  1. Sorry. I refuse to blindly praise people who aren’t doing their jobs. Like I said, some - not all - fall under these categories. Now people are getting injured. Great job. Sorry, I critique. I’m praise when praise needs to be given, I claim foul when foul should be claimed. I’m an observer, not a fanboi like some.

  2. People's tastes change with time, and marathon riding from open to close certainly isn't for everyone. Personally, I've found myself riding even more as I get older. The presence of gray hair at coaster events gives me hope that I'll be able to continue marathoning coasters for a very long time to come.

  3. Six Flags Great Adventure bans all loose articles on El Toro and Kingda Ka, even if they're in a zippered pocket. There are no metal detectors, but guests with a phone out in line or in the station will be kicked out of line. As annoying as this policy is for enthusiasts who know to use zipper pockets, I'm beginning to support it on rides with extreme changes in speed/direction. Having my phone in line isn't worth risking someone else knocking my eye out with their phone. Each coaster at Kentucky Kingdom has a large sign explaining that phones can't be out while riding. Security there doesn't mess around, and guests seem to take the rules very seriously as a result. I witnessed one very unhappy group being escorted off park grounds when I was at KK two weeks ago.

  5. I think there is a distinct difference in 10PM on a weeknight and running past midnight. But, yes, you live next to an amusement park, it's going to make noise. That was a choice you made when you bought the house.

  7. At 28 years old, I still try to ride as much as possible. I can confer with Jcgoble on days with no waits being exhausting at times though- it can get tiresome to keep walking around all the time. But I did set a new personal record at Kings Island this year for myself for most rides ever ridden (includes re-rides) in 1 day, with 25. On a Saturday no less, shockingly (it was kinda cool and chilly though). Going back to the park tomorrow for my 3rd trip of 2018 (which will tie my record of 3 visits I made in 2014), since it is another Saturday this time in June and it will also be Father's Day, I am expecting big crowds so I do not expect to push for maximum # of rides in a day this time. My sister wants to do the waterpark, and it is forecast to be 90+ degrees, so I expect the waterpark to get packed. Part of me hopes that the crowds who do come go there, though, so that the waits on the dry side of the park will be more manageable since the dry side of the park is the one I like better. Plus even if there are crowds on both sides, I know Vortex, Racer, Adventure Express, etc. usually have much shorter waits than other big rides due to their age and high capacity, so I can always fall back on and ride those if it gets crowded since that works usually during Haunt. Plus just getting out of the house and going to Kings Island again will be a fun experience. (Though with the forecasted temps, I am gonna have to drinks lots of water and use lots of sunscreen.)

  8. Egads! You are probably talking about me! And I see people who are lots older than me and I hope I still spry enough at their age to still ride roller coasters!

  11. I did 84 rides in one day at the park by myself (9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.). It was an early June weekday, the year Diamondback opened (2009) and about a week before SoB closed for good. So, before Fast Pass even existed. I managed to ride every adult coaster and flat ride at least twice and several laps on Diamondback that day, as they were allowing re-rides and it wasn't busy at all. It was fun at the time, I had recently moved to Mason and I had always wanted to spend a whole day at the park. Now after living here for over a decade and developing a serious anxiety disorder, I find myself only visiting the park with friends and only spending 90 minutes to 2 hours at the park. I'm more than fine with riding just a few rides. Usually it's just 1 lap on Banshee, Diamondback and Mystic Timbers then it's time to make the short trip home. I also once got a couple of rides on Diamondback with a guy from England who was on a coaster trip of the U.S. He said he had gotten 68 rides on Talon at Dorney before traveling to KI. This was also on a weekday early into the season and before Fast Pass. He said he had already gotten 76 rides on Diamondback that day and was hoping to get another 10-12 rides in before the park closed at 10 p.m. Unfortunately, I don't think he met his goal, as I left the park about 15 minutes later and as soon as I got to my car, there was a massive downpour.

  13. And how many times do we hear a ride op over the speaker say "if you are sitting on a handrail please get down". They have to repeat several times because nobody pays attention.
    2 points
  14. No one said it was either the ride ops’ faults or that spieling was directly correlated. If you read my original post, you will see that I implied that the safety of the guests is shared: the ride ops give the rules and the guests must comply. The only way that spieling comes into play is the fact that everyone in the station is using everything in their being to tune out what’s said over the mics when they treat being on the mic as play time. So what if they did tell them to put their phone away (I don’t believe for a second that it was secured) and they honestly didn’t hear them because they were conditioned to tune out what’s being said? It’s simply a theory.

