  1. I've never seen it officially confirmed that KI was given any sort of a "discount" for Vortex. Its long been a rumor, and could be true, but I personally have never seen it substantiated. If anyone has printed material or quotes from park officials, I'd love to see it. I think the reason KI chose to go with Arrow was likely multi-tiered. - KI specifically wanted a high-thrill coaster with loops. Most of the other manufacturers proposals were deemed too tame. - Arrow had perfected the multi-inversion steel coaster by then. - I believe there had been a management change at Arrow since "The Bat" had been built, Ron Toomer was now in charge and he was well respected. - Arrow had a long-running, successful relationship with KI before The Bat. Many of the parks rides... Screamin Demon, KCKC, Enchanted Voyage boats (I believe) etc etc etc... were Arrow products. - The Arrow multi-loopers were things of beauty and awe. I would suspect park officials were sold on something that would look immense, be HIGHLY marketable, and be a noteworthy use of the land. Not to mention, IMO, it was the perfect "OOOOH AHHHHH replacement" following the embarrassing failure of The Bat. The installation of The Bat was, what I understand to be, a development agreement between Arrow and KI. Essentially, KI provided the land and funding for Arrow to flesh out their Suspended coaster concept. Both the park and Arrow knew it was a prototype, and would require "tweaking." However they obviously never expected the amount of issues and downtime it experienced. Finally, TMK, the relationship with Arrow never "soured." Again, I've heard that as a long-standing rumor, but never had it confirmed by anyone at the park. Did the park ever file lawsuit against Arrow? Essentially, "The Bat's" development was what I percieve to be the same situation that PGA entered with Vekoma to develop Stealth in the late 1990/early 2000's. Ultimately most of the operational consistency "kinks" were able to be worked out with Stealth... however it didn't suffer from as many severe engineering flaws that The Bat did. The Bat was ahead of its time, unfortunately. But ultimately the success of the suspended coasters and (IMO) inverted coasters that followed all have The Bat to thank.

  4. I wondered the same thing. I have never seen any official blueprints or renderings of the "proposed" coaster. So I think this layout is just a fan-based conception - nothing more.

  5. Why would you hire someone to build something if only a couple years earlier their product failed miserably. It's like you hire someone to build your house, it collapses so you then hire the same people to build another.

  7. I was looking at the updated models as well. Most if not all states are trending to much sooner peaks. Most of the peaks are looking to be much lower numbers as well. This will be a very important week for the numbers. Keep up the social distancing everyone!!!

  8. https://covid19.healthdata.org/ IMHE released their updated projections over the weekend. According to this, the US will peak in about a week, Ohio will peak in resources need in a couple of days, and deaths in 6 days. Hope they are right; there may be a Kings Island season after all, eventually.

  10. I hope we see something like this again. I doubt we'll ever be rid of the laser tag guns but if the concept and the characters could return in some capacity I'd be all for it

  14. And let's hope years from now that CF brass remember the reason why attendance sucked the year Orion opened and not use that data point on an attendance chart and say "look we built Orion and it didn't draw in the attendance we expected, so no more $30M thrill rides...cheap family rides for all...."

  15. You're correct on Enchanted Voyage boats, plus the Turnpike, Antique Cars, Gulliver's Rub-a-Dub, Kings Mill Log Flume, and even the parking lot trams. Arrow built a lot of the original Kings Island... and a lot of most 1970's amusement parks. Regarding the original post, I'm very curious where this supposed layout is coming from. Is CoasterNation taking the one line description of the proposed roller coaster from Cincinnati Enquirer, assuming the ride was comparable to the later Windjammer, and then making a custom layout? Or is it based on any blueprints or old concept art? If not (and if it's just from the mind of the creator), it seems a little misleading in my opinion to say that a long lost coaster has been "rediscovered".

  16. Yes. Touchdown Jesus is what it's also known as.

  17. Because some times you get a big discount, which is what ended up happening. Same situation different model. The Bat failed. Kings Island got a discount on Vortex.

  18. I honestly hate that. I wish RFYLCB would be re-themed to its original theming and be returned to Rivertown because its definitely not a kiddie ride.

  19. Yes very interesting. There could have been two racing coasters at the park.

  20. I just watched my church service online yesterday and it was great; it actually brought a sense of normal-ness to it all as it was great to see the worship team and preacher that I would normally interact with most every Sunday And speaking of churches... https://www.daytondailynews.com/news/local/solid-rock-pastor-targets-reaction-church-services-during-sunday-sermon/15QyOacdLeAXnh7AyQ2KwK/ Just want to say that ultimately, I believe the Church is about the body of believers, not just the building (so what Solid Rock is doing is dangerous in this day and age). That being said, I understand some people will want to get back to normal, which includes being in-person at church, but we'll just have to wait it out. For now, online services will just have to do!

  21. It appears to be indicating that special precautions need to be taken if a evacuation is necessary and the last car stopped forward of that line. I'm guessing that is near the point of no return as the train begins to crest.

