  1. I think Vortex still feels a nice niche at the park. It is nice to look at and it is a great people eater. While not the smoothest ride I would take it any day over something like Invertigo. As far as BLSC goes, I still really enjoy the ride but after riding Verbolten this summer I would love to see BLSC get a re-theme that fits in with the area a little better.

  2. Hard to believe that Peach Basket was just operating yesterday. They're moving fast, possibly to look out for winter weather to avoid delays.

  4. Nope. They should focus on enhancing what they currently serve before adding new menu items.

  6. Fun Fact, Kings Island's #12 locomotive had a nearly identical locomotive made in 1972 for Lakeside Amusement Park located in Salem, VA. This locomotive was later bought by Busch Gardens Williamsburg in the 90s and received a huge overhaul to where its not even recognizable to its original design. https://www.facebook.com/Fireup611/posts/did-you-know-that-611-is-not-the-only-roanoke-area-steam-locomotive-still-in-ope/830368660471477/

  7. A couple of things to consider about the actual layout that might be answered this fall. Will the antique cars path compromise the Field of Screams que tent? Field of Screams is returning for Haunt this year so I feel like they aren't going to touch the tent or the area, unless they get rid of the tent last minute and re-route the Field of Screams entrance for next season. Here's my crude concept.

  9. Son of Beast was a ride I wish I could have ridden. I was only eight when it opened in 2000 and I had a fear of roller coasters at the time. I didn't get a chance to go to Kings Island from about 2004 to 2011 and during that time I didn't pay much attention to the park so I kind of forgot about it. I finally got a chance to go to Kings Island in June of 2012 with some friends of mine and when we walked into Action Zone I kept looking up and staring in amazement at that monstrous wooden coaster wondering what it was and why it was not running. When I got home I did some research on the park's history and learned all about Son of Beast. I still had a fear of roller coasters at the time but I was hoping it would open again but as we all know just a month later, Kings Island announced it would be removed from the park. On Labor day that year I rode The Beast for the first time and that was all I needed to get over my fear of coasters and since then I have been left to wonder if I would have liked Son of Beast. I love that we have Banshee, its my second favorite ride in the park but I do miss seeing that giant wooden monster looking over Action Zone and the rest of the park.

  10. Every once and a while you see myself or other creative users post theming ideas and unique concepts on different threads, so I thought I'd create a thread for everyone to share their KI concept art

  12. I'm sorry but I really disagree, I absolutely love Haunt and was blown away last year. I had thought Halloweekends at CP would surpass KI, but I feel ki blows them away. I personally am glad they took the skeleton key rooms out. We have a very limited budget and never could afford fright lane and seeing people get to see different things than I could just because they have more money just really bothered me. I know I'm the minority on this topic but it always just made me feel like I was missing out.

  15. I agree. Dollar days has a twofold effect. It brings the crowds in thereby upping admissions at the gate and it also allows the park to get rid of summer inventory before the holidays. As far as patrons are concerned, slap 99 cents on anything, people will flock to the product like shoppers on Black Friday.

  16. I did not get any of the $1 food, as much as I wanted to. Not surprisingly, I focused more on the rides and appreciated how short lines were compared to what I had heard about yesterday's and Saturday's crowds. The longest I waited was 20 minutes to ride Flume around 5:00. But after that, lines became less as the most I waited for WindSeeker was the time of the ongoing cycle to complete (1-3 minutes), and for Vortex the most I had to wait was two trains (3 minutes) before I boarded.

  17. Here is a pic of DJ Duke Edwards spinning at the old Coney Disco from my 1978 employee yearbook. IIRC, he worked here during weekdays in the summer, but was a prime time DJ at WOKV (the 50,000 watt voice of Disco in the tri-state) for his regular gig.

  18. Lol! I remember. right where the attendant splits the riders between front and back, in the open space used to be a DJ that would spin the boogie, and turn the beat around...

  19. I vaguely recall someone once saying the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack* would play in The Beast's line queue and everybody would start dancing. Can you dig it? *Or at least, "Staying Alive"

  20. My vote would be to have all ET lights go out starting at 11. Then the lights slowly start lighting up from the bottom. 1/2 way up at 11:30 and the star lights up at midnight.

