  1. It feels like just a couple weeks ago I saw that green paint....oh wait, yes I did.

  2. A news reporter talking about roller coasters is like that person at a Super Bowl party that wonders "how they're able to paint that yellow line on the field so fast"...

  5. So the confirmation has been confirmed that the confirmation of which coaster is going away will be confirmed tomorrow?

  7. Wow, people are really choosing sides between Vortex and Firehawk like that dress that was either black & blue or white & gold. Cannot wait to see the announcement.

  8. Carolyn Weaver, the longtime manager of the Arrow division of S&S worldwide retired just this month. That in and of itself is fairly unimportant in the context of this discussion, but in the blog post announcing her retirement, they named the new manager of that division (indicating that they plan to continue running that division) and, importantly, emphasized that "S&S continues to support all Arrow rides with their parts and refurbishment needs" http://s-s.com/ss-worldwide-announces-retirement-carolyn-weaver/ Arrow parts are a huge market for S&S. That sector of their business probably won't be gone until all of the Arrows are gone. And since some Arrows are now over 50 years old and others are not even 20, I'd say that division could continue operating 30 or more years into the future. And even then, so many Arrows were built that parts could be salvaged from retired Arrow rides for many more years to come afterward. And that's a fairly common practice. If my information is correct, one of the Corkscrew trains at Cedar Point happens to be one of the Double Loop trains from Geauga Lake.

  10. I always imagined Vortex was the robot from Queen's album News of the World

  11. Nope. No announcement yet on when The Announcement will happen. Be sure to keep an eye on our Announcement (err News) section for an announcement of when The Announcement is likely to occur.

  12. Looking back at Vortex's logo, I just remembered. Vortex is a robot, and isn't relating to wind.

  13. The commercial for Vortex at KI when it premiered was great! It featured an animated version of the robot hand actually grabbing and twisting the track.

  14. As a mechanical/manufacturing engineer, I may be able to clear this up. This could be a bit of a wording issue. I doubt they will stop SUPPLYING parts, but they may have stopped stocking or producing those parts themselves. As equipment gets older and costs go up, they may have made the business decision that purchasing those parts may be costing them money and released the parts to be supplied by the park, and not Vekoma. When this happens, prices for the parts go up, because they aren't being made in the quantity that Vekoma was ordering them and also may possibly be made to order. Also, in manufacturing, business is booming. The lead times on everything have gone through the roof. Generally on a machined component, you are looking at 6 to 8 weeks from a reputable supplier, depending on size, material, etc. Just my .02.

  15. If it really is a giga coming in 2020 then them starting to tease it wouldn’t be that surprising.

  16. I, too, am hoping for Firehawk's removal over Vortex's. It was my first looping coaster and it feels like such a staple in the park's skyline since its all I remember, with the Eiffel Tower and Vortex being the 2 tallest attractions in the 90s until Action Zone came about. I still thoroughly enjoy riding Vortex.

  17. KI will be solidifying their legacy as the "defunct-ride-turned-permanent-haunted-maze-structure" Capital of the World!... The Smurf Ride (CarnEVIL), Action Theater (Urgent Scare), Son of Beast (Wolf Pack), Crypt (Madame Fatale), and now Firehawk (maybe alien-themed to complement FOF)...let me know if I've missed any...

  18. Just so long as it isn't The Racer that's leaving, I'll probably be alright with the announcement.

  19. Undoubtedly. Yet another reason (among many) why all three KI Arrow coasters (contrary to some belief), are among the rides FURTHEST from the chopping block in the forseeable future, baring metal fatigue.

  21. I mean, to be fair, Cedar Fair does a similar thing, just less obviously. Shivering Timbers Twisted Timbers Mystic Timbers Soaring Timbers and likewise: Firehawk Nighthawk Kiddy Hawk Steel Hawk Skyhawk Thunderhawk (twice!)

  22. He knows exactly what he is doing. And I'd conjecture that at this point he knows what he needs to know about the project. (IIRC, in an interview here on KIC, he doesn't know details until the time is right so he can maintain plausible deniability.) Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

  26. It'll either be tomorrow, or hopefully for the official 10/28/ funeral (if there is one) . I remember CP dropped RMC hints at their Mean Streak funeral.

