we were first hit with color). Then we went down the Coney Mall strip to WindSeeker then back through Coney Mall and around Tower Gardens (I think, it was all kind of a blur). I do know that near the end of the Coney Mall section we saw Jesse and Jonathan running into Coney Mall and I yelled at them and they waved as they were trying to catch us (yeah right, we were like the wind....slow, sweaty wind). We went over near The Beast and went down a service road under Diamondback, which was pretty sweet. There was a very steep downhill and then uphill under Diamondback. Here's a shot of me under DB: It would have been cooler if DB was running at the time. Heck, we were running, why wasn't lazy old Diamondback running!? Then we took some more back roads and before we knew it we were in Soak City and at the finish line where we were given our own bag of color to throw at each other. Laura got me pretty good. In the end, here is what we looked like: I'd say we made it out relatively clean compared to these nuts: Look at that. Kids rolling around. It's like pandemonium. Mixed in the picture above is Don Helbig (Red shirt, tie and khakis). I met him shortly after and shook his hand. Told him I appreciated his posts on KIC. I asked how hard it would be to clean all this up and he said it was pretty easy with a power washer. We met up with the KICentral crew when they were done and some of them were a mess. Good job guys! Eventually we got out to the car and got cleaned up and changed so that we could start our day in the park. (Continued later)

  5. Actually, some on here know alot more than others,im even somewhat sure some know whats going to be built. They wont say a word while the rest of us have fun guessing.Dont take anything personal on here,I think most of us are just sick of hearing about SOB and you would understand it more if you have read this forum the last few years! Its going to be much fun watching and waiting to see whats in store! I know Im going to be peaking through the fence every chance I get! Doing this site for nearly 10 years, one thing I've learned is that most people think they know a lot more than they really do. Granted, some employees may catch wind of something that's going to happen in the near future, but I'm sure that no seasonal associate knows 100% what's in the works. In fact, I'm sure no one knows since plans change A LOT. What you do see a lot of is people claiming to have known about a project for quite some time after it is announced. There are also a lot of "told ya so"people in which they guess constantly and when something happens to be correct, they claim to have been the first to know on the forums.

  7. well I’m back, sort of. this is my first post in 90 or so days... and I’m pretty far out of habit posting on here. For my own productivity, it should probably remain so. Here is my “trip report” covering my last 90+ days. At the end of January I took a job with a State of Ohio Tourism industry partner. Basically I covered small counties in the northwestern part of the state touting their tourist sites. It was fun, worked with some great people! No i didn’t get to work with the favored southwestern Ohio locations (you need seniority to pull that rank). I did come across details only because I was nosy. I don’t know how public they are, but they’re not going to be told by me. About 2+ weeks ago I started having some back trouble, which isn’t unusual. I do dumb things to make sure that I get the occassional back pain- but usually “play through it.” About 2 weeks ago I found out that this was no “usual” stop. I was in the hospital for almost a week addressing the problem and found out that due to the treatments, I woulnd’t be able to drive for several weeks. Now, when you are paid by contract (not salary) and working neccessitates you to drive, that’s problematic. Upon starting rehab I needed to resign- fortunately a local CEO that I had kept communications with over the years came calling at the right time and I was able to transition without missing a beat- a job I could, at least, partially, work from home- since I am still on driving restriction. This is not a woe-is-me cry- as thank God- I will be landing on my feet. Financially we won’t feel much of a pinch from this and for the most part my back will heal in time. When October rolls around, my roller coaster tally for the summer will stand at 0. this summer when you ride a coaster (KI or elsewhere)- and you think “wow, that was bumpy”- pay attention to your body. You only get one body. My advice to you. Medically speaking I was told most amusement rides are off of my list this summer... maybe for life. Roller coasters didn’t cause this; i will say they were probably a spoke in the wheel, but i take responsibility for my own actions. Pay attention to yourself. You may be in your teens (or twenties) and these things don’t bother you- but some day you are going to be in your late 30s-early 40s wondering what decisions you could have made differently. Anyway, I’m back- though since i am 90-days removed from the “habit”- I will likely stay as such. Don’t bother asking what things are coming here, there, or anywhere- I don’t know much, and what I do I can still be sued for.

