I haven’t seen this mentioned yet but KI did a wonderful job with retracking Racer and Beast this past offseason. On The Racer, the retracked the red side going from the split to the beginning of the final set of airtime hills. On The Beast, the retracked from the valley to the brake run.

The funny thing is, as others have mentioned and I’m sure as many other people have done, I also rode red (randomly) Racer this weekend while killing Orion ticket time and it was the first time I rode it in probably 10 years and it seemed a little more enjoyable than what I remembered before and now I know why! haha :D

I’m also bummed I skipped The Beast this weekend :\

  2. It looks like the weather forecast for Tuesday might be better now and the first half of Monday should be solid as well.

I was at the park this whole weekend and felt mask usage was like 99% by guests much to my shock! The few times I succumbed to briefly taking off my mask in off to the side areas due to the heat I was definitely the odd ball out!

Social distancing was weak though especially in high traffic areas like Area 72, but I also feel like that’s something we can have some control of ourselves.

Employee sanitization was also good including coaster trains although oddly I don’t think I ever saw Orion sanitized?? I think Orion was the only coaster I saw running all its trains as well.

I still give KI tons of credit for even being open especially since Ohio is a pretty strict state for COVID restrictions overall.

^ They’ve said they are adding operating days. It’ll be interesting to see where goes.

Definitely more days in August and September as well. Maybe the first two weekends in November?? There have been many nice early November weekends when I wished the park was open!

  4. As a kid/pre-teen I was a big fan of KC!! It felt like a real thrill ride that I'd read about at other parks which all seemed far away lol Sadly, it closed during my "dark years"  when I stopped going to parks and before I became an enthusiast. The stand up coaster at Canada's Wonderland (if it's still open?) was a good throwback for me though when I rode it several years ago ^_^ Great blog post and thanks for the trip down memory lane!! :D

  5. I want to read an actual TR about today! It was by far my 2nd favorite KI trip of the 09 season!! (behind my one trip with my g/f) I was very disappointed I couldn't go last Sunday (was out of town) after hearing how slow it was, but today was right up there and with better weather! (more sun) Maybe it was a little chilly, but with a jacket it was fine.

I only rode Diamondback (I did my obligatory swan song of last rides on my last trip 9/27) and it was so glorious having no seat assigning!!! :D From 10:50 am (DB opened late) to 3:15 I got in 22 rides, 8 front row and 14 back row all with breezing my way into the station without encountering a separator...it was like a regular amusement park experience for once!! ;) And guess what, never once was the station every 'crazy' or out of control, and not every GP'er ran to the first or last row and capacity was still great! (I mean, B&M's are capacity idiot proof like that)

Don't get me wrong, it was nice getting on DB in like 10 minutes by way of SRL on a busy July day like I did numerous times, and I was only ever denied a seat request once (out of 140 rides), but it wasn't always easy. So today it was just really nice going hours getting to enter a station the same way I do on virtually every other coaster there is. But it was funny hearing that DB ride count record holder lady saying Diamondback's station was the fullest she's ever seen it! (or in other words your average Tuesday on Racer!)

At 3:15 I was burned out and left, but I was glad this closing day was about as empty as the other's in recent years! :)

  6. Re: Food prices...

It's not like this is Sandusky or Jackson, NJ! You have multiple Larosa's and Skyline's all within a stone's throw from the Diamondback SRL outside the park. Or you have the Mason-Montgomery Gold Star, which is how I roll! (with a UDF as well right next door for a 24 oz. chocolate malt, with an extra scoop of Homemade Brand vanilla ice cream added of course! :D)

  7. Rows 5 and 6...why bother? <_<

Sorry, but my disdain for the seat assigning is well known. At least it wasn't super busy. But last year at this time the weekdays really started slowing down...for anyone watching the DB construction webcam last year could probably attest!

  8. ^Btw, I dunno how you're traveling, but 65 North around Merrillville, IN there is some major construction going on...as in, like, flaggers on an interstate letting cars go in bunches type major! So FYI...I've avoided Chicago all summer, but I know some people who have missed multiple innings of Cubs games due to the construction, and this is in Indiana, not the "Chicagoland" area.

  9. First off, awesome PTR!! I finally got to see it! I've been doing hella flying this summer, and your PTR's have been a sweet time passer for me!

Just a few personal comments...first, I'm sad I'm only (barely) in one of your pics! Second, I honestly think the better strategy was just to do the 2 hour nap and break after the lunch for queue optimization. Also, having stayed at all the major resorts this year, everything on property in my opinion is breathtakingly overrated while Breakers Express is very underrated. Lastly, as someone who pretty much only rides the 7 or so big one's at CP and not much else (I could never be Terpy's son with that mentality!!), I do get a kick out of seeing parts of CP I normally don't! I've said it before and I'll say it again, I just really dig the way you capture an amusement park from both a tourists' and enthusiasts' POV at the same time...mad skillz!!

  10. ^Count me as someone who's never gotten hit by a bug on TTD on over 100 rides...of course, the number of night time rides is probably barely double-digits, so maybe that's why, BUT I do have a lot of Kingda Ka night rides with 0 bug encounters (of course, maybe it's the Lake that's causing the bugs!, haha)

  11. I found Labor Day weekend 08 VERY enjoyable!! Saturday was typical "busy", but not "ludicrous speed"/Cleveland Clinic/overflow parking lot busy, just busy.

Then Sunday was mixed with either the night or day being busy, but the other part really not (the fact that my pristine memory has failed me on that sort of scares me). Then Monday was legitimately dead!! Like MF was a station wait, Maverick 30 minutes, and walk-on's all around.

The only reason I went last year was because I overheard someone at the Mason-Montgomery Lifetime Fitness say to someone else that the Put-in-Bay resort bookings Labor Day weekend were the worst in recent memory 2 weeks prior...green light there!

But then someone told me 07 at CP was similar. As I've really discovered this year, if you can do a 3 or 4 day CP trip, crowds don't even matter.
