  1. Seeing Scooby Doo at another park is like seeing an old girlfriend with someone else

  3. Here is my proposal: The park should require guests to wear masks at all times, but they should have areas like Tower Gardens and other seating areas designated as “break areas” where guests can sit down, take off their masks, and take a breather. As soon as guests leave these “mask-free” areas, they should then be required to put their masks back on.

  7. As an employee, I'm worried about enforcing those rules. Especially with how some people can be when told to follow rules. Tbh idk if I see the mask requirement lasting more than this season. I could actually see it not be too bad for the first few weeks of opening, but once we get later in the season, people may start getting tired of the mask policy and start taking them off anyway.

  8. I'm more worried about the safety of employees who have to police these requirements. People be crazy

  10. Get ready for the complaints to pour in from people that bought the season long FL if they are not available this year (although they were extended into next year to keep them "whole") I can already see people saying they will not go to the park if their FL pass isn't available... Parks have been put into an almost impossible situation this year - no matter what they do, a good chunk of their base is going to be ticked with whatever requirements the park develops to open. We have people saying the will not go if they do not make masks a requirement, and others are saying they will not go if they make masks a requirement, as well as those that have implied they plan to do whatever they want once inside the park as they will not enforce whatever policy they have, and those that will not attend because they do not believe the park will enforce their own rules... At the end of the day, there will still be a big enough demand from whichever group that plans to visit the park to make it worth the parks investment to open...

  11. The mask situation has become interesting just based on my local observations as various business continue to open up. Two weeks ago, 95% of everyone I saw had on a mask. A week ago, roughly half. In the last few days, I have rarely seen anyone in a mask in a store or restaurant, except for employees that are required to wear them, and most of them have been sporting the trendy "chin masks".

  12. That Scooby Doo picture is awesome! If this were an earlier time (like the 70's or the 90's), I could totally picture a Scooby Doo themed PSA with lines like this: "Like, social distancing, man" -Shaggy "Rah, Rocial Distancing!" (Yeah, Social Distancing!) - Scooby "Hey gang, we need to split up; remember to keep 6 feet apart!" -Fred "Social Distancing helps limit the spread of Covid-19. Jenkies!" Velma -MDMC, who is having way too much fun with this idea!

  13. They got exactly what they wanted. The ability to open. Dewine was supposed to announce dates for amusement parks on Thursday but did not. If they didn't sue who knows when they were going to be able to open.

  14. ^ that article also shows this! I wonder if and how many locations KI would have for this?

  15. Where did I say I was staying home? I was pointing out that if people want to continue to go to the park, they better follow the requirements and not post to social media that if masks are required, they will "lose it" once inside. It really isn't that hard of concept - follow the rules and everything remains open. The government has and will shut places down for not following the requirements. I would like to enjoy my fun at the park as much as you, but sadly too many people feel the rules do not apply to them and ruin it for everyone...

  17. I agree! What a sad society commentary when someone is smoking in line and anyone (whether it be another guest, employee, or security) kindly reminds/informs them there is no smoking in line and they go off and say they will smoke wherever they please. I have seen altercations over this. No joke - last year at CP a dude was smoking a cigarette in the queue line at Magnum and was next to get on the ride and was literally blowing his smoke into the employee's face standing there and NOT A THING was said to the guest...I pointed it out to a super and they shrugged their shoulders. It comes down to training. And training probably is more safety oriented than park policy oriented. And management willing to stand behind and empower and reward employees for doing their job. Maybe it is their job to enforce it or maybe it is their job to inform the guest and call security for non-compliance, but most people do not like confrontation, especially a young teenager wanting to work in rides. Again there are exceptions and we have ride-ops on this forum that do a great job, but I have witnessed smoking in station and when reported to a ride op, they simply shrug their shoulders. I have also seen ride-ops from this forum going above and beyond and be walking to/from break and stop a guest to inform them about the smoking policy. Or even better, they are a guest in the park and bring it to the guests attention! But I have also seen security walk right past someone smoking and it was obvious they were smoking and do nothing or a guest points it out to them and nothing...enforcement is inconsistent at best. Security at KI can or will only do so much. Rarely have I seen them actually throw someone out of the park. If Diamondback calls for security because someone had their phone out, it usually follows the route of the security person tells them of the policy and they go about the rest of their day. If the guest gets unruly, that is when they may get tossed. Again always exceptions and your experience may vary, but that has been mine...

  18. I guess my question will be how strict is the mask policy? Will it be required just for queues or indoors? Or do they expect people to walk through the entire park with masks on at all times? Hopefully their policy when stated will be clear, as it'll decide where my dollars go this summer.

