  2. This is going to be a long post, I plan on giving my thoughts on all of the giga coasters I have ridden, not just Orion. I was pretty confident Kings Island was going to install a giga coaster pretty early last year, and I already had a trip to Japan scheduled, so I made a plan which would take several trips to pull off. My goal was to ride all of the traditional lift giga coasters in one year, including Orion there are six. The idea being the 12 months would culminate in a ride on the newest and would be able to fairly rank all of them. One last comment on this post, I have been to several of these parks before, these are my overall thoughts on the rides not just a single trip. I am ignoring Red Force due to the ride basically being a Top Thrill Dragster/Kingda Ka style ride just with a different launch system which required it being shorter. I am also ignoring Superman Escape from Krypton, I have no idea how people consider it a strata coaster, the difference in height from the top of the track to the station is not 400+ ft. the tower was built over a downward slope to give it an extra 90 feet, on flat ground it would only be 328 ft tall. My plan fell apart just as it started, at Nagashima Spa Land. Steel Dragon 2000 was down the entire day, but I did get to ride the newest RMC, Hakugei. Steel Dragon 2000 looks impressive, it has this massive support structure, and at over 8,000 feet long is also easily the longest coaster on the planet. The length and its location work against it though. Wind has a cumulative effect, the longer the ride the more that it effects the overall speed, combined with being right on the ocean, the park has wind issues, which cause the ride to valley. What I experienced with Steel Dragon 2000 being down all day is actually pretty common. Currently this is my only trip to the park, so nothing about the actual ride experience, I do not think its fair to use a POV, or others reviews. Next I visited Cedar Point and took several trips on Millennium Force. Its the first coaster of this style, and it set expectations for what would follow. Its fast, and graceful. The location is amazing, and its going to be tough for any ride to top the view. If this coaster was in a barren field, I would likely have a radically different viewpoint. But its a classic and I love how re-ridable it is, I am happy to ride it over and over again and have done so at Coaster Mania. I followed this a few weeks later by a trip to both Kings Dominion and Canada's Wonderland. I305 is every bit as intense as others have described it in the past. That is both good and bad, its an incredible experience, but frankly its too powerful for the average rider. No matter how much some coaster enthusiasts might like this coaster, it was a mistake. The ride was a walk on, and yet the other big coasters in the park had hour plus waits, and its not simply due to capacity. Producing powerful G-forces is fine, but the length of time this ride sustains them was a poor design choice. The ride experience is short and it is the shortest of all the giga coasters but the intensity makes up for it, if it had been longer it could have easily been too long. Leviathan was the first of the B&M giga coasters. It feels like B&M was conservative in the rides design, and it is a return to the more graceful experience of Millennium Force. The wider trains with 4 across riders block a lot of the wind from riders in the center of the train, combined with just how smooth the coaster is it can often feel like your going much slower then you really are. The ride is short and it feels like it. The first time I went on Leviathan I remember hitting the brakes and thinking it was a weird choice to put a mid-course brake run on a giga, then I realized the ride was actually over and this was just how the brakes were designed. I was then incredibly disappointed in the ride. The drop is incredible but the rest of the design feels like your not actually doing anything, I have ridden all over the train but even still prefer to just go ride Behemoth. My plan for Fury 325 was not to finish off the year at Carowinds but it start 2020 there. I wanted to ride it several times a week or two before Kings Island opened so it was fresh in my mind before riding Orion. Sadly that was not possible this year. I have been to the park several times and have ridden it a good number of times, but its also been around 3 years since my last visit. When people ask me what my favorite coaster is, my answer has been Fury for several years. The ride is a fantastic mix of intensity, and speed, and is very re-ridable. I have had the pleasure of being at the park at the end of the night and have had employees let me sit in the seat and ride more then once in a row. Finally this leaves the point of this thread, Orion. I think the ride might actually have the best drop of all the giga coasters, its slightly closer to vertical then all of the others and I constantly was out of my seat the whole way down. The helix might also be the best of all the giga coasters. The start and finish of the ride are some of the best from any ride I have been on. The airtime is powerful and it generates strong positive g forces but does not try to hold them for unreasonable lengths of time. I really do think the ride produces more positive and negative g forces then Millennium Force, it cannot touch I305 in that aspect but I am actually happy about that. The ride is short, but most of whats there is fantastic, and at least I do not get the same feeling of where is the other half of the ride I get from Leviathan, but its still not as long as I would like. That is my biggest disappoint with the ride, it has the start and end of one of the greatest coasters in the world, and it just needed more filling. Another 1,000 - 1,500 ft of track with 2 or 3 more elements would have really elevated this. I have no idea how the second element after the drop on what is effectively an out and back design is the turn around. One thing I have been confused by is that the ride has a greater sense of speed in the middle of the train then the other B&M giga coasters. I have been wondering if that is due to having half the seats empty so you have less wind blocks in front of you, so this might change next year. Overall it is a good coaster, I do not think I consider it one of my top 10, but it is good. Night rides, cooler weather, a full train, and maybe some trees, could easily change some of my views. I was at the park on the 4th and I got to see it with the lighting and I will say its easily has the best theming of all the giga coasters. I did have fastlane and could have ridden it as many times as I wanted, and frankly I went on it six times, it could have been the heat, but I never felt a strong desire to hop back in line and ride it again. For anyone wondering why the lift hill is mostly silent without the noise of an anti-rollback, look to the right of where the contentious saw toothed track is located on the lift, you will find a metal fin sticking up. Whats happening is their is something like a magnetic eddy brake attached to the dog on the train. With the speed of the lift it basically lifts up the dog preventing it from impacting every step on the ratchet. Right at the top and the bottom of the lift the train is going slower and you can hear the familiar clacking sound. My personal overall ranking 1. Fury 325 2. Millennium Force 3. Orion 4. I305 5. Leviathan I am pretty sure Steel Dragon 2000 would be number 6 but not having ridden it yet its not fair to try to put it on my list. I rank them based on if the coasters were next to each other and both had zero wait which would I go ride, I do consider re-ridability to an extent, which is mostly why I305 drops so low. I think I might try to pull this off again in a few years, I do want to try out Steel Dragon 2000 sometime, and might as well hit the rest, it would be a fun way to spend a summer.