  11. (Continued....) After getting cleaned up we went back to the Soak City entrance and since the train wasn't there yet we walked down the connector path and found that the entrance to Planet Snoopy was still blocked from ERT opening. There was a small crowd gathered and I saw the KIC'ers again so we joined back up with them. When the rope dropped we made our way to Diamondback. Laura and I were concerned about riding behind Ryan or Jesse because they were caked in the magic 5K powder and we figured we'd be wearing that stuff on our nice clean clothes after the first hill. They went to the back of the train and we were a couple rows ahead, but then some kids were looking for some awesome couple, like super heroes, to swoop in and ride before them so that they could ride with their friends. We were that couple, so we swooped in. There were still some people in the front of the train with the magic dust on them (including Jason), so when we went down the first hill there was a small red cloud that we passed through. Diamondback was amazing though and while I felt that mysterious vibration that has been creeping in, it wasn't as bad or distracting as it's been in the past. Afterwards we waited at the exit to watch the other KIC'ers go down the hill to see if we could spot the instance when Ryan and Jesse crop dusted everyone, but we didn't see the cloud. But we did see the results from the girls that sat behind them after they returned, which was pretty funny. At that point we separated from the group. They were going off to clean up and we were heading to The Beast. I have to say; I'm glad we met up. Jonathan, Jesse, Ryan and Jason were all cool and fun to talk to. Wish we could have hung out a little more because we didn't get much time to get to know each other, but maybe we'll be able to meet up again sometime in the future. Unfortunately, I didn't check the meet up post to see where and when everyone else was meeting later, so I didn't get to experience that, but maybe it can happen next year. So moving on, we went to The Beast and the line was out of the entrance. Um...it was still ERT, right? Well, since it was only like 5 minutes until the rest of the park opened, we waited by LaRosa's and when the rope dropped we went to Back Lot Stunt Coaster. Look who we saw in line: It's old Marty McFly!!! When their train took off I half expected to see flaming tire tracks left behind! Too bad BLSC doesn't hit 88 MPH. We then headed for either FoF or Thunderhawk and both had crazy long lines already, so we went to The Racer. Line wasn't too long, but they were only running one side, so it took about 15 minutes. It was very smooth, which was nice. Off season work well done! When we got out over half of The Racer's queue was full. Checked Adventure Express and it was out the entrance, so we walked around and checked out some shops for a while. Me trying on what may be my future hat of choice: HOF Grill Experience...may be long, skip if not interested... Then we headed to the Reds HOF Grill. It was early, but since we hardly ate anything before running, we were hungry. We walked in and were seated quickly since we were one of the early guests in. The food looked good and the prices looked decent on some things but not for others ($9.99 for a chili dog and chips?). I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and Laura ordered chicken tenders (she ordered the fry upgrade). Then we waited. And waited. And walked around and checked the decor. Then came back and waited. And waited. Our waitress was great, checking in on us. The first people to be served (I heard their waiter tell them that they were the first) got their food eventually and it looked good, but we kept waiting. I overheard the first family make a complaint about not getting fries so they were waiting on that. Eventually we got our food and they did not get Laura's fries, so the waitress said she'd get it ordered. The sandwich was okay. Not a ton of flavor, but the chips were good. Laura's tenders left a lot to be desired. It was 4 scrawny tenders on what looked like 2 big orders of chips. Perhaps the chips were supposed to make up for the lack of tenders, I don't know. Those also did not have a lot of flavor, so maybe the chicken dishes aren't the way to go there. We finished our meals and the place had filled up. The first family was done, but there was a problem with their check which the manager came out to correct. The couple next to us were brought the wrong food and the same thing happened to the people next to them later. Our waitress told us Laura's fries were going to be a little while because they were backed up, but we told her she could just skip that since we'd filled on chips, so we were ready for our check. When we got the check she had still charged us for the fries, so we asked to have that corrected, which she did. After we paid we got up (we left a nice tip for her doing as well as she could), we looked the place over a little more. It seemed pretty hectic. The place was full, but did not feel crowded with people. As I walked to the restroom which was by an entrance to the kitchen, I noticed that their soda dispenser in the kitchen is right next to the door so servers refilling drinks have to dodge people going in and out. It seemed like a really bad idea to have it there (it should probably be outside of the kitchen since it looked quite cramped as it was in there). I don't want to dog on it too much because it was the first day, so they have plenty of time to iron out the kinks. The place itself was beautiful. Plenty of things to look at and memorabilia everywhere. With the sit down service it didn't even feel like we were in Kings Island anymore. Perhaps we'll check it out again the next time we're in the park and by then they should have everything going smoothly. End of HOF Grill Experience..... After that we checked back on The Beast. The line was even longer, so we decided to try Dinosaurs Alive for the first time ever. I have to say, I enjoyed it. The Dinos did not always work when we walked up and we'd have to wait on them for a while to move, but they almost all seemed to work. The new giant one was quite impressive. Here's Laura and I in front of what is now one of the smaller guys: After Jurassic Park we checked out Action Zone and some blue ice cream. That's when I noticed the (now infamous) wall. I pondered the signs and risked injury and or death and stuck my hand through a gate opening to snap a couple pictures: To get a better look, we went to the Eiffel Tower which had a 25 minute line. We waited and went up. It's always nice up there. Since I only had the iPhone I didn't take any pictures since they wouldn't be worth much from that high. The Beast line looked long, but we decided to check it out again. We were tired so we knew that we were either going to ride this and leave or a couple flats. The line was past the arcade at that point, so we were off to Shake Rattle and Roll (a favorite flat of mine). We had to wait about 6 cycles to ride that, but it was fun. Then we hit Dodgem. There was red dust on a lot of the straps.....Jesse? Ryan? Then finally we hit the Grand Carousel. For the first time in, I don't know how long, we had to wait 2 cycles to ride (yeah it was that crowded). One thing I noticed outside of the Carousel and I'm sure someone can enlighten me, but has this always been here? (The old timey saw in the tree): If it has, I've just never noticed it. If it's new (it's a clue!!!!) Okay, that's it. After that ride we left. Sorry for the lack of pictures of the park. I took a lot of the dinos, but those aren't too exciting. I think I had some of the food, but I don't have them with me at the moment (they're on my wife's phone) but I can add them later. It was a good day. The 5K through the park is a great experience and I advise everyone to do it if they have it again next year. Meeting KIC'ers was also a great experience as well. This will probably be it for me from Kings Island until later in the year when a 2014 pass deal comes around (and we may have a new attraction announced!!!) Thanks for reading!

