How Do You Rate Dead Awakening?

Recommended Posts

Best show that the International Showplace has seen in years. Now if KI could only bring the Monsters Rock - Buried Alive to the Paramount Theater (good riddens to the awful baldini). the park would have the best entertainment of all time.

Are you talking about the Monsters of Rock -- Buried Alive from Cedar Point? No thanks. Granted it was MUCH better than Baldini, but it sill just wasn't a particularly good show. I say let Kevin Brunck write another show.

Well I have to agree that Dead Awakening is an awesome show!! As for the great baldini - the only one he is great to is himself. His tricks are not safe for his "helpers" as two of them were hurt the day I went to see that show. I would have gotten up and left but I am funny about being rude so we stayed there and endured it. I have not been back since and do not plan on it.

kevin is doing a great job with the other shows. This year Kings Island has had better shows than in any other year in a very long time.

This years singers/actors have been awesome! College kids with Music majors!! Great thinking Kevin - keep uo that great work!!

the absolute worst show i have ever seen. a total embarrassment to KI.

i seen dozens of people walk out right after the show started.

we stuck it out hoping it would get better. no such luck.

I'd have to agree with you....I found it embarrassing as well. I don't have a problem with others appreciating it, just not something I was comfortable watching with strangers. The content was similar to something that should be seen in the privacy of your home......

you asked for our opinions. i gave an honest answer. if you can't handle the truth, don't ask the questions. what does my opinion have to do with the gutter anyway. it was a show that's not even appropriate for the target audience.

Perhaps the best way these people could get their mind out of the gutter is not to visit what they believe to be inappropriate? Why, Ryan, do you think the park is warning parents about suggestive themes if they do not have concerns that some will perceive the show called Halloween Haunt in its entirety as being inappropriate for some?

With all due respect, I thought all opinion was welcome here, not just those that cheer on blindly what many think is a serious misstep by the park.

You will note that since a certain thread disappeared I had NOT posted a single nother word about Halloween Haunt and the unfortunate risque and inappropriate direction I believe it to be taking . But your "You need to get your mind out of the gutter" comment ended that, at least for now.

Remember, kwindshawne just the other night got the F word bombarded at her by other patrons, twice.

This is, in part, the new crowd that Kings Island is attracting. If that's okay by you, fine.

Originally, this very same word was part of this show. In a theme park. And now they should be surprised patrons are bandying it about at other patrons?

I am taking Haunt_Guy's advice. This type of thing is not okay with me, and I am not subsidizing it by my attendance. In fact, I have cancelled several planned visits to Kings Island over just this issue. And I am not the only one.

We went to see the show on opening weekend and ended up leaving a little more then half way through it. I really didn’t think it was the type of show the KI should have, but that is my opinion. I did notice that the following week as we walked by show, the leading lady did have more clothing on and the male lead was not shirtless. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that KI may have had some negative feedback about the lack of clothes on the young lady.

I usually have a hard time getting my family to go to the shows with me and after they sat through part of this one, it may be the last show I will ever see at KI, unless of course they bring back School of Rock. When that show was playing I had no problems getting the family to see that one. And before some of you blast me and remind me yet again that this is NOT an event for families or young kids, my family does not have young kids in it. They are teenagers.

They couldn't have made it more clear about the whole 'adult oriented' thing with Halloween Haunt, it was on PKI.com, on this site (thus in our 8 affiliate newspapers), in every press release and everywhere else you might hear about the Haunt. In fact, they even warn you AGAIN when announcing the show times for Dead Awakening.. as you hear the announcement (and thus are warned) you pass by ANOTHER sign outside of the venue warning you again. If you don't like Dead Awakening, then that's fine, but if you have a problem with the content, then... I don't know what to tell you... I mean, if you're not going to listen to countless newspapers, tons of announcements, and some huge signs, you're certainly not going to listen to me.

It was sexy, then they toned it down then the big wigs came in and decided that they were bringin' sexy back. Go CF! So yeah, she's skimpy again.

You make an interesting comment about park shows. People getting up and leaving is expected at these shows. It's not like when you walk out of a movie or a political speech in protest. It just takes one person in a group to want to leave for a group of 4 or 5 to get up and walk out. Not to mention that there is a LOT to do at HH, so asking people to sit for 30 minutes is kind of a lofty request.

