  1. My primary role the last few years I was at Kings Island was managing all of the park’s social media channels, which included organic and paid content, writing and publishing blogs, and optimizing the key performance indicators. The park annually had industry-leading results the years I managed the digital content efforts. I made it a priority to try to at least “like” every comment so the person making the comment knew it was seen, but due time restraints I wasn’t able to always reply back with comments. I would have liked to have been a lot better in this area, but was still able to accrue industry-leading results for engagement. A lot of that high engagement was derived through storytelling. That’s what I enjoyed the most, both when I did PR and then social media, telling the park’s stories. I was hired in 2007 to do the PR for the park, and then took on social media as that was emerging in 2008 around the time construction on Diamondback began to take shape. By 2015, it had become two distinctive different jobs. In the summer of 2017, there was a marketing restructure and at the bigger parks in the chain, PR and social media (digital marketing) were split into two different jobs. I landed on the digital side, which allowed for me to expand my skill set. It was a great opportunity, which came at a time when traditional PR was changing and the printing press was no longer news outlets, but rather Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blogs to share your news and stories, because that’s where the people you were trying to market to were. When I did PR, I was always looking to make noise to keep top of mind awareness for the park. During my years riding The Racer in the 1980’s, I was fortunate to be around and learn from three of the best to ever do it (PR) in the amusement and theme park industry in Bill Mefford, Ruth Voss and Carolyn Boos. They were the three most influential people in my career and the reason I was able to have a successful 27-year PR career, including 11 seasons doing PR at Kings Island. Way too much information, but this is what my role was during my years at Kings Island.

  2. Kings Island Central came into existence in 2003. Dane Thomas, who started the website, just wanted a place to host pictures of the park. Kings Island Central quickly grew in popularity faster than anyone could have imagined. Over the years, Kings Island Central has grown exponentially and has become one of the very few dedicated fan and forum websites left in the industry. Kings Island Central continues to thrive even with the increased use of social media. Media Director Brad Perdue continues to keep Kings Island Central's content relevant. He keeps the main website updated by adding park history in real time and adding hundreds of photos every year to our vast collection of photo galleries. As Brad continued to add more photos, and the forums continued to grow, we started to max out our space on the current server. Brad ran the server out of space multiple times during the documentation of Adventure Port and the 2023 season. At that point, Brad and Matthew Middleton, the KIC Website Director, knew they had to do something to keep the website going. In late 2023, we started with a fresh web server and picked out a new theme to build out our main website. We have been working since then to rebuild the current website pages into the new website and give them a modern look. Our original graphic designer, Lee, also took our vision for the website and created the new logos. https://kicentral.com/ The Kings Island Central Admin Team hopes you enjoy the new website and find it easier to navigate and find the vast information contained on our website. 3. Took me a week or so to find the right words to post. Here goes... I had seen Don around the park prior to meeting him. Specifically. he'd come ride Beast when I was on crew and people would "whisper" about him being "The Racer Guy." I first officially met Don at the Son of Beast announcement media day waaaay back in spring of 1999. I was introduced to him, and Jeff Siebert at the exact same time. I still have the pic in my files. After I met him, I'd often see him at KI - specifically on media days - and I always marveled at his KI knowledge and stories. He always has had a reserved, quiet demeanor. But once I got to know him I realized what an really outgoing guy he is. I was ecstatic to find out that he was hired to oversee Marketing at KI and would carry the torch. (He was mentored by the great Ruth Voss - and always speaks endearingly of those lessons she taught.) Don obviously brought with him a vast amount of ability, knowledge and know-how, but also he had the key ingredient - a passion. Its getting more and more rare these days for a person in an executive level at any theme park to have the profound history, and love, that he has with/for KI. Don is the epitome of someone that completely understood the effect that a place like KI has on peoples lives. In 2017, it was Don who single-handedly got behind the idea of what was to become "Kings Island: A Photographic Journey." He was the project's biggest supporter and cheerleader, and without him it would have never happened. He made a dream come true, just by saying "Yes." For that I will be forever grateful. Although its very sad to know I wont see him in an official capacity at Kings Island, I also marvel at his tenure. He is to be congratulated on a very long-term, successful run. In an industry that tends to blow through marketing folks like water, its a testament to his ability and tenacity that he maintained the career at KI for so long. I am super excited to find out what his next chapter will be. Helbig 2.0. But I mostly look forward to taking many more spins around the park with my friend, "The Racer Guy." Fly birdie fly - thank you for carrying that torch bud.

