I don’t think it isn’t popular, I just don’t think it’s right for us. If they had a whole park themed to Batman: The Animated Series- I’d be there. The modern DC films just don’t seem to be getting any footing and I think that can hurt a brand like Six Flags/ Cedar Fair. I’m not a fan of established IPs in parks anyway unless it’s in a kids area, I favor originality.

That’s a different argument and one I can understand. The person I was replying to was implying (the way I read it) that it hasn’t been popular in a long time.

I personally think parks need some IP. Would I love to see HB back? Yes but that’s not realistic. Looney Tunes and DC would fit better in kid land than Peanuts (talk about dated).

but if you do IP well (and not just slap paint but done well think Original Top Gun) then I’m all for it.

Which Space Jam are we talking about? That newer one or the one I grew up with Michael Jordan in 1996.

As for the Big Three, I honestly didn't know who Wonder Woman was growing up, and I still don't know what her superpower is.

Batman took a dark turn since 1989, I mean that animated series that starts with a bank robbery in the intro was a show I didn't like much as a kid for its darkness. Superman has always seemed lame to be honest, this is in contrast to Spider-Man or the X-Men.

I mean seriously, Halloween was 2 nights ago, how many Batmen or Supermen showed up at your door, compared to how many Spider-Men. That should settle it right there.

The Lebron one. The one that is on HBO Max featuring video game characters.

as for the big three, you’ve got two cartoons out right now doing the cradle to adulthood (bat wheels and teen titans go).  You’ve got the new CW Superman show in it’s like 5th season. Plus movies (the super pet movie, the live actions, etc)

the conversation isn’t “is spiderman more popular”, he’s always been. But to say DC is not popular is arguing in bad faith. Just because you don’t watch doesn’t mean there isn’t shows out there.

  3. I mean Looney tunes has a newish show on HBO max (ended last fall?) and tiny tunes just came back on air plus my kids and their friends watched the heck out of space jam…. My kids are 10, 7, 3….  Are they as famous as they were? No.  But outside of the peanuts movie every now and then and the holiday specials my kids don’t seek out Peanuts …

also are we kidding on the DC ip?  Every kid knows the big 3

  4. I don’t want to be a wet blanket on this and I’m excited the kids area gets some love (having multiple kids 10 and under makes me living in that area a lot), but…..

my only negative is that this is the third coaster in that area with super limited capacity. Surf Dog, former Reptar, and this. While great family coasters to build up to bigger ones, I just wish they had added one with a bit more “people” eating capabilities.

but also how great that the kids area will have 4 great coasters for kids to build and learn there riding on

  5. The Jim Hill podcasts really broke down the cost and the issues with this hotel recently. Basically too expensive for die hard Star Wars fans to do twice and not luxuries enough for the rich to do twice.  Which then meant a lot of folks never wanted to repeat the adventure.

the hotel was small (100 rooms) and the staff/story was huge. This means the cost was going to be very high.

with the 300 million tax cut they’re going to get for depreciation this year, I don’t expect anything to come if it for a few years

When Top Gun was built, the monorail was still in service. It's not just a matter of being the same layout as CW, they had to work around the monorail track and station.

I thought I was losing my mind as the only one who remembered this.
wasn’t this designed with the idea of going around the Animal Park. That’s why it’s so far away from the main pad.

The park has only been open for 3 days.  Let's temper the expectations and prognostications of any ride removal.

I do f find it interesting, that the rides we currently have problems with and the inoperable rides are all from the Paramount era. Delerium gives great service but when it's down it's down for a bit usually. Drop Tower is prone to getting struck by lightning and probably has sensitive electronics and is from Intamin. Action theater or whatever it was called has been down since 2012 I think. And then there's tales from the crypt.  Seems like the junkyard coaster is about the most reliable thing that Paramount did.

Ehhhh this was designed by the previous owners and Paramount just slapped the name on.

I've been under the impression that Vortex's demise wasn't known until sometime during the final season, maybe even as late as the end of the summer season. I'm not saying this is the case with Bat, but it's still concerning.

Hopefully it's a mechanical issue like the lift motor or other equipment that just needs to be replaced, and they don't have the needed parts or equipment in yet. Bad case of that in Action Zone right now if it's a matter of waiting for parts work.

Did the park ever say why Vortex came down?

If that is indeed what happened (sliding out through the (larger than intended) gap, a seat belt between the legs to connect the harness to the seat would theoretically be the needed positive stop (albeit uncomfortably and assuming it does not fail).

Ever since my ride on Falcon's Fury I've wondered why the abrupt "untilting" before the brakes.  Now I wonder if that was intentional (as a redundant safety measure) to prevent this type of accident.

When you think about it, on KI Drop Tower or similar, there should never be any force to eject a rider even if the harness is at a higher angle. Hitting the brakes at the tilted angle introduces a new design consideration.  I know very little about ride testing, but it's hard to believe this was not caught during testing.

All theory at this point. But I wonder if testing would miss the off chance the OTSR are not fully down as they should or a very different shaped person riding etc.

A few years ago I rode Falcon's Fury (Intamin) at Busch Gardens.

It has a similar tilting feature.

