  1. Just to add, you can only do it online if you haven't renewed for 2020 yet, in which case you could simply renew as platinum and exchange your pass ID card on your first visit.

Otherwise, Guest Services at Carowinds should be able to upgrade your pass, but I would recommend getting there early to beat the crowd. If you're staying at one of the nearby hotels, you might choose to walk over instead of waiting on the parking lot to open. @pianoman did this a few years ago, but it took awhile for Guest Services to figure it out.

  2. ^^ China had the misfortune of being the first country with the new virus, and early misinformation within China likely hastened its spread. Some theories have pointed to the relatively high smoking rate and population density as contributing factors there. It's too early to say what the effects in the US or other countries it has spread to will be, but being concerned about the virus is a very good thing to the extent that its spread is slowed.

Being relatively young and without pre-existing conditions, my main concern is that I could spread it to others who might be at higher risk. Hopefully everyone is staying home (or at least wearing a mask) if they feel sick, washing their hands before touching their face, and following other best practices.

I am having a difficult time getting a reputable second source on this.   Ben Shapiro does not do journalism, he does propaganda.

Newsweek mentions that Israeli company; other pharmaceutical companies are also developing candidate vaccines.

  3. The footage that KI released of Orion testing is much better than anything that could be captured from Great Wolf, KI passenger drop-off, or the Sunoco station. The park has made general requests to enthusiasts over the years to avoid becoming the off-season park paparazzi.

  4. If historical trends continue, the dark ride will be due for a refresh in the coming years. Boo Blasters on Boo Hill will have outlived the original Enchanted Voyage to be the longest running ride theme in that building if it lasts into the 2022 anniversary season.

I would be really happy if they figured out how to use Phantom Theater's original score in a re-imagined dark ride.

I have a question. Will we walk by all season and look at the ravine, or will they put up a fence to block the ravaged area where the murder occurred? It would take a bunch if fence to hide the area.

I'd personally love to see a sign celebrating Vortex, similar to what Kings Dominion erected after Volcano was removed. The ride may be gone, but 33 seasons of memories will live on for a very long time.

  6. It's impossible to draw conclusions about how loud the ride will be based on the video. Camera mics adjust their sensitivity based on the audio level, so the volume of the video doesn't necessarily reflect the actual loudness. When comparing with Fury 325, consider that most of its course is far away from the midways.

Not to mention, this was the first test run, and adjustments have yet to be made.

Im pretty sure they filled the rails instead of the box beam on Orion, while on Fury 325 has the box beam filled instead of the rails.

Sand in the rails has to be added during fabrication so as to not compromise their integrity. This would have been done to Orion's track prior to delivery.

It's my understanding that sand added to the box beam has always been done after-the-fact for acoustic remediation.

  7. Indiana Beach released a statement, and the website has been updated with a permanently closed banner.

“Despite significant effort and a great deal of investment in infrastructure and rides, we have not seen an improvement in operating results. As such, we made the difficult decision to cease operations. This was not a decision entered into lightly. Team members are being assisted by their supervisors and the company is working to minimize impact to those affected. Guests may visit www.indianabeach.com for answers to commonly asked questions.”

Local media here in Indy report that the rides are being moved to their other remaining parks.  The stories also indicated that park was somewhat profitable, but not enough to continue putting the nec $ into maintenance or capex.

Here is the updated story from the Indy Star: https://www.indystar.com/story/news/2020/02/18/indiana-beach-amusement-park-closing-rides-being-dismantled-after-nearly-100-years/4799522002/

It doesn't make much sense that the rides are moving to other Apex-owned parks, given that they were listed for sale in Amusement Today. Also, I'm not sure how most of the rides would fit into Apex's surviving lineup of parks, which are waterparks and family entertainment centers rather than traditional amusement parks.

Apex-owned Fantasy Island near Niagara Falls had similar news today: https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/erie-county/grand-island/multiple-reports-say-fantasy-island-rides-are-being-sold/

  9. I have AT&T and rarely have issues at KI, even when the park is busy. Data can be hard to use if the park is near peak capacity or if everyone is trying to send video at once (eg. during a major coaster announcement).

I have had more phone issues at Cedar Point than at KI. AT&T data connections can be very unreliable there on a full-parking-lot day, but voice/SMS should still work.

Once T-Mobile and Sprint combine their networks, additional frequency bands available to each customer should improve coverage. In the long term, the ridiculous amount of spectrum available to the combined company should allow significantly improved capacity. At the moment, AT&T and Verizon have superior coverage thanks to having a cell tower inside the park.

In all my visits I only have had problems one Halloween Haunt evening about 3-4 years ago... never since. I have AT&T.

There was one evening in the fall a few years ago when AT&T had a nearly complete outage in the area. If I recall correctly, my phone was showing 'No Service' then.

  10. ^^ Weekends are generally more crowded than weekdays, but if you're going during spring break, all bets may be off. I'd recommend getting to BGW before park open on whichever day you go, hitting popular and low capacity attractions (eg. Tempesto, Invadr, and especially Verbolten) early. Pantheon remains to be seen, but I'd expect a long line to form quickly there.

Six Flags really discourages guests from buying tickets, in favor of memberships and season passes. I just checked, and they're not even selling single day tickets for the upcoming season yet. When they do, they typically cost approximately the same as a season pass, and they don't include parking (at $20-30 per visit).

If you think you will visit any Six Flags park again within the next 12 months, a monthly membership can make sense. Just be sure to read the membership terms carefully, especially regarding how to cancel. If you happen to be members of ACE, Six Flags has provided one free ticket to each member for the past few seasons. If you are ACE members, and Six Flags announces this offer before your trip, it's worth taking advantage of.

  11. ^^ Ha.

One of the nice things about that area is that the parks are close enough together that you don't have long drives between destinations. If you stay in the Richmond area, where hotels are reasonably priced, it's a very doable drive to both Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Kings Dominion. Both of these are fantastic parks to visit; BGW is one of my favorite parks of all time.

You might consider also visiting Six Flags America, especially if you have a Six Flags pass/membership. This is considered one of the lower tier Six Flags parks, so don't expect it to be like one of their premier parks like Six Flags Great America or Six Flags Great Adventure. Nevertheless, it can be a good way to spend a half day or so, especially if racking up coaster credits is one of the goals of your trip. Or Carowinds is 5 hours away, if you really want to make it a crazy drive.

Another area to consider if you want to do a lot of parks in a short period of time is eastern Pennsylvania. Hersheypark, Knoebels, Dorney Park, Six Flags Great Adventure, and more are within relatively close proximity. Here's a handy Google Map I often use when planning trips: https://www.ultimaterollercoaster.com/themeparks/map/

  12. The $118 is a renewal price for Gold; regular passes are the same price new or renewed. Buying a single, new gold pass will be a few dollars more than a regular pass.

The regular pass doesn't make sense for the vast majority of people when gold is available; it's primarily there to highlight how good of a value the gold pass is.