  15. Oh no, I'm not trying to say its the fault of the operators at all, the fault is 100% on the individual with the phone. I'm just saying that if the operators were joking around on the PA instead of giving instructions on loose articles, the fault could be on them. There have been a few times when I've gone to parks where the associates don't even ask riders to secure loose articles and instead joke around on the mic. After an op/associate says to secure loose articles, the riders should be responsible if their items fall out of their pockets.
    2 points
  16. I think ride ops need to do a better job of reminding guests about loose articles instead of joking around over the PA system like what @BoddaH1994 says. The guest with the phone is the one at fault but if the ride associates were joking and messing around, the blame could be shifted to the park.

  18. And it's something they'll never be able to prove. 99% of people that visit the park just leave their phone, keys, and wallet in their pockets, unsecured. From the 2017 Guest Assistance Guide: "Loose articles including cell phones, pagers, hats, cameras, stuffed animals, purses, backpacks, umbrellas, beverage containers, personal entertainment devices, etc. Items must be safely secured in cargo pockets, a waist pack, in a bin on the ride platform, left in a locker, or with a non-rider." Funny they mention waist pack, because a lot of people have mentioned that they've been asked to remove theirs.

  19. I can't believe I'm saying this (), but I actually agree with Tera Ryzing on this one. I'm not sure how a cell phone in a pocket is something the ride operators, spieling or not, could have done something about. It sounds pretty established that the phone was in his pocket, not in his hand.

  21. I check my zippers multiple times before a ride. I check them in line, when I'm next in line, when I sit down, and often again on the lift hill. If your zipper is not zipped, that's purely your own fault for not checking to be sure.

  23. Wow- my sister sent me a message about this on Facebook, and it's a bit disturbing. A roller coaster at the Daytona Beach Boardwalk derailed earlier today, and while no deaths have been reported, it is claimed in the article a few people did fall 30 feet or so. Around 10 others had to be rescued by the local fire department. Hopefully, no one has died or been seriously injured as a result of this accident, though falling 30 feet probably guarantees at least injuries. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-roller-coaster-derailed-daytona-20180614-story.html I looked on RCDB, and I think this is the coaster which had the accident (looked up coasters in Daytona Beach). It is a Pinfari Zyklon, and while it opened at this Boardwalk in 2013, it was originally built in the 1970's and has been relocated a LOT. It's one of 2 coasters at the small boardwalk, and its the bigger of the two. https://rcdb.com/8931.htm

  24. @malem I hope I'm still riding coasters when I'm a lot older! I occasionally see middle-aged/older adults ride Vortex and WindSeeker. I always think, "I hope I'm still into coasters when I'm their age!" As for rides in one day, I know on some days I've gotten at least 20 rides total in a 4ish-hour visit. As for individual rides, those who know me well know I have ridden Vortex as many as 18 times in one day (October 14, 2012, and October 20, 2017) and I'm planning to ride at least 20 times in one day this year! And yes, my head is/will be okay, as it has been ever since I first rode Vortex almost eight years ago.

  25. Rides are just a lot more aggressive now than they used to be, people do think their phones are secured, but a pocket is not secure unless it's sealed. With the way the seats and restraints hug you, especially on modern coasters, the phone is probably already half way out when you're sitting down and up the lift hill. Then factor in all the up and downs and a phone can even be pushed out of a back pocket. There needs to just be more attention called to the issue, and people need to be educated that even pockets aren't secure. Then fines/punishments need to be aggressive and posted as mandated by the state in case of accidents.

  29. I, too, have found that as I get older*, I take fewer rides and more time simply enjoying the atmosphere, and my days at the park are often shorter as a result. Rarely do I show up before gates open and stay until closing anymore. In fact, having short/non-existent lines burns me out even faster than standing in 15- to 30-minute lines. *I was 23 years old when I first got a KI season pass in 2010, and am 31 years old now. So this can happen at a younger age than some might expect. It's not exclusive to Kings Island; I did far fewer rides at Holiday World and Kentucky Kingdom two weeks ago than I did on past visits as well.

  31. I think nothing is done (other than not having staff to do it) because they don't want negative FB reviews of someone saying their pass was revoked because they had their phone out. Personally I think the bad press of a serious injury or death is worse, but until such event happens, countless selfies and videos will continue to be posted from on rides... Metal detectors at each ride will end up being the solution if it isn't got under control by other means...

