  1. .....aconator? I think I turned out alright

  2. They literally just got into the 200’ range. I’d rather them not jump up to 300’ just to break some records. I seem to remember another coaster that was built to go to the next level to break some records and it didn’t turn out well....what was the name of that? Son of a b.....

  5. There's a reason why we haven't had a wooden coaster break the 200ft plane since 2000...

  8. I can agree with that. It paved the way for sure on ways not to do things for innovation in the wooden coaster world.

  9. Son of Beast wasn't a problem because of it being over 200 feet. The problem was the people who built it didn't even know how to build coasters. They basically rushed to get it done. The Rollercoaster Corporation of America was not good at building coasters. If Son of Beast were to have been built by CCI instead, it probably would be still in operation today and would probably be better than Shivering Timbers. Also, the lift hill structure wouldn't be a wooden structure. It would be like Goliath at SF Great America where it's held up by these massive steel beams.

  10. I'm showing my age here...but this is kind of funny. So I remembered going on this safari as a little girl, probably when I was about 5...and apparently didn't go back to the park again until after the ride was removed. When I went back and it was gone, I had for years convinced myself that I was a crazy person and that I had never been on a monorail safari at KI, that my 5 year old self just imagined it. No one I knew that had been to KI as a kid remembered it and even my parents werent' sure what I was recalling - yet they were the ones that took me... Then lo and behold, one random day a couple of years ago, I decided to google it all and I found all kinds of pictures, history, and even some video. It was nice to know that I wasn't crazy This article was very cool to read, thank you for sharing! Looks like a lot of work went in to gathering all of the history and details of the incident.

  11. AFAIK The Lion Country Safari was never opened year-round at KI. It was intended to, but never did. The park issued a press release the first week of October 1974 indicating the attraction would be open weekends only through November (originally intended for daily operations) and then closed for the winter months. (Mostly because the area was bracing for a hard winter - predicted by the farmers almanac.)

  12. I would love this! Maybe they could do it the old Action Theatre! You'd have to sign a whiplash waiver!

  13. Ideas for the Crypt building? Tear it down. And tear down the SOB station and Action FX Theater at this point. If KI isn't going to put these structures to better use than a haunted house for 1 month every season, they need to go. I'd honestly love to see the Blackout building, Slaughterhouse building, and Killmart go too, but I don't see that happening. At the very least, tear down the old rides that are only used for Haunt now. Such a tacky look. And I'm a big Haunt fan.

  15. I still want to know how the park will market Diamondback if a giga comes: "The tallest/fastest/longest coaster in the world to feature a splashdown" *FYI did you know Ohio is the state with the most coasters over 200ft?*

  16. Holy topic bump! This post is from eleven and a half years ago. I do not think that we will see anything from The Gravity Group at Kings Island any time soon. Especially with us getting a GCI in 2017.

  17. Actually, it wasn't just the launch system, RMC put new wireless sensors on the trains, last year during the offseason, they took those off, that's why the ride has been way more reliable than it was in 2016.

  18. They pushed the envelope too far. They apparently did something right and knew how to build coasters if they've got 6 coasters still in operation. No matter what, it was attempted to hit 200 feet before technology was really ready for it on a wooden coaster. All I am saying is that RMC while they are a reputable company...they just broke into the 200' range...their technology is likely not ready for the 300' range. If it's attempted to rush into a new "record" for something without the technology being ready, it can become dangerous to the companies involved/riders involved/parks involved. FYI...use the multi-quote option.

  19. Not to mention all of the issues with Lightning Rod, whether it is all RMCs fault or not.

  20. Boo Blasters is a ton of fun when your gun actually works...and when it doesn't, all I do is sit and think about how much cooler the whole ride could be...the worst is when I'm on it with my two older children, both boys...and one of their guns works and the other one's doesn't. They bicker and fight the whole entire time. lol

  21. Many forget, and recall PT through rose-colored glasses... but by the time Phantom Theater closed, well over half the effects were no longer working. The ride definitely showed its age. Although I would have loved it if the ride had been upgraded using the same theme, the issue was that many of the animatronics would have needed to be completely replaced. The change to SDATHC was largely due to the fact for less money than a refurbishment, the park could install a brand new, marketable experience. Simply fixing Phantom Theater would not have allowed them to market it as a new attraction. Interactive rides were HIGHLY popular, and the park saw the chance to add something that brought a new "twist" to the genre. For instance, many do not know this, but the character faces/hands in Phantom Theater themselves were very thin rubber skins that had to regularly be replaced. They stretched and melted with time and the park had to call the manufacturer to order new.... the manufacturer had to recreate them using the original molds, then have an artist paint them, then ship them, then they had to be re-installed. It was just part of the cost in keeping the ride operational. When a ride loses it's marketability, the land/building on/in which it exists is viewed by parks as "real-estate." If an aged attraction escalates in upkeep and dwindles in ridership, then the value of the land on which it resides outweighs the revenue it's helping generate. When it becomes expensive to maintain - much like a car - then the park pulls the plug for something new, marketable and cost effective.