  27. Does anyone think KI will drop a small 2020 hint tomorrow at the announcement?

  28. I will be waiting on line around 9:45 with a box of tissues in case its Vortex. If it's Firehawk I may jump for joy!

  29. If you recall Son of Beast was torn down then a year later Banshee was built. Whatever is leaving tomorrow, I bet they'll start on construction and land clearing soon after or during the 2019 season.

  31. A new thread will be created for the announcement. We have to do that to update the front page. The confirmation thread will be locked. This one will remain. I hope that helps clear up why we are doing that way.

  32. Here in this thread, the other thread or a new 3rd thread?

  33. Their article says "A majority of coaster enthusiasts on forums like KI Central believe Vortex will have its last rides this fall. Why?". Pretty sure last time I checked the poll it was roughly 70 percent for Firehawk. Gotta love the GP media.

  34. Yes. Someone did say that. So you are saying the Ferengis at Vekoma are gouging CF on self sealing stem bolts? Not a good look.
    3 points
  35. No one said they stopped making them. The parts are expensive not impossible to purchase. Anyways this is out of date, Vekoma has totally redesigned the Flying Dutchman and the next generation model is being built right now at Phantasialand in Germany. Basiclly the entire coaster has been redesigned from the track to the trains. It’s a much better design (assuming it is reliable) but nothing is going to be compatible with the original version. Here is a video of the prototype testing. The train is sideways at load so all the seats are next to each other upright in the station. It goes up the lift hill in that orientation and they rotate 90 degrees as you approach the top of the lift hill to put you in the correct orientation.

  36. This exactly! I can confirm this from experience. Every day I am there working, I see countless 48” kids ride Vortex, most of whom love it! It always makes my day when I see or hear a kid say “Can we go again?” especially if they just rode for the first time! Vortex still holds its own rightful place in KI’s lineup as the only 48” looping coaster, which makes it the perfect ride for the youngsters already ready to brave their first inversions. As a Vortex associate, I get to witness those special moments every work day, and it’s one of my favorite things about my #KIBestJobEver! I love working Firehawk as well, though it went down twice the last time I was there. But when it’s up, it’s one of my favorite rides besides Vortex to work as well as ride. The main difference is the 54” requirement, so I don’t see as many young thrill-seekers there. But it’s still fun. I thought Firehawk has always fit in well with the X-Base theme. Though as some of you have mentioned, I do see how it is also the odd one out among Kings Island’s coasters. Unlike Vortex, Firehawk never really found its own niche at Kings Island, even after eleven years...the only thing that’s kept it going is its unconventional design of being a flying coaster (which is a good thing, don’t get me wrong!).

  38. Ohhhhhh, now it all makes sense! To raise cash, CF is selling off KI (restinpiecesKI) to Ed Hart et al. Firehawk IS moving to KK. Ed will begin his chain of Kings/Kingdom parks. How could I have been so blind? Note: this is sarcasm. @Ben43065, good eye on the CF logo. I was wondering if there was a clue in it myself.

  41. Agreed. It would really suck to finally get a Giga and have it tied with Millennium Force.

  42. Lol. “Please buy this awesome coaster from us for 15 million dollars. However it is a one time use disposable product. If ANYTHING goes wrong don’t call us. Sign and date right here.” Given how crappy most of their other coasters have been, I wouldn’t be surprised.

  45. Thanks for sharing, I am glad that you enjoy your job so much. When my nephew reached 48” he was so proud of himself when he got to ride Vortex for the first time. (I am sure it looks massive when you are young.)

  46. My daughter made 48” at the end of last season. She finally got up the nerve to ride Vortex this summer. It’s now her favorite ride in the park. I know she’ll be sad if it goes. Even though it beats me up I would be sad too. I don’t care much about Firehawk. I think I only rode it once this season. But that’s just me. I’m sure it has its share of riders that would be sad to see it go.
