  1. I love all the TLC that Cedar Fair is showing Kings Island this year. It's an easy solution to toss a new roller coaster in the park and bring in new people. It's a different beast (no pun intended) altogether to spend a year acknowledging the park's history and the role that nostalgia plays in bringing many back to the park. I get excited for a new coaster like anyone else. But to see a glockenspiel on the Festhaus, The Beast prints on the ground, the return of the Antiques...there's an almost chemical response that hits the same feelings I had when I was a kid in the '80s attending the park with my grandparents. This is what makes me want to come back year after year with my kids and why even though Cedar Point would technically be my "home park" (I live in the Detroit area), I go to Kings Island every year and haven't been to CP in about five.

  6. Went past CSF today.... lots of track sitting outside. Appears to be the right size for a hyper/giga. Take a look and tell me what you think. The track is a dark red/brown color. I’d assume this is for a 2020 attraction. Photo taken safely from the street (legally).

  7. Agreed, with the projected big ride announcement of next season, it’s nice to see small things being reintroduced into the park.

  8. Great to see the park paying attention to small things like that. A perfect way to help celebrate the ride's 40th anniversary.

  11. I first rode The Beast with my dad in the summer of 2000 just before I turned 9. I even still have the on-ride photo. =) Even with Racer already underneath my belt, I was so nervous since that first lift was so high (at the time) and I practically had no idea what was out there. What always makes me laugh is seeing my apprehensive self cover my ears in anticipation for the tunnel (I had really sensitive hearing at the time and loud tunnels scared the crap out of me). The drop into the double helix was especially terrifying, but by the time we hit the final brakes, I was in love. My family had been visiting Kings Island every summer at least since maybe '97. For a long time I was really just a kid who was obsessed with theme parks and roller coasters in typical child like fashion, but The Beast was probably the coaster that turned me into a true enthusiast. From that first ride, it went from an obsession to a lifestyle. If I were to guess, I probably have more rides on The Beast than any other coaster at Kings Island. It's a really, really special milestone coaster for me. Also, I've posted this link once before somewhere on this website, but here's a review I wrote two years ago showing my full thoughts on The Beast and why it's so special.

  13. I have heard people complain about Mystic Timbers being too short of a ride and that Kings Island will be getting a roller coaster that is like Kingda Ka as it is the best roller coaster in existence They said it not me LOL

  19. My wife and I go up to the point 3 times a year (first Sun. Mon. Tues. & Wed. they are open, a weekend with the grandchildren during the year and the last weekend they are open). My biggest advice would be stay at the Breakers! It is a little more expensive but early season they do have discounted rooms for platinum pass holders (put in the promo code PASS when reserving online). You get to park the car and not fight parking each day. Staying there get's you early entry and allows you to go back to the room and change if you get to wet on the rides or you need a rest. Plus you can pack sandwiches, etc. to save money on food. Word of caution, there are NO Coffee makers in the rooms! We have a small hamilton-beach kureg we always take up with us. The staff at the Breakers is top-notch and I've always found them more than helpful and friendly. Keep in mind that if you go before Memorial day, schools are in session which is a plus, but not all the shows are going (plus the new Frontier land will not be open until Memorial day this year). Make sure to ride the train, especially from the back of the park (near steel vengence) to the front. That section has a lot of boneville to enjoy. The other half is mostly a view of the lake. You can also get Famous Dave's and carry it back to your room (we have done this after the park has closed. Seems they keep the gates open for an hour after the park closes. Perkins in the Breakers is also great for breakfast, dinner or lunch. Tomo's hibachi grill in the Breakers is our favorite place to eat! Fridays in my opinion is overpriced and can be skipped. You can also order Domino's and they will deliver. Usually I get in an hour early and ride Maverick. I've ridden in 4 times in a row without getting off in the mornings before the crowds get back there. GateKeeper is the fastest line in the park so never be scared of the size of the line there. Also they don't close the line until the park closes so keep that in mind. Millennium Force has a decent line too but know that if it breaks down don't get out of line. Usually it is only down for about 10-15 minutes. Tues and Wed are definitely less crowded and you should have no problem covering the park in 2 days. If you have a platinum pass flash it everywhere. Most places (Perkins for example) will give you a discount with it. Also if you have a FunPix season pass make sure to go to the FunPix location at the front of the park to make sure your platinum pass is "synced" so it will work. Just ask them to verify they see it in their system. Finally dress for the weather. A windbreaker is a MUST. Know that the weather forecast for Sandusky is different than it is for the Point. Temps are a little cooler being on the water. Hope you have a great time!