  12. Long time lurker....first time poster.... I haven't been to Kings Island in 13 years, yet it holds a very near and dear space in my heart. I drive by it all the time while on the way to my in-laws (I live in Indiana and they live outside Canton). My wife makes fun of me b/c my head perks up like a dog when we drive by. Hahahaha I've even taken the exit and just drove by. I have a 3 and 5 year old and can't wait to take them for their first trips to K.I.

  13. My mom always told me - "You know everything and that's it" (of course she was being sarcastic and using the phrase as a Polish put-down) but......here goes..... I think these new terrain-hugging coasters like Maverick and Cheetah Run are very front and center right now. The area in question could handle a coaster like that, along with the theming that goes with it. Verbolten is a cool concept, but i think it could get "old" after a bit - I mean, really, unless the show gets changed, how many times do you want to see it? Expedition Everest is another example - the show will need to be changed to give guests a fresh experience once in a while. With Maverick and Cheetah Run, things can be added to enhance the theming, keeping the ride experience freshened-up at minimal cost. Also, if the area in question is going to be a themed area, room will be needed for additional rides, attractions, etc., so keeping the new coasters' footprint a bit more compact may be what we finally see. I don't believe B&M has built any Maverick-like rides, but there's always a first - and they would probably do it much, much better than Intamin could ever hope to achieve. Finally, bone-chilling screams.....I think it's just hype to corral more guests into a return visit after "whatever it is" is built. Hey, at least it didn't say "bone crushing screams" - we already had that with the last attraction that graced that area! Well, mom - any comments from you?

  14. Tired of them? Aren't there only 4 in the world? 2 in the US (Dollywood and Six Flags IL) and both of those opened last year? You're are tired already after 1 season and both are over 4 hours away from cincy? I don't think KI will put in a winged coaster because 1. Cedar Point just got one and 2. it's a relatively new thing. It's still untested. KI can't gamble after removing a $20 mil (in 1999) coaster. Gambling is not an option. KI has to put in something they know will be solid, and they know they will get return on. This one has to make its own way and pick up some SOB slack. I think if they build a new coaster, it needs to boast something to grab people's attention. I don't think a winged coaster the year after CP opened theirs will grab much attention and won't draw people from in between the two parks.

  17. I'm pretty confident that this is the scene from the ride that these pieces are from. Gargamel was in at least two other scenes, but his hands were open in one and he was represented as a scarecrow (sans hands) in the other. As you can also see, the picture is courtesy of "B. Lamm". I cannot find the site or original source I pulled it from though, but it's apparently from 1985 (Smurf's Enchanted Voyage opened in 1984, last operated in 1991).

