Vortex final destination was the former AK Steel (now Cliffs) in Middletown. A friend of mine works there and sent me this photo last fall.

I miss old advertisements like these. I honestly think park marketing was way better years ago.
I haven't seen this commercial in years! I love it! I hope someone will turn up the Adventure Express commercial from the same year. I remember it vividly and was terrified to ride the coaster for the first time after marketing really sold the theme in that early tv spot.

Here is my guess. This is going a lot of my gut feeling, but also in what I want/don't want to see (in other words, heavy bias).
- Racer will not be torn down
- New front gate and/or fountain rehab (fits what CF has done with CP, Carowinds and KD)
- New thrilling flat or dark ride
I totally agree. I think we will see the return of a water canal dark ride type attraction. The public has wanted it since the Enchanted Voyage was removed and the Lost River was a staple at Coney until it closed with the park in 71. I think there is a great public desire to see this happen! I have faith that Cedar Fair has made the right decisions for this park. They haven't disappointed me yet!

I'm not buying the story of The Racer being removed to make way for another attraction. This scenario simply doesn't coincide with the trends Cedar Fair has exhibited over the last 9 years since they purchased the park. I believe this is a well played marketing strategy to bring attention to the ride and give it some well deserved attention. If I were going to venture a guess I would say that the plan is to do a complete restoration, new trains and a return of the backward coaster. The announcement may also include a new haunt attraction - not some hyper or strata coaster! This is still a family park and there is rich history that plays into the planning and decisions for each new attraction. Removing The Racer and replacing with another steel coaster would be a terrible marketing decision that would only appeal to a niche crowd. Cedar Fair is well aware of this and I'm calling the bluff. I say this is well played and I can't wait to hear the announcement today! Otherwise, I won't be renewing my 2016 season pass

That original logo was used on the first Kings Island brochure (and various promotional items) that was handed out at Coney Island during its final season. Once the new Kings Island park opened the brochure was identical (Coney images used) but the logo was changed. I used to own both brochures but I'm not sure I still have them. I work in the commercial logo/branding design industry so this subject is of great interest.

I just came across a few reasonably priced mock-up display models that were used for introducing The Delirium and Face-Off attractions. These appear to be the hand assembled models used for publicity once the new ride addition was revealed and placed in the the front gate IR display area. I've collected items of a similar nature for years and I've never seen any of the mock-up ride models for sale. Check them out!

What a treasure! Your video, more than any others I've seen, truly captures what the park felt like in those earlier days. Seeing the park in this raw context is the way I remember it as a child. The footage of the Tumblebug was especially was a treat! I also love how this was able to capture the music and sounds of each area, where other videos that have turned up from the period have only been mute. Thank you once again for taking the time to edit and post these!

The first time I visited that store was the summer of 1990. I remember walking through pretty quickly and then going back to sit in the car with my dad while my mom browsed. Dad and I timed The Vortex cycles and began writing them down on a notepad. It's funny the things you remember from childhood
My family hadn't moved to that area just yet, and Kings Island was considered my families vacation spot that summer. We stopped (and attempted stops) by several local attractions including Fantasy Farm and Americana. My parents tried to talk my sister and I into going in to Fantasy Farm, but she and I complained to the point that they aborted the notion. Little did I know that I would acquire such an appreciation for these establishments in my adult life that I regret not participating in my youth. While on the subject of local attractions, does anyone remember the small outlet mall that was once located next to McDonalds (later converted into GE Consumer Credit)? That's another lost local attraction.-

I was lucky enough to visit Universal Studios Orlando back in the late 90's to catch a glimpse of that building.
Really glad I got to do it after reading this.
Same here. I took a vacation with friends the summer of 97, prior to my senior year of high school, and visited Nickelodeon Studios for the first and only time. We actually witnessed filming taking place that day, but for the life of me I cannot remember which shows those were. Below is a video of Adamthewoo shooting a video of the interior.

The sections of track moved all over the park after the coaster was dismantled. I was still an employee of the park two separate seasons after the ride was taken down and recall the first dumping spot being at the junkyard in front of KI University. In fact, I had a meeting for my marketing orientation that concluded with me talking with one of the trainers about KC. He pointed out several sections that made up the loop in this particular dumping spot. I believe the parts they salvaged then ended up inside Flight of Fear (sometime between 04-07?) for several years and then moved down to the junkyard area behind Firehawk (07-08). I snapped this photo before the trains were removed from the park in 2008, but there were no track pieces present. I was between teaching contracts that summer and took a warehouse job at the park the summer of 08 and had access to nearly every area. Ride maintenance took me and a buddy inside Flight of Fear and no items from KC were still kept inside. I had heard that some of the items were stored in the "spaghetti bowl" and he explained that they were all taken out and used for parts at other parks. Aside from the trains, which were said to be transported to KD at the end of the 08 season, all other items of the ride were removed from the park by that point.

I thought this was a neat find and one that many here would appreciate. A friend of mine set up a dealer booth this past weekend at the Cincinnati Comic Expo and someone brought in these two old KI parking signs. I considered purchasing one, but they are massive. He may still have then, so if anyone is interested, contact me and I will hook you up with the seller. Enjoy!