  4. We will not turn this into a nitpick everything that Elizabeth does thread. It is time to move on from the past and look forward. The KIC admin have allowed the emotions of losings Don on the forums. Sometimes with a lot of hesitation because it can also snowball out of hand. Now that the position is filled, it's time to look forward. Calling out every little thing the Comms team does will not help the park, KIC, or the enthusiast community as a whole. Constructive criticism occasionally is fine. Elizabeth is now fresh into the field. We have seen her awesome video work while she was in her video role. (I know I have been impressed.) We can't hold the position she holds now (that was previously occupied by Don) to skew our views of her or her abilities. She totally deserves a chance by everyone in the enthusiast community to learn and grow into her new role. She is not going to walk into it and be perfect. No one will. Don had a lot of years to fine tune that role, along with working with the previous KI PR people all the way back to his Racer riding days. That is experience a college classroom can't give you. With all that said. I now want to formally welcome Elizabeth to her new position of digital marketing manager at Kings Island. KIC wishes you the best of luck in your new role. We look forward to watching you grow your career at Kings Island and in the industry.

  5. This thread has been going for 4 months now. For a while the park implement some of the ideas posted here. We thought this was a beneficial thread for its members and the park. As time has gone by, it has just become a thread of nit picking. We have now beat this dead horse to a pulp. While I was making the videos that I have uploaded to YouTube the last 24 hours, I was adding the voice over of "Kings Island's ultimate fan site." I stopped and thought about that line. Has the site been living up to that mission? Have I lived up to my end of the the ultimate fan site mission? As I reflected (even on my own actions) I am not sure I can say yes to either one. I want to first apologize for not holding myself to the standard I want to maintain. In letting my emotions take over, I forgot to let in my intellect to balance out my thinking. Yes, we are emotionally attached to the place we all love. We can sometimes forget that it is a business and they are going to make decisions that we won't understand. Staying in that emotional state does not allow us to enjoy the park or the forums. To that end, I am going to lock this thread. It is time to look forward, enjoy the park and continue to make memories and talk about the place we love.

  7. All right, spoilers ahead. Unfortunately, AE went down as we were getting into the station for our second ride and we had to split. So I only got one ride in. I’ll give my best overview for those interested, though I may have some of the details skewed. Photo dump. You’ve been warned!

  8. With or without a willingness by the park to work with Tower Topics, the show goes on and the podcast will continue to grow. We appreciate everyone who has taken time out of their day to listen. We’ll have more episodes talking about Camp Snoopy in the weeks and months ahead.

  9. Camp Snoopy is new for 2024. What efforts has the park made to ignite interest, excitement, and anticipation since the August announcement? There's a lack of news stories, social media buzz, and blog features about the new ride, about Camp Snoopy, and all there will be for families to do. Why didn't the Kings Island communications team capture a momentous occasion -- the groundbreaking for Camp Snoopy -- by photographing General Manager Mike Koontz alongside Snoopy and Charlie Brown, all sporting hard hats and holding shovels, and subsequently share this captivating image with the Associated Press? By capturing that photo, and including a cutline such as, "Snoopy, Kings Island's EVP/GM Mike Koontz, and Charlie Brown make history at the groundbreaking ceremony for Camp Snoopy at Kings Island Amusement Park in Mason, Ohio. The park's award-winning kids' area is set to unveil this exciting addition in spring 2024," they could have secured extensive earned media coverage across news outlets spanning Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and beyond. Nobody at the park or corporate team is going to notice missed opportunities like this because people outside of PR can't really judge how well a PR person is doing because they're so out of the scope. Camp Snoopy is geared for storytelling. Hoping to see some stories soon across all communication channels!