  18. I for one want the park to know that I'm leaving to have a parking lot picnic, or to visit a restaurant down the street. No more FunPerks, and if the service we got at Bier Garten (and the service friends got at Reds Hall of Fame Grille) on Saturday is any indication of the way they will be running things in Food Service this year, I'll be taking spending my money elsewhere, be it Kroger to pack a lunch or Taco Bell, Chipotle, Burger King or one of the other nearby establishments. (Yes, I realize it was opening day and am willing to give KI Food Service another chance... one more.) Maybe then they'll actively work again to keep my money in the park. People gotta eat, but not necessarily in the park.

  25. In reply to the OP: 1. Adventure Express 1. Beast (It's running really well this year!) 3. Flight Deck 4. Flight of Fear 5. Racer 6. Backlot Stunt Coaster 7. Vortex 8. Diamondback 9. Firehawk 10. Woodstock Express 11. Invertigo 12. Flying Ace Aerial Chase 13. Great Pumpkin Coaster In reply to The Beast conversation: I used to ride Beast expecting thrills, but I now approach it with the attitude of watching a 70's action movie. Jdawg is right--there are no real G's, save for the laterals just after the first drop and a few turns leading to the second lift. But that's entirely the thing with Beast. It's a strong start, then a bunch of straightaways and wide turns. The turns gradually increase in intensity, speed, and forces--and then they drop off the map entirely when you hit the second lift. It's about lulling you into a sense of security, then shattering it with the most intense portion of the ride. It's not the typical B&M progression of most to least intense elements during the ride, and that's a good thing--in my opinion, anyway. Beast is one of the few rides in the world that manages to theme itself without relying on props or a gimmick, and I think that's why it's as famous as it is.

  29. My first inclination when I saw the construction site photos was I really hope that Kings Island gets something that's high capacity. Getting another high capacity coaster to help ease the crowds on the X-Base coasters and Diamondback would be amazing. The last few major Cedar Fair coaster installs (since 2008) have clearly demonstrated that capacity is a big deal... Behemoth - well over 1,000 people per hour (pph) Diamondback - well over 1,000 pph Prowler - averages around 800 pph but it's at a smaller park Intimidator 305 - around 1,000 pph Intimidator at Carowinds - well over 1,000 pph Leviathan - well over 1,000 pph Gatekeeper - will average well over 1,000 pph I'm so thankful that Cedar Fair gets how important capacity is, unlike Six Flags who has completely jumped the shark in this regard. The fact that Cedar Fair continues to pour money into not only new high-quality rides but also the aesthetic side of the parks makes me realize that Cedar Fair is heading in the right direction. I can't remember the last time Cedar Fair announcing a major install that made me shake my head and or second-guess the decision. I hope that this ride - whatever it turns out to be - will continue the string.

  30. Disco yeti wasn't a big enough change for you? I am just excited to see something - anything - coming. I have been pleased with the small upgrades the park has been receiving for the last several years. But it's time Kings Island got something a little "sexier". I like coasters as much as the next guy (actually, that's probably not true here), but I don't have my heart set on a coaster. I would love a dark ride. The more family-friendly, the better. Having said that, a coaster would be great too. Whatever they build, I would like to see a good strong theme. A "scary" theme doesn't excite me as much as some others might. The one dark ride we have is already too scary for a lot of kids. With two little girls, I'd love to see something that appeals to them more. But that's just me. Whatever theme the new attraction has, I hope they do it up to the extent such a thing is possible at a seasonal amusement park. My guess? At this point I have no guess. Fairly confident KI will never again invoke SoB, but beyond that I have no idea. The wait to find out is killing me - but in a good way. I'll have fun watching and waiting for new info and all of your theories - except those related to SoB No matter what gets built, I doubt I will be disappointed. It will either be something I enjoy with my kids next year or several years from now.

