  1. So you are saying that it had more to do with the brakes having too much stress on them rather than the way in which the track was designed. Considering that there were two left hills, I was informed that the motor would burn out before it reached the top. (The information came from a man who worked on The Bat) I did not know about the shock absorbers or the lay out of the track. I thought it had to do with the motor. It's a shame because over all it was a really interesting design. It would swing out SO far. It was a good ride, they just didn't have all of the kinks worked out yet. Too bad. I didn't know Arrow did Top Gun, that is cool. I wonder if there will ever be another hanging coaster........or if they will eventually become extinct. I hope not.
  2. Thanks Interpreter! In my opinion The Bat was much better. I wish you had a chance to ride it. I guess I was a lucky little girl. I loved the screamin demon and it makes me sad it wasn't taken care of, that really s#cks! And I love MacArthur Park. It's on my ipod nano. I still have that album too. Thanks again. Have a nice evening!
  3. Thank you for showing some of GL. I have never been there and it looked like a nice park. So sad. It always makes me sad to know that a park full of happy moments will eventually be deserted. Just like old pictures of Coney Island after 1971. Ki did come out of that, but desolate parks look so disheartening. I hope they can find good homes for those rides at GL. Thanks again for your photos!
  4. AAAAwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Adorable!!!!!!!!!!! Great pictures. I love that tiger! That is a GOOD looking tiger. If I was a tiger I would want a date! LOL Kidding aside, thanks for such wonderful moments captured in time!
  5. "I recall a yellow cotton dress foaming like a wave on the ground beneath your knees birds like tender babies in your hands and the old men playing Chinese checkers by the trees... MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark...all of the sweet green icing flowing down I don't think that I can take it cause it took so LONG to bake it and I'll never have that recipe again.......OOhhhhh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" LOL!!!!!!! I love that you quoted that song!!!!!!!!!!! Mr. Interpreter, I did want to ask you something... I recall you mentioning that you were at KI on opening day in 1972 (lucky) so I was thinking you probably have ridden new rides as they came along? If this is the case, do you think The Bat was a better ride than Top Gun? Was the Screamin Demon sold because it was unsafe or did KI just want to get rid of it? And finally, do you know why the Skylab disappeared? I never found this out. I am fond of your insight and I thought I could ask you and you would not think I was joking around.......aside from the Donna Summer song. I hope I did not offend you, it was not my intention. Thank you for any information that you may hold. Sincerely, Odette.
  6. That's great! I stuffed my Reeboks with toilet paper and paper towels too!!!!!!!! Good for you!!!!!!!!
  7. Awesome, I loved the Nick Parade so when I was a kid, I always watched it after I rode The Beastie. Memories..... WHAT!!! how do you know about the backward racer is not going to be backwards no more? Because of the possible "new" trains right? I would Guess so. You have to do SOMETHING with the GL Trains! But, If they Put G-Trains on The Racer, and Villain on The Beast, I will be P*SSD, God I love the PTC ones. I agree. The (PTC) are classic! John Allen created The Racer, he was a genius. They should not mess around with HISTORY. Have we not experienced enough of the bad ideas that Paramount threw at the "original rides" and us? I thought Ceder Fair might put back together what Paramount undid! Look I know we can't stay in the past forever and rides have to move with the newest tech, but why do they think The Racer is still standing? IT IS A CLASSIC, IT IS A BEAUTIFUL COASTER, IT HAS PTC TRAINS and when it became backward and forward it made history again. (I'm pretty sure that was listed in a book I have on history and firsts of roller coasters) The backward is my favorite. I love all different types of roller coasters, but I have to say The Racer is one of the best that I have experienced b/f. I love seeing the park and tracks when I go backward. I hope Mr. Interpreter is right. I want them to leave the PTC trains ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. I agree. A decent flat ride would be a nice addition to KI. Something that is similar to a flat ride that they may have had in the early 80's. The skylab, haily's comet, ferris wheel, etc. They need something like that, however more bold to fit the 21 century. Old tech and new tech must meet. Just my opinion even if it is odd. O.K..... I know Skylab was not an early 80's ride. I also know that Haily's comet came from Coney Island. (Sometimes I just get lost in my thoughts.....)

  10. Wow to be an employee during the 70's and 80's. It seems that they would have cool stories, however they probably have scary stories as well. Hhhhmmmmm..............?????????????
  11. I like your "Bat" picture. That's all I wanted to say.
  12. I love the that you are re-creating the Monorail. It was a shame that Paramount took it away. My Mom and I rode that together and I have never forgotten it. An animal was on the track so we had to stop for awhile. I don't recall what animal it was, however it took it's time getting off of the track. LOL. The animals always had that look as if they were thinking "and what are you looking at????" Aaawwwww, so cute. I loved those days of Kings Island. I can't wait to see your finished project!!!!!!
  13. These pictures are great! I'm glad your dad is a shutterbug, he captured a lot of history. I love the picture taken from the shake rattle and roll.