Why will this be your last show? I can understand your thoughts about DA, but what about Endless Summer on Ice? Dora's Sing-a-Long? Twistin' to the 60s? Hot Island Rhythms? All of which were incredible shows. Were they really so below par to you that you don't want to give the ent department a chance next year?

I agree with you. The clientele that the park is attracting sure is a lot different than before I left Ohio. And I know what I am talking about...my job at KI puts me on the front line, and just this year I have noticed the public becoming more and more belligerent. It is not uncommon for me to get cussed at almost nightly now, and it gets old.

Ryan, I respect you..but pull your head out of the sand. Go watch a porn flick and see the similarities between DA and that..I mean, bondage, grinding and dirty dancing have nothing to do with scaring people-there is a different place for that. I know this is what sells...maybe I am just from a different era. But if KI promotes that type of filth, the clientele that comes through the gate is going to reflect that.

Believe me. I'm the FIRST one to criticize Kings Island, they've had plenty of stupid moves in the past few years. I'll even go as far to say that this years Haunt was unbelievable OVER hyped by the Park for what has actully been delivered. With that said.....

I've only seen the last 10 minutes of Dead Awakening and that was on opening night. I was VERY impressed with what I saw. After hearing initial reviews, I wanted to see the entire show but was told it was watered down by the second weekend. Now that I know its back to its original form, more or less, I'm gonna go see it first thing on Friday.

Personally, I applaud the Park for TRYING something that is edgier and more risque. Its this type of material and show that has been long standing at Knotts Berry Farm and Halloween Horror Nights at Universal. I think the big problem that Kings Island is going to face is our unfortunate location in the country. Lets face it....Cincinnati is far from being the most liberal city and neither are the people who live here. This type of material may work in LA or Orlando, but I don't think its going to fly here. People are way to sensitive and way to easy to offend. You can't please everyone, thats for sure. It just seems a tad unfair that to those who WOULD enjoy a show such as Dead Awakening to have to lose that chance because some others find it too offensive. Go check out the other Haunt attractions.

Like others have said though, it was made VERY clear that the event is ADULT oriented with very suggestive themes and material. How hard is that to comprehend? Perhaps Haunt really DOES need to become an 18+ event, if this is the material they are going to have. Again, kudos to KI for the show and kudos to CF for sticking to their guns and not buckling in the long run.

It's all about entertainment... if you take it for more than that, anything can be offensive.

Actually, the show has gone over very well. One thing that you'll notice about conservatives and conservative cities is that it's not a matter of stomping out things that are risque', but rather there's a time and place for different things. Some may feel as though KI, under any and all circumstances, is NOT the proper place for a show like that, while others have been warned and take it for what it's worth. People have made comments about how it's not family-friendly, but I don't think that could have been an honest mistake considering all of the signage and warnings.

Let me ask you this: why does it all have to be about the way the girl dresses? Why isn't anyone giving props to Kevin Brunck (who we will be hearing more from soon) for writing, producing, designing, conceptualizing, and choosing the soundtrack to the show? The fact that the show was written in-house is nothing short of amazing. Or let's talk about Adam Hayward, and how he was able to take a typically boring looking venue like the Showplace and transform it into an amazing rockshow-like feel with his incredible technical and lighting abilities, or the people who choreographed the show, or the endless list of talented performers who do the show every Friday and Saturday night five times. Personally, I'm not willing to look past all of that simply because the blond girl happens to wear something skimpy.

Delirium_Guy, as usual, has it right. Entertainment that is considered offensive by some will be judged in light of community standards. And that is exactly the issue. An age limit will not be enough to limit potential problems should that day come. Unless it can be said the work, taken as a whole, has serious scientific, literary, artistic or political values. Somehow, I doubt that is the case. It is just entertainment, so community standards would be the measure.

I will agree to that. They have a hell of a show on their hands from what I've seen.....much better than anything that played at the Park this summer. Now, I did not see the ice show, but come on......the rest of the entertainment was a joke, especially the Island Rhythm or whatever it was in front of the Eiffel Tower. Sheesh. Still, certain things will not fly. Despite you saying the show has gone over well, there were apparently enough complaints to justify changing certain things. They may have changed them back (which I give them major kudos for), but they DID change them. I do wish the Park the best of luck with turning Haunt into something that does rival the best of the best.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy Hot Island Rhythms, but that also went over rather well. I mean, what more could you expect out of a stage in the middle of I-Street? It's not like they could really integrate theatrics into it. Wouldn't surprise me if that was back next year. It drew some serious crowds for the evening shows.

