  1. It takes a lot of bulldozing and grading to build something like this, the original KI campground was pretty light on trees at first too, and for that matter so was the developed part of the park itself. Give it some time to grow back in.

  2. The murals on the rounding boards and on the central drum of the carousel were painted by Carole Lanter in 1969 when the ride was still at Coney Island. The restoration effort was supervised by Coney's special effects coordinator Dick Harsley and all 48 hand carved horses were repainted by Bill Tull. I attended the memorabilia sale at Coney Island on September 26, 2020 and purchased a photo of Carole Lanter repainting one of the murals during the restoration. You can also find this photo in the book "Cincinnati's Coney Island" by Charles Jacques Jr. Top: Carole Lanter painting one of the oil murals on the carousel rounding board in 1969. Bottom: The same mural at Kings Island photographed by me on October 11, 2020.

  4. They were painted by Carole Lanter. The fascinating thing is that KI’s carousel is not the first or oldest carousel in Cincy’s history. The oldest carousel can be found in Seattle.

  5. I am a huge fan of the grand carousel. As a lifetime KI gold pass member, I have many fond childhood memories on it. However, my favorite memory has to be spending my days nannying three kids who also happen to have KI passes (best gig ever), and our tradition was to start every day with them taking a carousel ride as I drank my morning coffee from the starbucks on IS (I was in charge of three children who weren't mine; I needed it). Today I really love seeing the carousel lit up at night, especially during Winterfest. Something that ha always interested me however was the paintings of landscapes on the carosel, anyone know anything about them? TIA

  6. The mods appreciate this as well. I see KI as a more relaxing laid back atmosphere over CP. It may be that I don't get to CP as much, and I can't get from Gatekeeper to Steel Vengeance like I can from Surf Dog to Orion.

  7. Love this topic! Really like seeing the friendly debate in the thread as well. Having been to both parks of course, I have to agree with the general consensus of this thread — CP is all about thrills and KI is about all-around experience. So depending on what you like, hard to say which park is “better.” I personally like the aesthetic and overall experience of Kings Island. Don’t get me wrong I love a good coaster, but KI has those (just not as big as CP), along with great food options, better themes, year-round events (usually) and just better vibes as you walk around the park. It had character. CP is too commercialized for me. However, CP is still an awesome park.

  8. I guess that depends on what you mean by "forest." The times I was at one of the fast food places, I saw nothing but Japansese Honeysuckle (considered a noxious weed), some dead ash trees (from the emerald ash borer) and osage orange and water maples. The last two are not desirable tree species. Of course this was just visible from the parking lots, I have no idea how much old growth forest was back there. While I agree that being surrounded on the front side by fast food and a warehouse is unfortunate, there is an opportunity to take a neglected property and enhance it and turn it into an asset. I would think this is something you can appreciate with your emphasis on design and attention to detail in previous posts.

  10. My pleasure! It was an exciting find.

  11. It is not really about being tired as it is about the time it consumes to navigate the park. I bet it takes @malem 6 to 8 minutes to get from the front to the back of CP. He can probably do the KI trip in about 3 minutes.

  13. So funny thing and I wonder if this happened to anyone else, one of the pieces that I didn't send to my bud had a misprint on the engraving. the year is 1020 instead of 2020 lol

  15. i have to stick up for Cedar Point a little here with theming and presentation. No doubt it's a straight up Amusement Park, but everything from the Main Midway train station to the back corner is pretty awesome, and includes 3 world class coasters. I love the Frontier Trail and Frontier Town, and the vibe around Dragster when it's running. 17 years later, it still draws crowds to watch it launch. Kings Island is beautiful and much more laid back as many have said, but CP is a beautiful place even when you aren't on the boardwalk between Breakers and Lake Erie. The Valravn walkway is also very nice IMO. They still need a lot of work on the Main Midway, but French Quarter Confections, the Legacy Brick plaza and the new Corral were steps in the right direction. The Arcade is an eyesore at this point, at least to me. Nothing beats International Street to me, but it's not like CP is ugly.

  16. I totally agree with this. There are countless paths and ways to travel the park and everything is centered (for the most part) around the Eiffel Tower. Additionally, I feel like the park infrastructure and supporting buildings are much better prepared than most other parks. Each owner has contributed and withdrawn different identities for the park, and while KI seemed to struggle for a bit, after Cedar Fair added some large scale investments, the park seems to have a rather diverse lineup (3 B&Ms, 2 Vekomas, 2 Arrows, 2 Premier Rides, 2 PTCs, a GCI, E&F Miller and an in-house designed and built). But nothing beats walking into International Street, the fountains, the lights, the orchestral music, the Eiffel Tower, and the coaster skyline looming in the distance. It's no Disneyland, but it's an atmosphere like no other. I could praise Mike Koontz all day, and while I do miss TR:TR and some Paramount (1st year) theming, they've done an amazing job keeping the park in great shape, it feels modern, yet also retains plenty of original charm.

  17. Train ops at CP this year were truly awful.

  18. I got an e-mail about this development (via the park's newsletter) and it sounds pretty cool. Even though I live close to the park, I feel like I'd stay here for a night or two similar to how I've done in the past at Great Wolf Lodge for the KIC meetup.

  19. I’m a collector...but that kind of flaw would devalue it for me...now maybe if they put the wrong coaster name on it I might be interested.

  20. I assume the building is most likely on the chopping block for a flat or something but I always wondered how a small, indoor-outdoor coaster like Mystery Mine would look.

  21. The park still does internal, employee-only, property auctions/sales. Not sure if they are annual, or season ending, but they do still happen.

  23. I like I305 and twisted timbers. I like the park cause everytime I have been there its been dead. BGW is known as the premier park in Virginia. BGW is a lot nicer park IMO. Better food, atmosphere, etc. It is more expensive to go to BGW. To make a direct comparison its like CP and Geauga lake when owned by six flags. The discount chain here is Cedar Fair.....

  24. I’m sure they wouldn’t manage it and have their name on it if they weren’t getting money out of the deal. I’d imagine they get a nice chunk of the profits.

  26. Don't put it off your list. It is a wonderful park as is. Out of the CF parks I have been to, my opinion is that it is the most beautiful of them all. It has great rides and a ton of charm--it reminded me of the "old KI" when I went.

  27. In terms of regional parks, the Premier Spaghetti Bowls. The compact layout and launch leads to quite an intense experience. I especially love the Flight of Fear Clones (my 2nd favorite KI coaster), the experience can't be found at many other non-Disney or Universal. I know the queue video can be a little corny, but I have a special place for this ride.

  28. One thing KI has an immediate advantage over CP is the presence of a stationary observation tower.

  30. I'd be very disappointed if they built a dive coaster. I don't think we need another B&M. However, a floorless or even a flyer would be the best B&M options imo.

  32. I had a feeling that one or both of those may have been taller. However, the omission of their height stats led me to infer that their terrain/elevation changes were more significant thus making the height more or less irrelevant. But upon further looking at them, I can see that they're a bit taller than I had thought.

  33. And not everything on this forum is about YOU - I was not referencing you - where did I say I was referencing you? I was simply pointing out how much CF spends in advertising since people seem to think they don't spend money marketing the park. But since you brought it up, do you know for a fact that CF doesn't spend any money on social media platforms to improve their reach or is that just a high school kid's experience based on your own free personal social media accounts? Take some of the advice @Oldschool75offered you earlier...

  34. it looks absolutely dreadful. That was a full forest of trees and they removed all of them. The location behind fast food restaurants is equally as awful. Why not just park in the Walmart parking lot? This cannot be advertised as a luxury resort when it is nothing but a glorified parking lot.