  4. Went yesterday and want to make sure and say how absolutely impressed I was with the employees. They were all friendly (considering the current state of things and the state of some of the GP). Kudo's to the staff. Everyone had a smile and seemed to be making the best of the situation. I am very impressed with both the staff and the training the management have done for a quick turn around start to the season. I couldn't have been more impressed. I saw employees enforcing the mask policies and felt very safe. Masks and Social Distancing were both heavily noticeable so thanks to the GP. It was easy to tell those that complain about having to wear masks either didn't show up, or wore them anyway. Either way they were definitely a small minority. The only thing I would suggest is using the International Showplace as a relax zone. (similar to what universal did with the Sinbad show area). This is of course assuming they are not going to have shows this year as they seem to have eluded to. Just seems like 1 or 2 more Relax Zones would be appreciated especially on a day like yesterday with 90 degree temperatures. Other than that had a fantastic day and am looking forward to going again Tuesday. Thanks again to the employees and management at KI. Your efforts and outward friendliness were notice and very much appreciated. I made sure to tell this to as many employees personally as I could, knowing that starting the 12 it will be a whole different ball game. Until then us pass holders really have no right to complain considering our passes were extended to the whole of next year. But I fear the non-pass holders won't be as understanding and hope they strongly consider and understand the current state of things at the park when they visit and don't take it out on the employees. If they do I hope the employees will find solace that those who complain are a minority (how ever vocal) and want them to know the majority of us appreciate the employees and their friendly, outwardly positive attitude is noticed and appreciated. If you feel the same I encourage everyone to greet employees with a "Thanks for Working 2020". And to upper management, I know money must be tight but I would hope these employees will be compensated likewise to their over and above performance. To all employees "Thanks for Working 2020" !