  19. Things can change, but according to this article, masks will be required both for patrons and employees and both Cedar Fair parks will open with a reduced number of guests. Another article posted a few pages back in this thread indicated that attendance would be capped initially at 20%, so that would be an attendance of roughly 13,000 to 15,000. According to posts on this thread, typical weekday is 23,000-29,000 guests, so this reduced capacity of 13,000-15,000 guests would be approaching half of say a typical Wednesday crowd. https://sanduskyregister.com/news/249128/dewine-husted-impressed-by-cedar-points-reopening-plan/

  20. You're welcome! The map that was included is how I remember all of the park's maps being up until around 2000 when they switched from brochures to the six-fold maps. Like I said, somewhere at my parents' house is treasure trove of those old map brochures. When I interviewed for my job at Guest Services, one of the questions was why do you want to work in Guest Services specifically. I told them that I'd been coming to the park for 30 years and have such a love for it, I wanted to share my knowledge and love with the guests. I also wanted to work there because it was in the A/C and I thought I'd have more of a chance to interface with Don, as I was really wanting to get into the media department. Also, here's another little treasure I have hanging in my basement. I can't believe it's been 18 years. I remember the day I got this poster so vividly. It was pouring down rain and my dad and I were sitting under an umbrella between what was then the glass blower shop and the soft serve pretzel stand.

  21. I would think the park would give priority for reservations to Passholders initially before selling daily tickets as some other parks have done. Consecutive Day reservations might be an issue, hopefully not, but I could see it.

  23. I've been thinking about that. Tower Gardens, obviously, would be a good place for an area like this. Maybe the walkway between the amusement park and the water park. Also, as I assume they won't be doing shows this year (I could be wrong), you could use International Showplace as a similar area. Also wonder about the feasibility of doing one-way walking paths in certain areas of the park, similar to what we see at grocery stores. Not possible everywhere, but in some areas where you have a divided midway (thinking International Street and much of Coney Mall), you could have one-way walking, which might help with social distancing and lower the need for masks in that area. I'm fine with wearing a mask; I have to wear one pretty much anywhere else, and I think it's going to be the new normal for a long time. But I know that, at least in Michigan, we're not required to wear masks if we're just out and about outside. It's inside when the masks are required, or in spaces where social distancing is difficult. So I wonder if there's flexibility to require masks in ride lines and indoors but to loosen the requirement when walking on the midways.

  25. That number is just the long term care facilities number. https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/dashboards/key-metrics/mortality According to this chart, 78% of all deaths in Ohio to coronavirus have been from people over the age of 70. If you take the number back to the 65+ number that I originally said, the percentage will increase again. That is just the stats. Again if you are under the age of 65 the risk of dying to coronavrius is minuscule.

  26. As of right now masks are up to the business not Dewine or a DR. There is no state law requiring you to wear a mask. Not saying I'm not going to but I agree it's kind of silly, especially since all these projections are far wrong. Wheres those 5k+ new cases everyday like they said? I mean your more likely to die from a car crash to or from the park than Covid so there's that. Don't see anyone freaking about driving though...

  30. Park capacity is right around 70k, the average weekday during the summer is between 22-25k with weekends being 30k and saturday being 35k. This is what I've seen on average and what I've posted on this site in the past.

  42. Gravity does the pulling through the magnets though. The only energy expended by Drop Tower is the winch motor pulling the gondola and release mechanism to the top and a negligible amount spent on the sensors and servo's to move restraints and the like. Everything else is done by the Earth. The motors add the potential energy, just like the lift hill of a coaster and physics takes over from there.

  43. Good news, they don't have to worry about it anymore, because they installed a different electrical grid.

  44. I imagine that modifying the controls for either ride would require additional cost from the manufacturer or control system providers to interlock them as well as additional state inspections. By making a phone call or providing a video camera to observe the other rides operation by passes all of this extra cost on the control system end since both rides still operate the same way as they were designed. It is just up to the operators to manage the dispatches.

  45. So many interesting infrastructure questions! I would think that using wifi (private or not) would not be very desirable for reliability reasons. I would think the park would have a lot of fiber optic cable running all over the place in order to support a number of different things at this point (phones, points-of-sale, security cameras, etc.).
    1 point
  46. I really doubt it would be that expensive to have a raspberry pi sensor that detects when the ride is running and what part of the cycle it's in since Drop Tower's is fixed. Then that just can go over the park's private wifi to FoF to another raspberry pi sensor. Even installing 3 of them for a failsafe wouldn't cost more than $100
    1 point
  47. While it wouldn't be *that* difficult to link the two ride systems in such a way, ultimately, a CCTV setup is easier and much cheaper to execute.

  48. They could just have a button in FoF's station that lights up when it's safe to launch. That's what I would do.

  49. I believe the reason that Drop Tower uses so much energy is because the magnetic brakes are rare earth magnets and are therefor always energized (you don't want to loose your breaks if the power goes out). Therefore the elevator mechanism has to have enough umf to pull the ride vehicle up thru the breaks. When you watch it cycle you will notice that the elevator speeds up once it clears the breaks. The Bat phone went away at some point and I believe it came back in one form or another (a phone or camera) when Banshee opened. It may be gone now but I'm not sure indicating that they may have updated the power distribution for that side of the park.

  50. Glad to see Kings Island share a clip related to Orion's station. I'm also glad they have not shared any POV videos or footage of anyone riding. It would just be so cruel right now. The info about Flight of Fear and Drop Tower sharing power is so interesting. I would not have pegged Drop Tower as a power hog considering it is a fairly slow lift to the top. I suppose the gondola is pretty heavy and it is a vertical lift.