Did someone REALLY compare this show to Porn? From what I saw from the video on Youtube, I would hardly call that Porn! It's certainly a PG-13 Show, but I think it's well written and has some good tracks in it. I'd love for my Home Park, Lagoon, here in Utah to do a show like that! Unfortunately, with all of the Conservative Mormons, we'll only get as racy as our Vampire Awakening. Kudos to Kings Island Live E! :D

No, it's not that. It's that I am the only girl in my family. I have 2 teenage boys and a husband that their idea of a good time is not sitting watching shows. We did see Endless Summer on Ice and I had to deal with the boys rolling their eyes for the entire show. My husband is better then the kids, but doesn't enjoy the singing and dancing nearly as much as I do. So when I say that this may be my last show, it is because unless I want to go and sit by myself and watch the show, I probably would not be able to drag any of them along. I really enjoy the shows, unfortunately I am only one in the family that does. They have been doing better but sometimes you have to choose your battles and this isn’t one I want to tackle.

Nope. Can't rate that one. what little I have seen on it is on you tube

ONe thing maybe no one has thought about..I had these two late teen maybe 20 year old males sitting next to me during this..and if you could have heard the derogatory and sexual comments they made about the girl on the bed, you may think differently...and I am sure if that had been my daughter in that and if they had continued, both of them would have been kissing the concrete....

Sit tight... that part of Kings Island is really only going to get better and better. I'm sorry they didn't like the Ice Show, but same argument goes for what I told Delirium_Guy about Hot Island.. the show went over VERY well. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see the hot sun of an endless summer again next year.

I found a lot of the girls in the ice show attractive, but it doesn't mean that I sat there and made comments about them. In fact, a lot of the KIC members got to meet them at KIC day and they can tell you that they're very kind and interesting people. My point is, don't blame the spectacle on the spectators. Granted, the show is sexy, clearly they were going for that. It doesn't mean that when Kevin wrote it he intended for the lady to be insulted. The costumes for Endless Summer were every bit as revealing as the ones for Dead Awakening, but since it's typical of ice skating, no one seemed to care or notice.

I don't want any of you to think that I don't respect or value your opinions, because I really do. I'm just trying to prove a point here. Going in this new direction they're walking a thin line between what some would call bad taste and what others would call progress. When in a situation like that, in someone's eyes, you will always fail. I have no doubt that a lot of people agree with the concerns that some of you are having, but I can assure you that the changes have been well-received and will likely continue. It comes down to understanding what that "adult content" warning means with Halloween Haunt (as opposed to what it did for FearFest). Some people may enjoy it, others may not. We can all agree that the vast majority of Halloween Haunt is innocent Halloween stuff that we've seen for years, so even if you want to avoid the adult themes, there is still a lot to do.

Wow what a hot topic.

First off I not only went to the Hot Island Rhythm shows and the twisting to the sixties shows - I made sure that I went to most of them each of my visits. Kevin and Adam did a great job. I am lucky enough to speak to Adam on a regular basis and have a great deal of respect for him and his awesome abilities. I also think that Kevin has done a fantastic job on the shows - I do not agree with every one of his decisions but as for the shows - yes he has a great deal of talent and did an awesome job!!

As for coastergirl hun we will have to see if we can get together on those shows because I enjoyed them and was often alone watching them. Somehow my Hot Island Rhythm friends did not let me feel too alone as they would sit in my area during the ice shows and surprised me on one of the shows. I had parked my scooter in the slot for it and sat in the middle section so as not to block the view of others. Well I heard someone shouting my name and looked over to see two full rows of young adults waving at me!! Yes it was the cast of the summer shows. I felt like the most special person on earth to have so many wonderful people that excited to see me!! They are not only talented people but they are also extremely nice and well mannered college kids. After that my 5pm ice shows I just stayed in that section as those great kids always sat there. To pay them back I video taped those summer shows and posted them on Youtube as FearFestKaren.

To put a name to the people you are making comments about. Natalie Gibson is the lady in skimpy clothes. She is not only one of the sweetiest people you could ever speak to but I am sure everyone can agree her talent is awesome. The "shirtless guy" is Josh Hobbs - another awesome and friendly person with a great deal of talent. The other two male singers are Tim Williams and Matt Kopec, both just as wonderful as Natalie and Josh. All of these great kids were preformers in all of the outdoor summer shows. Yes I was extremely fortunate getting to know most of them.