  32. "I wasn't going to go into this explanation, but I feel as though I should elaborate. I'm not saying that you are making an outlandish statement at all, nor even an unreasonable statement. You are, though, likely making a slightly unrealistic statement. The only real reason that Fast Lane was added was to make the park money - sorry, but that's the ultimate incentive behind everything a park does. What you have to think about is what it would gain the park to do something. The trial run of Fast Lane started in 2011 and included ten rides. Some of them were family rides, and some were the park's star attractions. They had to make it valuable enough to make people want to spend the 50 bucks. Most of the rides they picked already had existing structures in place to serve as the Fast Lane queue. Diamondback had a former single rider line, Beast had its former emergency exit (part of it was the original exit to the ride way back in the day even), and many other rides had similar situations to make it fairly easy to organize a trial Fast Lane. Obviously the park was satisfied with the trial run, because they did a similar trial that October during Haunt and have continued to use Fast Lane ever since, and have expanded it to other parks. Once satisfied, the park added as many other attractions as they could to Fast Lane to get as many people to buy as possible. Most were fairly simple processes. They re-did Adventure Express' queue slightly, poured a small concrete walkway for Racer, etc. At this point, we have most of the rides covered by Fast Lane. Now...let's look at Flight Deck. It has a very elaborate queue line as it is. In order to merit the cost of re-designing it slightly - I can't come up with a good way without adding at least one bridge - an expensive process - they would have to have a really good reason to add it. In the first place, the line doesn't usually extend to the level to merit a Fast Lane. In the second place, I doubt there would be very many people that would intentionally buy a Fast Lane that wouldn't already have bought one, just because Flight Deck was included. There just isn't enough of a reason for it to merit doing so at this time. Now...get a 2014 ride in there increasing activity into that area of the park, thereby increasing the line length, and that might be a different story." I hear what you are saying about how the way station was built it would be kind of costly, and there likely isn't enough r.o.i. from it. After consideration, I'll have Cedar Fair know that I will settle for a heavily-themed Indiana Jones bridge connecting to the station to be used for Fast Lane. I'm thinking something like this:

  34. Hello all first time poster but this seemed like the perfect time to signup...and I frequent KI and CP several times a year. I personally do not see any possibility of a SOB remake (and despite my name I actually liked the ride). At most as far as wood goes I could see a GCI like people have mentioned. I am leaning more towards a B&M like so many people have stated but I would love a heavily themed ride in there. Ever since Paramount lost ownership theming has taking a plummet. I see that they are trying to make a come back in this area a bit so a thrilling dark ride or something along those lines would go a looooong way in my opinion.

  35. It can. Remember Scooby Doo and the Haunted Castle? It was haunted. Fortunately you were able to use your blasters to thward the ghosts. They're not blasters - they're "Fright Light Flashlights." Do you even go here? And they work so well most can't hit the broad side of a barn, much less a ghost.

Sped up to Cedar Point and got there around 1:30PM Park was packed so we rode Dragster and Raptor and that's when we got the idea to try to make it to MIA before they closed. We left CP at 3PM and made it to MIA by 8pm we rode all but two coasters in an hour. We do crazy trips like this all the time.

  37. With both being sister parks, we are always going to find the good and bad of both parks. When it comes to rides I have many favorites at Kings Dominion that I do wish Kings Island had. For instance, an inverted swinging ship, a launch coaster like Volcano, a giga coaster, the old style stand up (Shockwave), they have a great Wild Mouse coaster, still have the antique cars, still have the flying eagles, and their log flume feels like a rustic woods flume not themed to cartoons. I have to admit when it comes to placing rides I think Kings Dominion in the latter years has no concept on where to put rides, "Oh we get Dominator, lets just throw it in the parking lot", what does bobsledding and the congo have in common when it comes to Avalanche. Then on top of that lets throw Flight of Fear, 305, and Backlot into the Congo also. When Waterworks was built it was very small compared to its layout now, was very condensed but when they needed to add more it got spread out so far that it is a workout just going to different attractions. Now I do love Kings Dominion even though Kings Island is my home park but when it comes to food I think Kings Island has to have that hands down, and friendlier staff. Rides I have to give to the Dominion, and a cleaner and better landscaped park. My biggest issue will always be Kings Dominion still has a campground next door which is why I spend more time there, I am so sick of having to shuttle family back and forth to Kings Island from 6 miles away, when we can all use bikes at Kings Dominion..

  38. I think it would be a mistake to do this to the fountains. I would really enjoy that staying the same, as has most of Int'l Street. Its an iconic walk that shouldn't be changed imho.

  40. I wasn't going to go into this explanation, but I feel as though I should elaborate. Now...get a 2014 ride in there increasing activity into that area of the park, thereby increasing the line length, and that might be a different story.

  41. A bumblebee. Flying around on an inverted B&M themed to a bee, named Stinger.

  42. A FastLane path to Flight Deck would require moving sidewalks or a monorail, otherwise it would have to be called SlowLane.

  43. I would say that's probably a no, but I may be wrong. I think you may be looking into it a little bit too much. Well in that case, I would very much like for them to add a path for Fast Lane use. Most of the time Flight Deck is nearly a walk-on if not a walk-on anyway. Why would they add an extra queue?

  44. Oh my, it is definitely not looking like this and I would be absolutely shocked if it happened but what if an updated, scarier phantom theater was put in! In my childhood that was my favorite ride by far. They could even put in thrill aspects like a less extravagant The Mummy....that will be the day. I agree though I am thinking B&M so far and that's just fine they do quality work.