Something I noticed while riding Falcon's Fury that right around (or possibly just before) the ride hits the magnetic brakes to decelerate,  the seats quickly tilt back upright. The result is that as the carriage slows (and your body does not), the forces slowing you down are felt through your bottom.  This seems logical, and felt comfortable.  In mechanical engineering, its called a "positive stop".

Watching video of the Icon Park FreeFall, it appears the seats stay tilted all the way past the brakes, to the bottom.  This would likely result in the positive downward forces to your body being felt at a more awkward angle, and if one's harness was high enough, there could be a gap large enough to slip through as the brakes slow down the carriage.  The molded part of the seat between your legs might help, but not necessarily.

Other differences: Falcon's Fury also has vest restraints, and "seat belts" to assure that the restraints are down far enough.  FreeFall has typical hard shoulder harnesses, and no "seat belts".

These are just my observations as I try to understand the mechanics of this tragedy. Hopefully design lessons will be learned so no other family will have to endure this horrible loss.

I went back to the video Online (whole video not just horrific accident). The ride op is saying it’s 430 feet tall and comes down at 75 MPH and then stops. At the end (after the accident) a lady comes running up saying are you sure you checked him, unsure if it’s to the worker or the other people on the ride. Just friggin horrific.

Also it looks like from your description that is what happened and just slipped out the bottom between the gap.

im a bigger guy and I wonder if the should restraints came down on me how much gap would be at the bottom.

The video is so incredibly disturbing that I initially thought it was a fake early this morning.

I cannot fathom what the family & witnesses are going through.

Same here. That’s how I found out

It seems like parts of our society has lost all empathy for their fellow “man”…why would anyone feel it was okay to share a video of someone’s death?

I can’t even begin to understand the pain that the boy’s family is going through.

I think it may be a bit of shock where your brain doesn’t know how to process the horrific thing you just saw and what to do.

  10. Holy smokes. Don’t watch the video (floating around the internet) what a terrible tragedy.

A video aired by NBC’s “Today” show Friday morning appears to show passengers on the ride discussing issues with a seat restraint Thursday night. The ride then began its trek up the tower before someone is later seen falling from the ride.

  11. Ha it would never work here because Americans in the last 60-80 years have not been asked to sacrifice for the greater good. Plus the greed and me me me culture that grew during the 80s….. you’d have people cry about freedom of something while waiting on Covid results.

  12. Weight restrictions on water slides are normal and is the typical way parks handle safety.  Even the biggest companies can get the design wrong and force tighter restrictions then originally planned.  The original design for Punga Racers at Universal Orlando’s Volcano Bay had a 150 lb restriction at one point due to injuries.  Since then the slides were rebuilt with a new manufacturer which allowed the park to raise the weight restriction to 300 lbs.
Unfortunately since weight determines who can ride safely if a park wants or even needs to enforce these restrictions, riders are stuck with scales.

I don’t disagree but they should be at the bottom of the slide and maybe not have big green and red lights letting everyone else know that you are too big….. safety is safety. But my guess would be the letting everyone else know is the problem?

  13. How is this any different than the test seats with green and red lights?
And one can know your weight before they leave the house, unlike knowing if you will fit in a test seat or not?
I guess we should get rid of the guess your weight game as well...

    don’t go hyperbole…..

But my guess is the test seats are not just for weight. It’s body size.

  14. Because the immunity from previous infection does not last. The last study I saw was 180 days of antibodies. Then you’re at risk just like the non-vaxed.

Also private business can ask for anything. If you don’t like it then that’s fine. My private college demanded our vaccination record because they didn’t want me being measles mumps or rubella on campus.

  15. I get where Coaster Salley is going.  Its certainly not legally the parents fault, but if it was me, that would be of little solace cause I'd still blame myself.

Personally, I've never really thought much about it, I always check my youngest kids seastbelts before doing my own, but that is mostly a function of just helping them get the mechanics down.  My oldest (13) I never check and trust me if it was learned that he was injured or killed because he thought it would be 'cool' to sit on top of the seat belt rather than be secure I'd be besides myself.  Similarly, without knowing the height requirements nor the height of the child, it is entirely possible that the kid was old enough to ride it without an adult, with perhaps an older brother or even by him/herself.  My 5 year old is tall enough to ride The Beast and Mystic Timbers by himself, but I wouldn't let that happen as I'd want to keep an eye on him.  However, I've let my then 9 year old ride The Racer by himself while I watched my then 1 year old in a stroller and my wife and middle daughter rode The scrambler together.  Again, I'd certainly be kicking myself if something had happened to my oldest on those occasions.

Blame is 100% on the ride ops, but the feeling of guilt will remain with both the ride ops and the parents for the rest of their lives.

I think you’ve said it better than I could ever do.

  16. Shark if you have children do you make sure they are secure before you are?  Especially a Drop Tower of 100 or so feet?
Most accidents is a multitude of of things that could be prevented.  I wouldn't sleep any better knowing it was the ops fault IMO.

I get what your saying as well. But the time to victim blame is never right. The park screwed up royally. I couldn’t sleep if any of my kids were hurt on a ride let alone were killed. Especially if I would replay the “what if I had done another check”.

But the blame is 1000% on the two ride ops. The death is on their hands. They are trained to keep the guests safe and they failed their jobs spectacularly….. it wouldn’t make me feel better but the blame is on the ride ops. They screwed up and should be held responsible just like the park.