  5. We only got to ride once, the very last of the train cars. I feel it would of been far more enjoyable being on the front where we could see everything without someone infront of us. I always enjoyed backs of coasters like Mystic Timbers beast etc. but this coaster, I think is just like millennium force, it needs to be a front seat rider. I did experience a little blackout experience, but I experience this sometimes on the Backlot Stunt Coaster too in the rear. its a really pretty coaster, id trade this for Firehawk&Vortex everyday. What I hope for next is a maverick type coaster in Vortex spot fingers crossed. I will be looking into a fast pass type ownership in future though, standing in lines are terrible and now that I am a little older 29, I am tired of lines. seeing people walk right on every ride made me jealous. Lol worth the cost of admission right there. my gf and I enjoyed it very much. did upset me that a line jumper go his ticket before us and when I called him out, nothing happened.

  6. Kenban did a pretty good job of describing the gigas, although I think Leviathan is a little better than was mentioned. I think as a coaster type that the B&M mega model is the best in the world. Orion is definitely a worthy addition to that group. Others have done a good job with their element-by-element analysis of Orion so I'll skip that part. I've now ridden each of the North American B&M mega coasters except for Candymonium at Hershey. Overall I think Orion is an excellent ride. The ride is tremendously fun and, as others have mentioned, the ride uses its speed really well. The first drop was outstanding and every bit as good as the first drops on Fury and Leviathan. The speed hill was excellent and arguably the best element on the ride. I didn't get trimmed that much on the big airtime hill so the airtime there was pretty good. I thought the little hill after the helix might offer a nice pop of airtime and it definitely does. It's really well-designed! As it is Orion is in my personal top-10 (in descending order - Fury 325, Boulder Dash, Steel Vengeance, The Voyage, Orion, Mako, Millennium Force, Goliath (SFOG), Behemoth, Diamondback). I could make an argument that had Orion had another airtime hill or two that it would be as good as Fury. The difference between Fury and Orion is in that extra 1,300 feet of track. Orion is like eating at some really fine dining establishments. The stuff that's on the plate is really good; I just wish I felt a bit more full at the end of the meal. Make no mistake though. Orion is a destination ride and will be a high capacity crowd pleaser for years to come.

  7. Just my opinion. While I’m all for updating the entry area I think a coaster would ruin the I street area. I’m fine with a new coaster that’s runs in the area of Invertigo but anything over the entrance would be too much for Kings Island tbh.

  8. Agreed. I’m fact most companies (Cedar Fair included) have things such as social media policies as well as public relations policies that could result in termination for publicly disparaging the company. The thing the dude said on the scrambler probably isn’t termination worthy but it is incredibly unprofessional. I remember riding the train with a friend of mine who is a ranking official at another chain and their jaw about hit the floor when they heard someone from the train crew say, “Diamondback cost $22 million and that’s why drinks are so expensive here.” I remember them saying that it would have been that person’s last day with the company if they pulled that little joke at their park. Sad part is, it was said again. Every cycle. For several years. I do think the park has cycled through some of the worst employees when it comes to things like they with it dying down over the past 2 or so years.

  9. I adore the fact that enthusiast members of this website are actively going out of their way to get teenagers fired from their summer jobs because they’re offended by fanboy coaster statistics. Guys, it’s a roller coaster. In an amusement park. Just have fun and enjoy the fact that you can experience this new coaster installation in the midst of global chaos. It can always be worse. Sheesh.

  10. No but it was 8.95 and worth every penny. My wife and I are making a effort to spend more inside the park (we had 3 Shotgun Wedding IPA's between us. Hints of Vanilla bean aged in burbon barrells was fantastic) as our way of helping out in these trying times for the chain. CF could have easily just extended the passes and not the funpix, drink or meal plans but they led the industry by making a call to benefit all of the pass holders, even allowing people to buy this year and extending the passes to 2021. I hope others who can afford to do so will follow suit as I am impressed by the generosity of Cedar Fair in this regard. I don't see any other large chain doing this and they should be commended for their swift and early decision.

  11. That stuff I'm fine with. In 2018 CP built up a rivalry between Maverick and Steel Vengeance and it was fun to see the associates make playful jabs about the opposing ride When an associate is bashing the park's newest ride around guests however, it looks bad. The park didn't pay millions of dollars on a coaster to have it be negatively reviewed by it associates; especially around guests during work hours. If you have employees talking ill about the park around your guests, how do you think the guests will react?

