  4. Here are a few pictures posted from Geauga Lake on Facebook (not affiliated with the actual Geauga Lake) Drone Footage from above...the station is still standing. I believe the Lift Hill was to the left of the picture. From Tim Williams on a Facebook Group called geauga lake's funtimes https://www.facebook.com/groups/328339562737/?ref=br_tf&qsefr=1

  6. ^no guarantees coaster club members will be invited, tho. Considering how negative some "enthusiasts" tend to loudly be about the special things parks do for us, I couldn't blame the park if they keep it actual media only. Of course I hope otherwise.

  7. I'm very tempted to go to opening day now, this coaster looks absolutely awesome! I love GCI's, and I can't imagine how smooth and crazy a brand new one will be.

  9. @KIBeast.... I agree with you, and while Ouimet hasnt done what I was honestly expecting/hoping he was going to do (more Disney influences and employee training/guest relations improvement), words cannot describe how much more I like him than DK. Of course, they could have made a sweep the new CEO, and I would like him/her more than DK. On another note, those photos... while incredibly sad to me.... at least provide a finality and closure to the entire sad saga.

  11. Interesting weekend. Diamondback when down Friday just as we got to the station, my son got his 300th Diamondback ride in Friday, witnessed my first Diamondyak firsthand (protein spill, thankfully it was A) after the ride was done while we were coming into the station and it was behind us), saw The Beast ques full and out to the arcade (80s flashback there), saw multiple idiots with cell phones out on rides, and Diamondback get taken down for a couple of cycles due to a child getting their knee stuck in the exit gate from the outside. No damage was done, but I did find it odd that when got back to the station after our ride, there were kids outside hanging on the exit gate. Crowds were pretty big, so the park should close the year well. You can tell it is near the end of the season, as lots of food items seem to be getting scarce / hard to find.

  12. Had an absolutely incredible time at SeaWorld today. Overall, an amazing park with great shows, a great atmosphere, and amazing rides. I loved this park way more than I thought I would and completely entertained the entire day. Lemme just give a quick grade to each ride. Manta: A Times Ridden: 4 Easily best flying coaster I've been on, tons of fun. Pretzel loop is super forceful and crazy in the back row, rest of the ride is tons of fun with the second half of the ride my favorite part. Coasting over the water with the fountains going off is awesome and flying so close through the rock work beats any near miss on a wing coaster. Journey To Atlantis: B/B- Very fun water coaster, my first by Mack Rides. Was missing the hologram in the opening scene and a few other effects were down. Drop was fun and the final coaster section was surprisingly good. Kraken: B Times Ridden: 2 Easily my favorite floorless (only have ridden Rougarou). "Rattly", but to be honest, I don’t really care. Had zero head-banging, and the entire ride is tons of fun. Drop was underwhelming but the rest of the ride made up for it. Zero-G roll was great. Especially love the second half when it dives into the trenches and tunnels and that final corkscrew was awesome. Mako: A+ Times Ridden: 7 What? This thing blew away my expectations, easily destroys my now second favorite B&M Hyper, Diamondback. It's extremely well paced and has very strong floater, even on the hill that has the trim. Second half is great with the overbanks, although it is a little slow. Best seat was definitely front, followed closely by the back for the insane airtime on the drop. The other seats are good but I would not rate it as high as I currently am if I only rode middle seats. Bottom line, probably top 5 coaster. Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin: C- Times Ridden: 1 I was very disappointed in this ride. I didn't know exactly what to think except for a trackless dark ride with some real penguins in it. Was the longest wait of the day around 40 minutes when Mako was a walk-on and honestly I regret it. The trackless functionality is completely wasted and even the "wild" setting was extremely tame. It felt like I was in a warehouse with fake ice, and I know that is technically the case, I shouldn't feel like that. HPATFJ and Spiderman are some of my favorite rides of all time and honestly I would take them over many coasters, why couldn't this be like that? I got off this thinking, "Wait, that's it? That's the best they could do with this incredible technology?" Overall amazing park where all my expectations minus Antarctica were blown away. Totally worth the visit, especially if you pair it with BGT. Manta and Mako jumped into my top 10 coasters currently, but I will have to see if that remains true after my trip to Busch Gardens on Tuesday.