  22. They need to put the paper towels back in the restrooms that were updated and replaced with Dyson air dryers - those air dryers spread and blow more germs around (Not to mention blowing any airborne virus particles from sneezes and coughs everywhere) whereas the paper towels actually help remove any remaining germs on your hands https://www.theverge.com/2016/4/21/11479038/dyson-hand-dryer-hygiene-paper-towel-debate

  24. Also, when The Bat was built it was Arrow-Huss. Now the company split, and Arrow was at the reigns, it probably became a much more preferred working partner. I’d say if Huss was still in the picture, the outcome would have been very different.

  25. Other kings said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em! It sank into the swamp, so I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. I built a third one. It burned down, fell over, and then it sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up! Cant help but drop a reference.

  26. Not trying to sound paranoid or anything but these people literally want to kill me so I can no longer spend my money at Kings Island. So don’t try and tell me it is not on topic.

  27. You're just underestimating our outcast population...lol. I was born and raised a holy-roller. And church is online, as it should be. But yes, there are large groups of uneducated people. Some of them are going to get wiped out right now. I also believe there has to be a large % of them who are not going to show up at these places. But I mean, some folks would move to Guyana if "the right guy" told them that was safe...

  28. I hope you know that is not what the vast majority of middle-America plans to do. These are the outcast, fringe people. Even NYC has had to interfere with large funerals. Heck, crowds showed up to take pictures of the USS Comfort pulling into NY harbor---THE epicenter. Stupid is a global phenomenon.

  30. The only ride outside of a kiddy ride I never rode? Cuddle Up is the only one. If you want to count Shawnee Landing and Kenton's Cove Canoes but those were more attractions than rides. I've ridden everything that's been at the park.

  31. Link please. I want to be the next overnight trillionaire. I know some hospitals in NYC and here in Cbus that will pay top dollar. Don’t post it. PM me, I will give you a cut. On that note. I sure hope we can continue making payments on the payment plan if we choose. When I renewed the Canadian currency conversion rate was 1.3 now it is at 1.42

  32. true...but the park already has restrooms and I see how few actually hand wash after using the facility...yuck..maybe they would be more likely to take a quick squirt before entering a line? plus the restrooms with air dryers contribute to this as the toilets do not have lids

  34. I don't know what the temperature is down at Kings Island, but I got that feeling in my head of how nice it would be to ride a roller coaster right now. I guess I'm using my imagination.

  35. I think the answer is change your target customer base. They used to be very much a thrill oriented park, former launch capital of the world. However under Cedar Fair they've really focused more on the family's. They've invested heavily into their kids area and its now the largest Peanuts themed Kids area in the world. They still certainly cater to thrill seekers but I no longer think that is who they want their primary market to be, it seems they're more geared toward the family. Another major aspect, especially for southern parks is their water park. That is also a major draw for them id assume. BGW was historically the more family focused park until recent years, however it seems they're now targeting thrill seekers more. Overall I think the parks that perform very well are those that cater to families, just look at Kings Island

  36. I don’t really think we need that negativity. Here is a neat article about how the United States is giving aid to Americans through boats. I truly believe the United States Government will do whatever it takes to prevent deaths due to Covid-19.https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/03/27/us/california-hospital-ship-trnd/index.html

  37. That 2.5 million deaths number was if as a society we did nothing to combat it and just went about our lives as normal. What I am not sure about is what the 25k number is conditioned on. Lock down until vaccine? A few months? Nationwide, regionally or by state? The results of all these models always have assumptions so it is important to look at those. Doesn’t translate well to headlines.

  38. I don't have a source on this, but according to Bill Cunningham on 700 WLW, the english doctor (or perhaps researcher) who was often quoted about the 2.5 million american deaths has revised his expectations down to 25,000 deaths. That's quite a bit different. The next couple of weeks will tell a huge story. Does Ohio's wave come and pass? or does it continue to rise as they were predicting today until mid-may? Are any of the medications being tried/administered today show strong(er) signs of being a real solution. If the Z-pack and whatever the other drug is called combo works as some are claiming, and works significantly well with little set back, many things can get back to normal, Or if some other combo is found to work well. Since they say a vast majority of people don't even know they have it, and even less show serious signs of symptoms, the drugs would not be administered to many. I've still got hope that this summer isn't lost.

  40. I tried to look at the park hours for August, but it appears that info was taken down (along w/ the whole seasonal calendar). Typically, they go from full day operations to weekend operations around mid to late August, so lets say August 23 as the end of daily operations. If they don't open until August 1st, that would be 23 days of full day operation, 2 weekends of operations, then whatever weekends they added on thru and including Haunt. That is a very short window to recoup the cost it will take to train and hire the number of employees the park needs to operate. Additionally, I think it would be hard to hire the regular number of associates it normally hires, if you are a HS or college kid that is heading back to school in mid August, are you really going to bother with a job that you can only work for 2 weeks? Additionally, there will inevitably be a handful of days in that time frame that are virtual (if not literal) washouts due to inclement weather. There is also the risk, especially with a new coaster, that if they did open, they would be crushed in capacity in a short time frame, making for an unpleasant experience for guests. If they can't open up by mid June to early July, I'm afraid they won't open up at all until Halloween, if at all. There are a ton of logistics in the hiring and training of employees that be going on right now. That in and of itself will be a difficult task just to open up without everything being a complete #$%& show.