  12. It baffles me how some employees blatantly criticize the company they work for while on the job. Most companies will fire employees if they talk ill about their company or product.

  15. Don's article noted that the management was surprised by the large size of the trains when they were delivered. Keep in mind that they were probably ordered in 1970, a year before either Busch Tampa or Six Flags over Mid-America opened in St. Louis. Nobody had ever seen a 5700# TE Crown before. The biggest parktrains the Taft/Coney people had seen were Disneyland (5/8 size models and small narrow gagers) and Six Flags over Texas (very small narrow gagers). Possibly they might have seen the 5/8 size trains built by Harpur of Six Flags over Georgia, the same size as Disneyland. Crown already had five lighter 4000# TE engines running at Legend City, Frontier Land, Six Gun, and Pioneer City, but likely the Taft/Coney people never visited those parks. Well, Crowns are definitely NOT scale models. They are the same size as a Baldwin 8-14C, only very slightly smaller than the Miami Valley Narrow Gage RR #2, an 8-18C that led the first train into Lebanon.

  16. Had a great lunch at about 1230 at Brewhouse before the crowds hit, excellent burger. Wife had the sliders. Tots too greasy as always but thats how i always feel about tots, not specific to KI. Added the spinach dip, it was excellent. Restroom was clean and hit the sanitizer on the side door exit. Second meal at Hanks, steak burrito for me and my wife had a Carnitas bowl. They gave us both a ton of guac, great value overall. A solid day. Kings Island has some of my favorite dining plan items, on par or better than CP and Knotts for top 3 in the chain.

  17. It's not an all or nothing proposition. For instance, I enjoy Millennium Force, and will not hesitate to ride it if the line is reasonable enough when at Cedar Point. However, for a variety of reasons, I do tend to prefer Fury 325. Similarly, one can enjoy Orion, but still wish it had XYZ elements from another ride. No shame in that. No need for trash talking, though.

  19. Well, after a long absence from here, I can say that I got to ride Orion! It was my 260th coaster ridden and it was a good choice. I went with a group of friends, including some who were there during the first riders event. I will give my review, element by element and my/friends thoughts on the ride. I got to ride it 4x, 2 in the back and 2x front. (3x left edge, 1x right edge) 1. Drop: Like every B&M giga, fantastic drop that felt like it went on forever. I must say though, the drop does not look like 85 degrees, looks more like 80 or so. 2. Banked turn: People call this a "wave turn" and well... it's not. It is a fun element but as expected, no sideways airtime at all. I did like that leaning/hanging feeling but I did not float out of my seat. 3. Turn around: No, this is not a reverse treble clef. You do get a ever so slight float out of your seat, but it's not super noticeable. Forces are okay but again nothing special. 4. Speed-hill: What a beaut. it gives strong flojector airtime, but not as strong as Leviathan's speed hill. I love how sustained it is though and is the highlight of the ride. 5. Airtime hill: Again, good and mildly strong airtime, but F*** that trim hit hard as hell on our rides. 6. Helix: Forceful at first, then meh. I like the headchoper at the end though. 7. Final turn: I was expecting a pop of air from the transition and I was right on this, it's like a smaller treble clef of Fury 325, great airtime. 8. Break run: Small pop of air, as expected into the brake run. Overall thoughts: Orion is a world class coaster, period. People who say it's trash are jealous. With that said, no it is not better than Fury 325, SteVe or even Leviathan. I know K.I fanboys like to hype things up (no offense) but to say it's better than Fury 325, steVe, or Leviathan is a stretch. I do prefer it over MF though. But coming off the ride and hearing people say that was pretty hilarious not gonna lie. I understand it's all hype but man, it reminds me of when Diamondback opened and it was "ejector on every hill, best coaster on earth" and it was a middle tier hyper. Anyways, I like the pacing, it's about 1 second longer than Levi (with the recent modifications, Levi is running much faster) and again, solid ride. Other thoughts: I was disappointed with the banked turn, even though I knew there wouldn't be airtime on it, just so much potential wasted there. Had it been in a straight line, there would have been airtime for sure. The speed hill was my highlight, although Leviathan gets an edge on it for stronger airtime + how you're also out of your seat while turning vs just straight. Airtime hill was great as well, but that trim hit way too hard. But if there's one thing I learned about B&M giga's. by next year the trim won't be as harsh. My friends thoughts: I was in a group of 6, but we split up in groups of 3. Others got more rides than me as well. They all agreed Orion is a fun world class coaster but in terms of the B&M giga's, Fury and Levi are better. One of my friends said Levi and Orion are a 1A/1B type ranking, others (including me) have a solid 1-2-3. Final score: I'd give Orion 8/10. Solid coaster, great fit for the park.