  10. @BoddaH1994, I do not know you personally, but coming from someone who is a casual fan of Kings Island and rollercoasters, all of your posts as of late seem to have one purpose: to go at the park and constantly say negative things about their PR or operations. ON this site, we often voice our frustrations to certain users who always come to the parks aide (even when times they shouldnt), I see no difference with what you are doing here. I see your posts as forcing a narrative on the people on this website to try to prove a point. That being said, you have every right to voice your own opinions, but at some point, it does come off as beating a dead horse. I do not know what your end goals are here. It seems that you are much more upset about this than anyone else (including Don). I mean no ill will towards you at all, I just wanted to voice how your posts over the past few months have brought quite the negative outlook on the park.

  13. This is probably an unpopular view, but it's a shame they couldn't have found a way to incorporate this ride without tearing out all those trees along the north side of the flume there. Those trees allowed for some suspension of the reality of being in an amusement park while riding, making it seem like a voyage through the woods. It's especially ironic given the transformation of the area into Camp Snoopy.

  14. Sounds like someone just put out an old tombstone/decoration where the coloring on the name had deteriorated. I don't think there's a whole conspiracy afoot here. Probably some seasonal employee grabbed it from the storage area, threw it on a truck, set it out with a bunch of others, and then went about their day.

  16. THIS!!!! This how you do a ride. Just these queue pics make me so happy. Is it a HUGE expense? no, not really, but does it make a huge impact? TOTALLY. It is so on theme, on narrative and well done on a pretty basic budget, that I expect this all the time now guys. YOU CAN DO IT!!! (well, hiring JRA didnt hurt LOL). Mystic, Orion and now this have proven there is a new focus in this company of doing things that engage on all levels. I don't see "just" a record breaker coaster coming in a long time - if ever to this park. I see a combining of stats with story (Orion) or filling a demographic niche (family coaster) with a story-rich experience (Adventure Express). I also think the approach of taking essentially "off the shelf" flats and integrating them into existing, or developing new "park lore" with supporting themed infrastructure is working very well these days.

  20. Analysis: Micro section- I’ve said it before that I think the chain is going to push more micro sections with KI and this further proves my point. Instead of overhauling an entire area, they’re choosing to create something new as an add on; we saw this just this year with Adventure Port and Oktoberfest and we might see more of it in the future elsewhere. Vekoma- I’m impressed that we’re going back to Vekoma. Many enthusiasts have wanted to see more of this manufacturer in the states and now that Cedar Fair has a new styled Vekoma it could be a sign of more things to come. The coaster itself- 75ft high! Wow! I know that most of the riders won’t reach that height with it being a shuttle coaster but visually it’s going to be an eye catcher. For a visual scale comparison, 75ft is taller that Backlot Stunt Coaster and Adventure Express. I know with it being a shuttle coaster that capacity will be on the lower side but for being in the kids area, I don’t think it’ll be a big issue. The playground- I think it’s cool to give kids something to do that doesn’t require them to wait in line. This will be a good way for the parents to sit down and relax for a second while the little ones burn off some energy. Overall thoughts- this is what the park needs in my opinion. Cedar Fair had yet to contribute a coaster of their own to the kids area and now they have! I don’t know if this will win us back the “World’s Best Kids Area” because I’m not sure if the Golden Ticket Awards would combine both sections or not; frankly it doesn’t matter if we don’t win it back, this area is a breath of fresh air regardless. Also, I think it’s cool that Flying Ace will get a repaint to match the area.

  21. This is stretching it extremely far to the point where it just comes off as a personal attack. A roller coaster that features water forms a rainbow, that’s a unique thing to post about. This just comes off as nitpicking and personal bias all round.

  23. While eating some pancakes this morning at a restaurant in Pigeon Forge, I wrote a construction update based on the information the Kings Island Team has been willing to share with park fans. “While the Soap Box Racers are gearing up for action, we’re thrilled to share the latest on the makeover happening around the new Camp Snoopy-themed kids’ area. Drumroll, please! This spring, we say hello to Woodstock’s Air Rail, formerly known as Flying Ace Aerial Chase. Picture this: Woodstock’s in charge of delivering all the important Camp Snoopy mail, and the roller coaster is getting a nature-inspired facelift to fit the theme. Imagine a ride through a tree—the track is being painted green to represent leaves and the structure brown for the trunk and branches. It’s going to be a literal thrill for kids and their parents through the heart of nature! But what about the ride itself? Woodstock’s Air Rail, an inverted roller coaster by Vekoma (the same manufacturer for Soap Box Racers), will take you on a wild journey. The adventure kicks off with a 90-degree turn, then it’s off to conquer a double helix to the left. Hold on tight as you zoom under the lift hill and soar over the station like you could touch the sky with your feet. A couple more twists and turns later, and you’re coasting into the brakes and back into the station. Oh, and for those roller coaster enthusiasts who love details: it’s single train, 10 cars, with riders seated 2 across in a single row, making it a total joyride for 20 excited thrill-seekers. Our award-winning kids’ area just got a whole lot more exhilarating — Woodstock style! BTW — For those who like to keep track, Woodstock’s Air Rail is not a new credit.”