  14. Personally, I'm enjoying the post Kinzel era. Still installing great coasters, but also there is a better focus on family installations as well.

  15. Mystic Timbers is looking insane so far! especially with the amount of progress this thing has seen already! Opening day hype! (I really don't want this season to end)

  18. They are probably just parking it there while it is not needed, once they build some more bents they will probably move it forward and install them. The they will move the crane past where the bents are being assembled, then turn and continue building the lift hill, and the cross over, then that part of the coaster will be complete, and the crane will be on the "outside".
    3 points
  19. They've now moved the crane back to the lift/first drop area. I know there's probably a good reason for moving the crane about like they area, but it seems weird the way they're progressing to me. Probably one of many reasons why I'm not going in to engineering.

  21. Same ^ Edit; i was soo pumped for Banshee. I've been wanting a B&M Invert at Kings Island since I was maybe 10 years old. But the allure that i get from a new GCI is a bit greater

  22. That's great! My first visit to Cedar Point was just me and my father as well. He hadn't been since Magnum opened so lots of nostalgia for him while tons being new.

  23. This sold me on purchasing both a Platinum Pass as well as a Six Flags Gold Pass come Christmas time. Having two new, albeit smaller coasters in the midwest is great and Mystic Timbers looks to be an amazing ride. Now if only RMC Mean Streak is opening next year... (I-Box Track on site, maybe...)

  24. Mean Streak had a fair amount of retracking, several years actually. They also had some going on before the ride opened to the public/after the season started. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  25. I stumbled upon a page on Facebook that features Westland Mall in Columbus. https://www.facebook.com/westland.mall.5/ Searching through pictures, I came across the following, featuring Kings Island In Motion Show......anyone have more info on it? *Note the ride models below the stage. *I do not know who owns these pictures*
    2 points
  26. Well, also realize that Mean Streak and Hurler are hardly the best examples of wooden coasters out there. They were in need of improvements of some kind IMO.

  27. B&M's have gentler hills than John Millers, not to mention far more effective restraint systems.

  28. The parabolic negative airtime hills would not be recreated in the USA in today's climate. A rebuilt Big Dipper would resemble the original as much as Kings Dominion's Grizzly does Coney Island of Ohio's Wildcat or Canada's Wonderland's Mighty Canadian Minebuster does Coney Island of Ohio's Shooting Star--which is to say almost not at all. Geauga Lake itself had the prime exemplar. The Raging Wolf Bobs was made of wood and had coaster trains that ran on steel wheels on wood track. Otherwise....the Riverview Bobs recreated? No. Just no.

  29. And, as has been said numerous times here by individual(s) quite knowledgeable in the facts of ride relocation/recreation, it CAN not and WILL not be the same ride, no matter where it would be installed in the US. If that ride were built in any US park today, in compliance with current safety regulations, it would be as much the Big Dipper as Banshee is. The things that made that ride good, buzz bars being one of them, would not exist on any recreation. Had DK not been a jerk (My opinion, no one will ever change it so dont try), that ride could/would have been relocated in its existing form someplace like Valleyfair as Terp mentioned, or WoF where I wanted it. As much as I Love the history of the ride, and wish the non-Dick move would have been made back when it could have, the unfortunate reality is that its better off being dismantled at this point.

  32. For those of you who don't know, the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World has 4 live steam locomotives that were all built by the Baldwin Locomotives works based out of Pennsylvania. When planning the Magic Kingdom Imangineer Roger Broggie discovered 5 narrow gauge steam locomotives down in Mexico ready to be scrapped. The company bought all five and took them to Tampa for restoration, (it should be noted that one of the locomotives was beyond repair and was thus not restored.) That being said, the other 4 locomotives were finished in time for the grand opening of the Magic Kingdom in 1971. I have seen endless videos and read tons of articles saying that Roger Broggie and fellow imagineers searched the whole continent for steam locomotives and were unsuccessful, for the most part, in doing so. Now after 45 years I thought of something I've never thought of before- why didn't Disney hire Crown Metal Products locomotive company to design their railroad? Though larger in length and size, the WDWRR's steam locomotives run on a narrow gauge line just like Kings Island. All I know for sure is that Roger Broggie wanted to have the locomotives designed to his specification so he hired a steam ship manager, go figure! He said, "If I hire a railroad worker they'll make them how they want to make them, I want them made my way." But still, I feel like Crown would have been very flexible in working with Disney Imagineers. My only solid theory is that Disney wanted to find original steam locomotives that were already existing. What do you think? Though I'm a coaster critic, I also know a great deal about steam locomotives as well.