  21. Mr Helbig, My cat really wants to ride Orion...I told her they would not allow such a thing...she became indignant and said that there are no signs anywhere in the park prohibiting cats from riding the roller coasters...while I realise she's being unreasonable, she's not wrong...what should I tell her...I'm leaving for the park in 26 hours and she keeps glaring at me...

  23. Seeing the old Vortex plot empty was odd and a little sad. Seeing it empty also proved to me that a coaster and little else could go there as you can see how truly "un-flat" that plot is.

  24. I find the ride op spiels detract from the experience and prefer parks which just use prerecorded messages. Half of the ops have no idea how to speak into a microphone and its just a garbled mess which no one can understand anyways, if its recorded at least there is a chance someone will understand. Then you have the ones trying to make terrible jokes. My opinion is the only time they should be on the mic is when one of the prerecorded messages is not good enough. Let people enjoy the experience and listen to the screams of riders, and the rides, instead of inane chatter. I actually do not ride Zephyr because I do not want to put up with the annoying ride ops, its bad enough walking past the ride.

  25. The zones do seem to at least be evenly dispursed. We frequented Tower Gardens the most and didn't use the one near Planet Snoopy, thought they would have had a larger area for them. Security was definitely enforcing the mask wearing. Even a few times I saw Security catch up to people to tell them to put it back on their nose. We did see a yellow shirt yesterday that seemed to have the heat getting to them near the Action Zone restroom. Kinda concerning because there are not many employees in that area. Husband hung out for a few to make sure he didn't need a call made. We saw the EMS quite a few times throughout the day. Employees were all extremely positive and fun talking with, I don't know how many times daughter just wanted to give someone a hug because she's happy to be back. Alot of rides are using a dismissal procedure so everyone isn't exiting at once. After a couple times telling kid she just has to wait outside the exit gate when they dismiss her separate from us (she didn't want to lose us) it just seemed the routine for now and no big issue. The only negative we saw was someone cussing the Mystic Timbers line employees because they had a souvenir cup and didn't want to get a locker.

  27. It seems like everyone I see getting off really enjoyed it. The vast majority of people really love Orion, but there are some naysayers whose negativity outshines the many positive reviews. I really do feel like Orion is the perfect fit for Kings Island, and I really think B&M and Kings Island did a FANTASTIC job designing it!

  32. My wife, boys, and I had rows 7 and 8 this morning. Whoa buddy!!! That drop was great!! I have to stay that I enjoyed Orion more than Fury, not sure about Millennium Force. Gonna take a few more rides to decide. Honestly, I didn’t mind Orion being shorter than Fury. I would rather a ride be shorter and snappier than longer and meandering.

  34. The fact that they said that for many years always led me to believe management didn't care, until I read what you said. One time the train robbers at Knott's asked guests for money and one guy replied he didn't have any money. The robber replied "you're right, if you had any money you'd be at Disneyland." I thought that was pretty funny. The scambler thing is passable too just because ride ops and associates always try to set up a rivalry. I remember riding Mystic Timbers where an op said "enjoy Mystic Timbers, the best wooden coaster in the park" then when I went to ride The Beast later they were calling The Beast the "best woodie in the park." Rivalries are fine and in my opinion encourage guests to ride the other rides but I understand the unprofessionalism that people can see in that. Its when people flat out trash talk the new product that I have trouble understanding.