  27. And THIS right here is exactly why special events such as Pride Night are so special. It sickens me to hear this kind of garbage. I know this unfortunately exists everywhere but I really hate it when people simply can't just mind their business. We're all just out here trying to have fun, not be harassed and made to feel less than. And as for the more "family friendly" Haunt, I have a lot of feelings about this. Like most of you, I am truly not a fan of the watered-down Haunt we have today. Fear Fest is deep in my memory as an experience that was truly dark and had a real creepy feel to it. Long gone are those days it seems. I wish they felt they could keep it on high. Its not like there isn't a family friendly event during the day and its not like there aren't warnings about the event not being recommended for those under the age of 13. If your 5 year old gets the crap scared out of them and parent takes issue with the scare actors or the scenery/music/atmosphere that completely falls on them for having said child there in the first place. You don't get to be upset when you have been warned. And because of this the scare actors don't feel like they can turn up the heat and truly create a scary experience. Not to mention the No-Boo necklaces. If you wish not to get scared, don't come! That's like going to a rock concert and not wanting to listen to it because its too loud even though you know with it being a concert it will be loud so you ask the board operators to turn down the amps to a dull roar thus making the experience less immersive for everyone else. Maybe I sound too brash but I just want to see Haunt be what it used to be when it was Fear Fest.

  31. Coasterstock started in 2015 and in 2023 will be its 8th year (no event in 2020.) Since its conception by Don Helbig (Area Manager of Digital Marketing at Kings Island) has been the person to plan, schedule, and make this event a success. Don’s inspiration for Coasterstock is it is an opportunity to unite/reunite with other amusement and theme park fans, have great camaraderie, and come together as a big family. His inspiration has paid off, for the event sells out within minutes and has had attendees traveling from all 50 states since it started in 2015. Over the years, Don has gotten feedback from attendees to make the event even better at the next hosted Coasterstock. Now that Coasterstock has been established in the coaster enthusiast community, it has become the GOAT of coaster events. Don has made this 2-day event a non-stop schedule of exclusive ride time (ERT), behind-the-scenes photo and video opportunities, catered meals, guest speakers, and fun contests. Coasterstock is very well received and loved by all those that attend. Getting all of this organized is no simple task. The planning takes months. Don has to work with all the different departments from group sales for the shelter house, planning the menu with the food and beverage department, organizing the ERT with maintenance, schedule guest speakers. That is not the full list, just a handful of in-park organizing. Then there is ordering of shirts and materials, and working with IT to get the page and ticket sales up. You now get the picture of some of the planning that goes into making this event happen each year. Brad Perdue - Media Director for KICentral.com and Chris Hughes, owner from the Kings Island Season Passholders Page on Facebook honored Don for making this such and great event for the past 8 years during our lunch at Coasterstock. Brad Perdue presented Don with an extra-large card to show our gratitude and appreciation. He received a large round of applause from all of the attendees. Brad also brought markers so all attendees could sign the card to show their thanks to Don Helbig. Don's dedication and commitment to Coasterstock make it a very welcoming and one of the most anticipated enthusiast events year after year. Thank you, Don, for all the hard work you put into making Coasterstock happen. We look forward to many more to come, and creating memories with our fellow enthusiasts. We all really appreciate it!