  32. I think it will come down to making it an assault charge which is a felony if an item on you comes loose during a ride and hits someone. Maybe after someone is charged with a felony and incarcerated or heavily fined that these people will wake up. Right now Ride ops just kinda ignore it. All I’ve heard is put the phone away. They should be contacting security right away. No verbal warning should be given since there are signs that are warnings. In fact someone on this forum was struck with a phone just the other day. It’s getting ridiculous Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  34. Yep. You make an excellent point. Regardless of what some might claim, retweets and likes are in fact endorsements. I do not the circumstances, but this is an incredibly stooge-like move, especially given what’s happening within their own chain. 100% inexcusable. **Also, I want to correct my original statement. I stated that @KingsIslandPR liked the status. This was mentioned in error.

  37. I got into an altercation with an idiot at SFGAM recently over a camera in use on a ride. He rode Goliath directly in front of me, while attempting to video the entire ride with his hands stretched in the air. Because he was an idiot... he couldn't control his arms... so they flailed backwards into my face the entire ride. I spent the entire time dodging the possibility of him letting go and my getting hit with his cell. I cant tell you anything about the ride except that I had this dummy being negligent the entire time. He had pulled the cell out and begun filming BEFORE we left the station... I even yelled for him to put it away going up the lift - but he "couldnt" hear me due to the loud lift I guess. (Oh brother) Ride ops clearly saw it and turned a blind eye. When we hit the final brakes, I grabbed the hood of his sweatshirt and tugged it as hard as I could to get his attention. I then had to parent the punk... who of course called me every name in the book, on why what he did was moronic. When we reached the station, I promptly told the ride ops, who did nothing - literally NOTHING. My opinion is, it is because of their age and attitude, they either dont care - or are too afraid to deal with the rule breakers. Now, if I (who avoids conflict, and is about as non-confrontational as they come) was able to get that agitated, its a wonder more parks dont often have more altercations far worse. Ambivalence to the safety of others is a plague affecting parks. And it needs addressed or more accidents of this type will continue to occur.

  38. ^^Thats a pretty neat concept. Where would you put it in the park? You guys probably know that I've been huge on the names Power Force and Steel Beast, this one is Power Force and here is the location I have which would require building some new maintenance buildings.

  40. No wristband needed... The current equipment is used at other parks to run the transferable system... Pick a 6 digit pin for the day... When you go up to a locker bank, you put the 6 digit pin in the kiosk, then it operates exactly the same as if you just paid for a locker... When you're done with the locker, hit 'End Rental' and your 6 digit pin will then let you rent a locker at another bank of lockers (this is to prevent people from taking up a locker at every bank of lockers at the same time)...

  41. Even though I try to keep my luggage down to things I can fit in my cargo pockets, I can understand the need for a backpack to some degree. If one intends to spend the entire operating day at the park, often changes of clothing/alternative clothing (like jackets or pants/shorts) are necessary. Personally, I use my truck as my locker for things like this, but teens are much more likely to be simply dropped off by parents in the morning, I would think. They'd need to carry in anything they want to change during the day. Also, people who have vehicles but don't get to the park as early as I do, it can be quite a hike through the lot since there aren't trams anymore. Even though I rarely use the lockers, if there was a season long roaming locker pass, I would seriously consider it just for the convenience of not always having to hike out to the truck if I buy something or come up with extra ways to squirrel away hats and gloves on Haunt nights (where it often starts at 70 degrees and ends in the 40s) when I can't go back out to the vehicle.

  42. I was thinking this too. I was kind of annoyed to pay the locker fee at first bc I’m originally from Orlando and that was my experience at universal. On another note, I noticed quite a few kids just hiding their bags behind bushes at Cedar Point, risky but clever lol.

  44. Universal Studios Florida offers free lockers in a couple spots. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit requires the use of a locker. There is an amount of "Free" time based on the current wait plus a cushion. After that, it charges.

  45. On the contrary, I love our current entrance. As you approach you see hints of rides sticking out above, giving clues about what is to come, but when you walk through you are suddenly bathed in the majestic splendor of International Street, with the Eiffel Tower straight ahead. It's as if you pass from one world to another on entering the park. It's a wonderful first impression that reminds me of the Magic Kingdom entrance as you pass under the train station. I would be sad to see it replaced with a coaster.