  35. Yeah, that's still line jumping. You can't hold the place in line for someone else. Now leaving to go to the restroom or get water is understandable in a potentially 4 hour line on 90+ days. But holding the place for someone who didn't wait the duration is a no-no

  39. Why are ride ops allowed to disparage other rides like that? I don’t get it. It seems like disparaging a new coaster would be a huge no-no. I don’t know, I guess I find that stuff, along with saying things like “Enjoy your day at Cedar Point”, childish and annoying. I understand having fun, but not at the expense of acting unprofessional. It is a business, after all.

  42. Had my first 3 rides on Orion today. First was just after open, back row. Trim crushed us on the big hill, but it was a great start overall. Second ride at 415pm was also back row, much better. Really impressed from start to finish. Final ride at about 830, front row. Fun, very fast. I do prefer Leviathan and certainly Fury's front row ride. I live about 90 minutes from Leviathan so we ride it a lot. Overall I think I rate Orion above Leviathan, but certainly not above Fury. Carowinds is still home to the King of the Gigas, but Orion is no slouch. Can't wait to (hopefully) get full train rides on it next year. The crew today was awesome, by the way. They were flying with dispatches on non-cleaning cycles, it was outstanding. Kudos to Don and the whole team for a great job with the entire ride experience. The theming is great, the coaster looks amazing and rides so well. Fantastic addition to the park IMO.

  43. I like your review, however, you need to remember that people can have different opinions. Some people including me found it better than expected and I know some people who found it underwhelming. It's all the matter of opinion. Just because some people have a certain opinion on it doesn't mean everyone else has to have the same opinion.

  45. Thing is, I actually wore my mask and my gf too. And like 70% of people didn’t even have theirs over their face just completely under Chin or off. I think me suffering and seeing them comfy made me irritable. I did call a guy out. I waited in line for my Orion pass, it turned down past the game area. We made it to the area with the swing coaster that goes in circles, turning into Flight of Fear and a guy hopped in front of us. i said hey dude you just cut, he said did I? When we got to the ticket handout guy I told the Guy he line jumped us, the girl handed him a ticket and walked off. made me so mad. I saw two smokers behind a bush as we was leaving, didn’t care at this point. Didn’t see any security to call them out. Doubt anything would of happened anyway.

  46. Masks are required at the parks right now. We have hashed out your argument multiple times and there is no need to do it again. At this point in time, if you don't want to wear a mask and think they are useless don't make your reservation. No one is forcing you to go to the park where it's required.
    2 points
  47. Those masks do not protect the wearer from any virus. Nobody has ever claimed that they do. If you think that the purpose of wearing a mask is to protect you, the wearer, then again, you are demonstrating that you've missed the entire point. They protect the other people around you. They can stop you from expelling droplets. They cannot stop you from touching a contaminated surface and then touching your face, thus, the warning on the box is accurate, but not relevant to the conversation that anybody is actually having. But do go on believing that they don't do anything. You might want to inform all the surgeons of the world that they've been doing their job incorrectly for several decades, though since medical professionals universally wear exactly that style of mask during their procedures.

  48. 1. Not ideal, but it really doesn't render the mask useless as the purpose of a mask is to reduce the travel of respiratory droplets. It doesn't cease being able to do that the instant it's touched. What happens when you touch your mask is that your hands may become contaminated, however, the moment you wash or sanitize your hands, it's effectively as if you never touched your mask at all. 2. Obviously that's not ideal, but it still effectively stops respiratory droplets that exit via the mouth in this situation, and becomes completely effective once again the instant it's placed back above the nose. For sure, doing this reduces a mask's effectiveness, but it doesn't reduce it to zero and it certainly doesn't reduce it permanently. Not even close. 3. This is only relevant for N95 masks, which are only meant to be used in contaminated environments and are meant to protect the wearer, not the individuals around them. Surgical-style or cloth masks are meant to protect others around you. If someone is out and about wearing an N95 mask, they are likely wearing it wrong anyway as they have to be properly fitted and by choosing to wear an N95 mask, they are also demonstrating that they missed the entire point of wearing a mask in public. The purpose of a mask is not to stop the virus from getting through but rather to stop the transmission of respiratory droplets. However, since the virus travels predominately via respiratory droplets, the end result is that stopping the transmission of the droplets almost entirely eliminates transmission of the virus.