  33. I can not express to you how underrated that I think Sea World is as a park. I'm in a little disagreement about your rating of Journey to Atlantis, as I think it really is a hidden gem in their lineup. Also, did you have the opportunity to see One Ocean or Blue Horizons? Truly remarkable experiences! Keep us posted!

  34. Oh that looks like Muttley from the old Wacky Races cartoon in the first photo on stage. Pretty cool find.

  35. Is it possible the In Motion show was some presentation of what's to come to KI when it opened in the early 70s? Maybe the ride models are talking about them going to move to Kings Island?

  36. Super long line, and it felt kind of sparse as far as actors. Because everyone wants to do it, they let people through in a pretty constant stream, so it's hard for scareactors to reset (and presumably, keep enthusiasm). The guy behind me kept stepping on the backs of my shoes. The layout is pretty good, and I found it hard to know where I was in relation to the entrance. I think I would have enjoyed it much more if there was more of a feeling of exploring rather than the conga line I was in. There are a couple spots where people can go multiple paths, which makes it a little more interesting. It feels vast, which is probably another reason it felt like there were too few scareactors. One of the most spooky parts, to me, was once you actually come out of the maze, you walk around the outside of two sides of it, with unrecognizable fields and trees (and some farm equipment) bordering the path opposite the maze. It feels nothing like being in a theme park. I wasn't sure if there was going to be anything out there beyond the lights.

  37. The only way I could see the Big Dipper get rebuilt with the current layout would be to use Iron Horse Track. That would make it a steal coaster with steal coaster trains. I am just taking a guess I don't know all the rules on building coasters.

  38. Good to know that that stench is actually very necessary (because we don't want our beloved mazes to go up in flames!); I remember smelling it in Killmart (and a bit in Urgent Scare) when the KIC group went through 2 Fridays ago! Also, hoping to try Field of Screams and Blackout this Friday, along with another trip through the Bayou. Also, Magenta Lizard, how was Field of Screams?

  43. My question is why did Hurler have to be closed for the entire season? Meanstreak is a much bigger coaster and yet remained operation till late in the regular season.. Cedar Fair has really thrown a wrench into the norm we are used to seeing.
    1 point
  44. Yet Kings Dominion fans will still complain. "Well it's about time!"
    1 point
  45. Now, yes. When Cedar Fair closed the park, no. And for reasons previously alluded to, rebuilding it exactly somewhere else is almost certainly not an option. John Miller woodies aren't design compliant with modern day standards for newly built rides.

  46. Not only that, the cycle was changed TWICE. For a brief moment it had a "true" top spin cycle akin to what you might see while playing Roller Coaster Tycoon. It was actually a lot of fun and intense. No one cared that you were in an empty box with nothing but flashing lights. I remember the day we reopened with the final cycle (the ferris wheel type one). We had everyone in the queue so pumped up, shouting to them on the microphone. That first load of guests got on and as the ride started homing back to position at the end, nothing and I mean nothing, but boo's. So many agitated people as they exited. When I first started working at the park, the Tomb Raider crew was always one of the last few to get up to the office at the end of the day due to a long line. By the time it was The Crypt, we usually had the ride spick and span, trash changed, and everything done by 9 PM. Never had much, if anyone, after 8:30 PM. Got to the bar a lot earlier most nights that summer.

  48. Because the train can get pretty crowded transporting people back and forth from Soak City, I would love to see the return of a Sky Ride to take some of that load. The station (other than the Soak City station) could be either in Rivertown or Planet Snoopy tho.

  50. I don't think anyone is "due" anything, but think of it like this. Planet Snoopy has been expanded TWICE since Intimidator. One coaster has been removed and another closed this season. I can't blame KD folks for being upset, especially the level of teasing. Sent from my iOS 10 device