  21. @PKIVortex took the words out of my mouth! Not every coaster is glass smooth, but I think that is a good thing. A lot of wooden coasters (at least if they're not Mystic Timbers) are not totally smooth but a lot of people enjoy them. The Beast makes a great example of that. A coaster does not have to be totally rattle- or roughness-free to be a good ride (though they may not be as comfortable). We all have our opinions. Vortex may not offer the smoothest ride, but it still has a solid spot in KI's lineup (and the hearts of many, including mine), has the historical significance AND a lot of people still enjoy it today (including myself). After all, it has withstood the test of time for 31 years and counting, whether you like it or not. B&Ms definitely deserve their rave reviews. However, they would not have come to be if it weren't for the technological advancements and breakthroughs through the tireless efforts of Schwartzkopf, Arrow, Vekoma and numerous other manufacturers. Nowadays, many overlook the historical significance of coasters like Vortex and how they were state-of-the-art for their time. But that does not mean no one appreciates them anymore. I love Diamondback, but Vortex has my heart. <3 -BFF, a proud Arrow fan.

  22. I'm not sure if I like the changes they are making around that area... Feels like it's going to really narrow the pathways too much. Hopefully I'm wrong and the overall picture/finished product will be really nice and reinforcing of the coney mall area.

  23. Screamin' Swing would be great. Only ridden Barnstormer at Dollywood but loved it. It would also be one of the easiest to theme as well to any area of the park. Think would work best with some sort of mining/drilling or possibly farm theme in Rivertown or a flying/aviation theme in X-Base. Would be a perfect addition for Kings Island as well since it is a major thrill ride but is one that kids can enjoy as well so still kind of fits the family vibe the park seems to go for overall while being a major flat ride too. I'd be fine with more standard smaller flat rides as well, just feel our park needs more of them overall, but some big ones like that would, and great for more of an "off year" to have a big impact ride with a lower price tag.

  26. Sweet train questions! First off its actually really dangerous to run a train backwards at full speed for multiple reasons. 1.) All the power is still in the front of the train in the locomotive so if the train goes full speed in reverse and has to stop, the coaches will keep momentum going before it comes to a complete stop. 2.) The engineers wouldn't be able to see jack which would make it very dangerous to operate at full speed. If you notice when they back the trains up at night, they do it slowly and there's an engineer, or maintenance person on the rear coach with some type of communication device. Now on the other hand, the locomotive can be rotated and can pull the train in reverse which is a lot safer because the engineer can still see relatively well. Skip to 2:08 to see what I mean. In theroy the trains can go backwards, but it would involve the locomotive being coupled to the rear of the train and pulling it in the opposite direction- imagine the locomotive at the back of the train pulling it backwards under the shed, past the train shed, to Soak City, to the bridge, under Diamondback, and pulling into Rivertown. Its possible to do but a lot of work to prepare, especially requiring a train to park the coaches in the station, having the decouple from the train and have it go around the whole circut then couple it to the rear car all before the park opens. Besides, I'm not confident that our locomotivea can pull a train because of their long cowcatchers and couplings in the front. In old days, cowcatchers could be placed on the tender so it wouldn't hit animals or people while going behind.

  28. Weather will not keep me from enjoying the festivities this year. Celebrating my 45th birthday at KI is going to be amazing with or without rides. Last time was 20 years ago at WDW. If anyone knows, when was the last time KI was open on NYE. I would imagine sometime in the 80's or possible 90's PKI Winterfest but if anyone has an answer this is the forum to let it be answered.

  29. It looks very good. Like someone said, this one looks somewhat like Maverick. I was wondering if this was going to be like Time Traveler. I guess not quite a spinning coaster. Frankly, Carowinds really needs this. Fury 325 is a great coaster. Afterburn is a good invert and Intimidator is a good hyper. Other than that, there is nothing else that really stands out. The construction is well under way. Then again, Carowinds is a worth a trip just to ride Fury 325. Keep in mind that there is no ERT until Memorial Day at Carowinds. They do not have any more ERT rest of this year either. Carowinds open late March every year.

  36. I could definitely see a Giga sometime. I could also see it being terrain coaster as well using the deep valley towards the back of the park, KI is a fantastic park for terrain. With the exception of a few coasters, the others dip into a valley or fly through a tunnel at some point. In fact I wouldn’t mind seeing a Giga that starts at perhaps 200 feet and drops into a tunnel to complete the Giga height. A coaster fantasy of mine was to see a coaster whose successive hills where higher than the last. 200 feet to 250 to 300. Etc. tunnels and terrain can make that happen.