  22. Here is an idea, Kings Island should have RMC make the first ever "wooden giga" RMC can totally do it! The lift hill structure would probably be like Goliath at Six Flags Great America. It could also take the record as the only inverting giga coaster.

  24. I think based upon what our GM has said that we will see something there sooner than later. It is important to note that he was the CFO at the time TRTR was built so he knows how much was spent on that ride. I think a nice dark ride would be great there and would be something they could keep open thru Winterfest.

  26. I know that it would be near impossible to bring back the original Kentons Cove Keelboat Canal, I just found that picture just to give an idea of a replacement. If at all possible, they could build a flume ride that goes through tunnels inside the building, build a rock structure on the outside using rebar and gunnite (spray concrete), similar to how they built Wonder Mountain at Canada's Wonderland. The closest ride similar to the Arrow Hydro Flumes are the Super Flumes built by Hopkins Rides. Super Flume video on Hopkins' YouTube page: https://youtu.be/t_59ERvzi4I

  27. I think the unthemed part of the building is an eyesore and would like to see it dressed up if an attraction were going to be placed in it. My choice would be flying theator. I do like the idea listed above to include it with the miami river lumber theme. Or just remove it so you can build out behind it. Maybe a modern flume or river battle with a couple of flats like a tilt o whirl and a screamin swing style ride?

  30. Maybe they would put B&M or Intamin in the snow. Although I don't see them putting anything in the snow. I still think we are getting a giga sometime in the next few years.

  31. They could move Xtreme Slyflyer to Rivertown and rename it to fit the theme of the area, like Cedar Point did with RipCord, renaming it Professor Delbert's Frontier Fling. Plus, it could open up some space in Action Zone for expansion.

  32. I think they should put in something like electro spin at carowinds, a high level flat ride , there are no flats in rivertown, I’d like them to put in another top spin but I know that’s not happening , but it would be cool to see something like mystery mine .

  33. I still haven't heard a whisper of a rumor one way or the other. I'm obviously really hoping that KI continues their relationship with Les Productions Haut-Vol to bring another new Cirque show to the KI Theater. However the past three years, I had heard about as legitimate rumors as you can get without an official announcement by now, usually by the end of Cirque for the year. This time, silence. The only thing I know for sure is that the set for Origins was broken down and removed (a friend saved a couple small chunks for me), but it was expected that Origins would only have a two year run, just as Cirque Imagine did. Prior to its end I had assumed a new Haut-Vol production would replace it but I'm a little concerned not to have any verification. If not Cirque, I hope it is something else interesting and up to that quality!

  38. I think it would either have to be a dark ride or some sort of water ride. Unfortunately, I don't see the return of Kenton's Cove ever happening. I think another coaster in that spot would be overkill, with The Beast, Diamondback, and Mystic Timbers all in that one spot. So my suggestion would be a dark ride. Perhaps one that is linked to the story of Mystic Timbers and possibly even The Beast. However, if the building continues to sit attraction-less save for Haunt, then my suggestion is to liberally place vines and roots to appear as if that gnarly-looking tree has taken over.

  43. My last day of classes is May 4. I'm considering joining Great Ohio Coaster Club and making sure I won't be scheduled to work on May 18-19 (though it was cool meeting/seeing Coasterstock attendees enjoying Vortex when I was working there the morning of May 19 last year!). If things work out, this will be my first Coasterstock. -BFF, who's excited that Vortex is once again included in the 10:30-midnight ERT on Friday, May 17.

  44. KI has tried things like this. The problem is the guests have to follow it, which in KI's case they generally don't. IJ:ST was one of the first rides that I can remember doing this at KI.

  46. I feel for a park like KI (or most of the CF parks), the simpler the themeing, the better. For instance, gravestones, lights, misters on signs, etc... are all relatively easy to maintain. A functioning rotor on a helicopter and working flames that sit outside 100% of the time, not so much. For Mystic Timbers, they got the outside stuff right, in terms of the Que and the old truck, as well as the backstory. The more complex stuff in the shed is all protected from the elements, meaning they can keep them operational for longer periods of time. The less moving parts, the easier it is to maintain, expenses are more predictable.

  48. It’s no where as busy as KI’s passholder preview. To be honest most passholders at Dollywood are folks who go to see shows. You can expect a crowd, but it’s no where near KI.

  49. I know (at least) chugh43, IndyGuy4KI, electricsun, @pianoman, @acole5292 and I will be there. I'm not sure what any of us are doing for lodging yet, but sharing hotel rooms and/or rental houses (eg. Airbnb) seems likely. Adam and I weren't big fans of the Lake Rudolph rental RV's last year. I plan to buy the all-day Friday ticket as well. It really makes sense coming from as far away as Columbus, since traveling would kill the entire day regardless. Might as well get there early. As a reminder, early bird discounts for HoliWood Nights ends January 10.