  21. Thanks! Back of the park sounds like a given. The layout makes me appreciate KI's layout more than I do. Solid tips all around thanks so much. Thanks this helps, makes sense about the popular rides and we'll surely knock them out early and often. A FL+ might be worth it as well it seems. Having so many "A+" coasters is tough to wrap my head around and a mental game plan is starting to form .

  23. I think they'll keep the tables. Otherwise, people would have to walk a distance to eat LaRosa's.

  24. I would be shocked if tables didn't return; especially, with those inserts close to the fountain. I hope there are new, quality tables with themed umbrellas.

  25. I hope they keep some tables along I-Street. Its one of my favorite places to eat in the park, though, having less shade might be problematic to that end.

  27. I have too many fond memories of Beast to mention, but I’ll focus on three. Last season, I had a ride on an evening when there were distant storms. Although the lightning wasn’t close enough to close the ride, the random flashes of light and rolls of thunder made the ride disorienting and spooky. There was one bright flash that happened just as we exited the last tunnel before the second lift hill. I thought it was just possible I was going to exit the ride at Candlelight Park (like in R.L. Stine’s The Beast books). When I learned The Beast was approaching its 50 millionth rider a few years ago, I rode a lot trying to be the “winner.” One evening, I entered the station and saw Don Helbig milling around on the exit side, so I hurriedly picked an empty row in the middle of the train rather than whichever row I had been planning to wait for (probably 14 or 17). After we were in our seats and checked, they announced the 50 millionth rider was on our train. He was a few rows ahead of me, so I guess I was the 50,000,005th or sixth but we ALL felt like the 50 millionth riders. Everybody was whooping it up during the ride, and continued celebrating on the brake run. It was very special. I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in several tours behind-the-scenes at Beast. There have been ones at Coasterstock, ones scheduled through Twitter or Snapchat, and ones from the KI Blog. One in May 2015 is the most special to me for two things that stood out: my husband, who doesn’t get to visit the park very often, was there too, and it is the only time I’ve gotten inside the helix. It happened that day that the group who showed for the weekday tour was fairly small, and the weather had been pleasant enough leading up to the day that there was not much mud. It was amazing just to be inside the helix but we also were allowed to stay and photograph while a train or two went through.

  28. H2Overdrive is one of my favorite KI Arcade games, besides Skeeball. H2Overdrive is a watercraft racing game that is really cool. One of the boats reminds me of Top Thrill Dragster, so I typically pick that one. Apparently, you can enter a pin to save your place for next time (as you can apparently upgrade your vehicle...), but I've never seen a PIN onscreen (I know there is a place to dial a PIN in, though). Unfortunately, it suffers from downtime, which is unfortunate. Funny enough, it was one of these downtimes that made intrigued to play the game as I could see its OS (Operating System) during start-up. It's located in Coney Arcade and actually contains 2 machines so you can race another person (I've actually never seen this happen, though, one reason being that one side may be down). Fun Fact: The game actually crashed/shut down on me while I was playing; it was actually kinda cool in a way! In addition to H2Overdrive, I enjoy Skeeball, Scrambler (a game where you hit a button to stop a light and wherever the light stops is how many points you get) and there was a time I enjoyed Guitar Hero in Beast Arcade.

  34. You are right, they are missing an opportunity to turn I-Street into an attraction all on their own. Replace all those shabby old trees with new palm trees, rife with coconuts. Begin your KI Best Day with a sprint down I-Street dodging coconuts that fall from the trees from a height entirely possible to hospitalize you!

  37. Have you been around the Cincinnati area during Oktoberfest season, including the biggest one outside of Germany? That German flare is everywhere. I say go for it.
    1 point
  38. I don't think that's going to happen. Honestly, I feel like the people of the area were far more connected with their German ancestry back in the 70's and 80's. I'm on board with what you're saying, but I just don't think it would make sense to put effort into it.

  39. I wish they would've kept the German stuff in the Festhaus that was at Winterfest and have it permanent. Also, is the 4 way for Skyline Chili onion or bean? I'm an onion guy and I hate beans.

  41. Looking at the bright side of the removal of the trees, at the very least we'll have better views of the fountain as well as the fireworks show. I'm hoping that they'll put umbrellas in the tables to replace the trees, as shade is definitely a necessary thing in the middle of summer.
    1 point
  42. I'm sad about the removal of all the full grown trees. There won't be any shade any more at any of the tables (assuming there will be tables) on the sides of the fountain. My guess is that they are aiming to improve the sight lines. The fountain will be a centerpiece no matter where you are on International Street. The nightly fireworks and light show will be fully visible from anywhere on the street as well.