Yes on KIC day we did get to meet the Ice Show folks - all of them are extremely talented and most of them do ice shows for a living. One just barely missed the olympics. I felt their shows were breathtakingly wonderful. This summer was the best in entertainment I have seen in a very long time. But that is my opinion. They are not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

Now back to the Dead Awakening show comments. I totally agree with Boddah. The warnings were everywhere yet people went - ignoring them - and turn around and complained that the warnings were correct?? Kings Island had been announcing for literally MONTHS that Halloween Haunt is for mature audiences. If you speak to the kids that work haunt you will quickly discover the young kids really ruin things for not only them but others. Some children are fine as they are ok with it but others - and omg there was this couple that got on the Tombstone TerrorTory train - had the NERVE to tell the hosts to make sure that no one is to scare them and a manager had to go in the haunt with them to tell actors to leave them alone!!! Then the manager actually had the nerve to expect our group to go with them!! I told that manager that I would definately NOT that I had a target on my back and those kids were going to scare me without a doubt. I am very very well known in pretty much all of haunt and those awesome kids actually look for me and it is very rare for me to go to any attraction of haunt without hearing them calling my name and the scares are everywhere so yea I am a major fan of Halloween Haunt!! When you get to know so many of the people that work haunt you quickly find out they are really awesome people and they simply LOVE doing what they do!

If people do not want to see that show - with all of the warnings of the content - face it those warnings are very detailed in what you can expect - then do not go, It is as simple as that. But please do not go then leave half way through it and act as though you did not have any idea what to expect. That is hard on those kids preforming to see the audience leave like that plus it is very rude. DO your homework - read - then make an intelligent decision to go or not. If enough people do not go then you can believe Kings Island will remove it or never do that type of program again but please do not act as if you were not given sufficient warning.

As for the comment that it is something that you should watch at home. Well as much as I adore you hun and you know I do as we are personal friends, I have seen a lot worse on regular television shows and more sexual in nature than what I have seen on Dead Awakening.

Intrepretor - you are not making any futher visits to the park during haunt over the show dead awakening? What about the rest of the attractions of Haunt? Did nothing appeal to you? This is not an attack - I am genuinely curious as to your take on the rest of haunt?

I am going to make a comment I have made in other threads. Simply put when they call Kings Island a Family Park - they mean there is something for every one. I want to see adults ride those kiddie rides or see you take your younger children on the rollercoasters. So Kings Island gives you Nick or Treat for the younger families and Halloween Haunt for the older families. Not every attraction will be something you will like or want to do again. It is really the same with the Shows. Some like the rides and do only that - some like the shows and do only that - just put things in their proper perspective. Go to Haunt - do what you have fun doing and if Dead Awakening is not for you - hey do something else. I go to Haunt every single operating day and I have yet to run out of things to do - in reality we have had a hard time doing all of the things we want to do. So please, plan your trip and only do what is fun. Avoid what you consider offensive.

I do not find Dead Awakening offensive. I wonder why people did not find the show in Paramount offensive last year with all of those horror scenes - the same warning was given - it was full of gore and not something I would have taken my children to while they were young yet I saw a full crowd of kids there. I never heard anyone as outraged as they are with DA. I did hear parents read the warnings of the Paramount show and state - no this is too bad for our kids and simply went on to another attraction.

Give this some thought - anyone out there watch daytime soaps?? Wow they are in and out of bed, sleeping with their siblings husbands/boyfriends and all kinds of stuff. I quit watching soaps because that is all they did - there was no real story there. At least with Dead Awakening there IS a story to follow. The music flows beautifully with the story line. Lots of emotion is in those words that they sing and in some cases I feel they sing them better than the original recording artists. Yes they have changed things from the opening weekend. Thankfully I recorded the original weekend. They have since put the original show back together except for words to one song. Josh no longer uses the B***H word but yet they allowed him to sing the F**K word. Ok those original lyrics are broadcast over the radio every day in various songs. I am not hearing the uproar over what is on free ariwaves and I do not hear warnings broadcast before the songs are sung.

I guess I just think that things are being taken out of context. Warnings are ignored and what I feel is that people are complaining and I guess it seems to me like they did not bother to heed those warnings. I hope I am not offending anyone because it is not my intent - just voicing my own opinion here.

Boddah you are a great guy and if you see me at Haunt - I have a pic of KIC day for you. It was one I took of you, Don, Josh, and Dane. Made copies for everyone. - sorry off topic lol.