  14. In 1987 when Vortex was new my Mom and I waited about 20-25 min. I guess we got lucky. I think the longest I ever waited was when The Bat opened. The line was backed up all the way past where The Happy Days Diner is now. I believe that there was a"whack-a Bat" game there between shake -rattle and roll and the Happy days diner, but I don't remember what food place was there in 1981. Of course it wasn't the happy days diner then. Does anyone remember what food place was there? And does anyone remember the "Whack-a-bat??? When The Bat didn't work out they had the game whack-a-mole. I didn't understand where the bats went, of course I was 8 or 9 what did I know. The Bat died off and so did my whack-a bat. I thought the bats were cute and I loved the design on the trains of The Bat, because I loved bats. I think I was an odd child!!! LOL!!! I still love bats. Back to the subject at hand, I think my family and I waited maybe 3 hours for The Bat. So that was my longest wait, I think. I always wanted a bat as a pet after I saw a kid on David Letterman with one. He was really cute and pretty friendly. (The Bat, not the kid) I wanted a bat as a pet too! A vampire bat, I thought I could feed it my own blood and I would save money or rather save my parents some money on pet food. Hhmmm.......when I was a kid it didn't seem as werid as me writing this thought out and seeing it front of me right now. Hhmmm, maybe I should not post this. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. I think Corkscrew was built in the mid 70's. I read that in a roller coaster history book. Please don't take this as though I am correcting you, this is just what I read. So, I think that gives Vortex hope. I would hate for them to get rid of that ride, it's only twenty this year. It would be such a shame.
  16. Dear Shaggy, That is a great picture of The Racer! I miss those final bunny hops. I think they restrain too much on The Racer now. The air time I remember from the 80's while riding The Racer was phenomenal! I guess they thought it was not safe to have those old lap bars anymore. Aawww, the 70's & 80's @ KI were GOOD TIMES!!! Again, thanks for sharing the picture! ( I still enjoy it now, it's just a little different).
  17. Haha well double rides always happen to me but of course I live lik 5 min. away from Kings Island. Yep livin the good life. Dang familyguy you are lucky! 5 min. away! I'm maybe 25-30 min. away, not too terrible. By the way....who is your favorite character on Family Guy? I love that show. I think Herbert is pretty funny. I quote him way too much.
  18. Ah, yes. The good old days with the old queue filled, and the line still extended to the Eiffel Tower. Oh my gosh! The Beast lines went all the way back to the Eiffel Tower? You really are a dedicated coaster lover! Was this in 1979 or later ?

  20. It suprised me too, but they didn't seem to care at all. It was like we were invisible! Weird, but fun!
  21. Dear KIfan, Beautiful pictures! Thanks so much for sharing! I have never seen such a clear picture of an early 70"s photo like the one with The Racer in it.
  22. I have been going to KI for over twenty years now, and never have I experienced what I experienced this past Tuesday. It's not earth shattering, I have just NEVER had this happen. My boyfriend and I were on The Vortex (one of our favorites) and when we pulled back to the station there were not many people in line and no one was in line for the last car (our car). So we just sat there and looked around and I said "I guess we better get out" and the people in front of us said "If there is no one in line you can ride again." I have never done this at KI. I was afraid we might get in trouble but before I knew it the restraint locked and we were off. A double ride, dang that was fun. The 2nd thing that happened was that we went over to see how bad the line on dropzone was and to our astonishment there were two guys in line! Just two people before us. It was so strange seeing the que empty. The ride was great as always, but it does not turn around as it climbs like it used to. Can anyone explain this to me? I'm sure it has been talked about, I just haven't been on here for a little while. We had a great time, however I did miss riding Tomb Raider, I bought a TR shirt for 60% off though!!!! SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, I'm done being silly now. Everyone have a nice day and I would appreciate any information on the dropzone question. THANKS!!!!!! P.S Extreme Skyflier was $5 that was so cool!!!!
  23. I love your attitude! I need to think more like you.
  24. I thought I was one of the "elders" on this site. You've got a few years on me, but not much. Did you ride Screamin' Demon, The Bat, Zodiac and Bayern Curve? I probably spelled that wrong, sorry. I hope this does not sound like an insult, I just always see people listed as " I was born in 87" etc. It made me feel like a fossil. That was cool you were born just a year after the park opened. Gosh I miss those days of Snagglepuss and Quick-draw Mcgraw walking around the park. LOL!!!!!!!
  25. I know I'm probably a bit older than most of the people on this forum so that leaves me to talking about what KI looked like in the 70's and 80's. (PRE-Paramount). First of all the landscaping! From 1970-1971 they transplanted original trees, bushes and speciality plants from the original Coney Island. They chose the perfect place to plant them too...in Coney Island well, now coney mall I think. When The IJST was put in they ravaged that beautiful atmospere of tranquility. Paramount of course did this stunt just like most of the bad ideas that they came up with. There was a time when KI had thrill rides and also that magical moment where one could walk over to the area by Les Taxis and have a taste of what an older park might feel like. I think and (just my opinion by the way) that Paramount ruined that combination of old times and new times. It was a formula that worked. I know times change but did they have to wreck so much in the time PKI was there? I think CF needs a chance to clean the mess up and that will take a lot. At least I don't have to look at movie ads anymore. Paramount would constantly remind you that "by the way after you leave the park tonight, go see this movie or rent it on the drive back." Is it a movie theatre or an amusement park? The food is awful. I hope CF does something about that. There used to be a place on International Street where I could buy just a plain bagel. I'm a vegetarian and a plain bagel would suffice for the day. It was cheap too. I refuse to pack stuff up in my car, then leave the park to go eat when I paid so much to get in! LaRosas has been there for a long time and just because I don't like pizza doesn't mean I think that it's a bad idea. I have just noticed the prices. Yikes! I haven't noticed any rides that look un-kept. I'm no engineer, but I think if a ride was in bad shape that they would close it and fix it. I miss a lot of the rides that are gone now, but I realize after reading many opinions on this forum I am NOT alone. I had a pretty good time the last time I was there (June) I was glad to see that they did not tear down something else in order to put in Firehawk. That was refreshing, they used land that was un-occupied. Hopefully CF will only improve and enhance the park. At least everything says "Kings Island" on it. I like that!