  32. Here are some updates from yesterday: Bamboo railings going up for Cargo Loco's entrance/queue. Also the water tower seen in the concept art in the queue has begun construction. Additional bamboo has been installed for Sol Spin's queue/entrance. Something worth noting is that speakers have been added to almost all the light posts across Adventure Port. You can see them if you zoom in on the below picture. Hopefully for an IMAScore soundtrack?? Or unthemed pop/jazz music. Not much in-between at Kings Island these days! Rockwork(?) in front of Sol Spin for a sign(?). Last week it was just a wire frame. There is a new, painted Mercado sign that was added to the building. The painted Enrique's sign has been added to the front facade. I think this sign looks really, really good. Hopefully they're able to stick a fake window on there like in the concept art but I'm just not sure how it would fit given the size/location of the sign. Additional painted detail work has been added to the Coca-Cola Freestyle building compared to last week. Who knows when it's going to open...but I would say that it's certainly encouraging to see that when it does, it will be detailed and high-quality, based on the progress I've seen so far!

  35. My wife and I went to Haunt a total of four times this year. While we had fun, I found myself missing the old Haunt more and more with every visit. It is not that Haunt is bad this year and I hesitate to say mediocre, but it feels like "less." There are less shows, less mazes, less atmosphere, less to do. I miss the heavy fog. I miss The Undertaker taunting us on mic near the front gate. I miss the hordes of scare actors that roamed the whole park rather than being confined to "scare zones." I miss when the whole park was a scare zone. And the music.. Look, I'm a metal guy but I don't want to hear generic hard rock at Haunt, I want Halloween, I want horror. And when all these elements came together -- being on the midway while navigating the thick fog and hearing Freddy's theme, not being able to tell if the person in front of you was a park guest or a scare actor until it was too late -- it was something special.

  40. I believe both Vortex and now Bat have similar problems, metal fatigue. Arrow Dynamics requires Non Destructive Testing annually. If you are a seasonal park with freezing temperatures the instructions say to do the testing towards the end of the off season. The requirement is 20% of high G areas and 5% of the rest, typically you rotate what you inspect so every few years you have hit everything. When multiple problems are found you expand your search, if those areas also show defects you do 100% inspection. Every defect you find has to be repaired. I suspect The Bat needed 100% inspection. The problem is at some point you’re fixing too many issues, the steel is just too worn out. You can fix the problems, and increase inspections throughout the year, but realistically the track just needs replaced. More often than not when a ride reaches this point the parks solution is to remove the ride. I believe this is what Kings Island really meant when they said Vortex had reached the end of its service life. To my knowledge Arrow never specified an end of life for their coasters. They specified where and how to test for defects. They also provided guidance on how to perform repairs. But from the documentation I have seen and read when a park states a ride has reached the end of its life, that is due to the park or chains standards not Arrows. The claim going around for The Bat is that the incident with the wheel last year caused more damage than was originally known or found at the time. It’s very possible this is wrong. No one is ever going to discuss issues like this publicly. Metal fatigue is an area where a park running all the trains all the time ends up hurting the coaster. The more days a year and hours in a day the park is open it does more damage. Cycles do matter on metal fatigue. So do the forces that the ride produces, those swinging cars might be fun, but they are not easy on the track. IF I am right, this likely would have only been found a few weeks ago.

  43. So I went to Friends and Family preview night and here's some things I'll mention: 1) Adventure Port is looking great so far. It is colored concrete while not pavers it looks better than the regular white concrete the area had before. There are pavers in a circle though where a giant fountain looking planter is in the center of it. 2) The VIP area was moved to the area next to the entrance to Viking Fury where the bar was. My friend and I think that is a temporary spot for now as over by the restrooms across from Enriques where the grass area was, there is currently a building going up where a wooden roof was being installed. My friend and I think that is where the VIP lounge could move to as it would have a nice viewing area of the parade and could be controlled climate which would help for like Winterfest and very hot days. It could just be a new stand though we'll just have to wait and see. 3) Grain and Grill is looking pretty good. Not sure if it is ready to open this weekend though. 4) They got the soundtrack playing in the Orion station again! 5) The most disappointing thing was that they are still playing the jazz from last year on I-street. Not gonna lie, I liked the jazz for the 50th last year, but I was really hoping they were going to go back to the old style classical music that they played pre 2020 as it really works well with the grand first impression of seeing the tower after entering the gate. Also it was great to run into @DonHelbig and chat for a bit. Really looking forward to Coasterstock this year!
