Has anyone been to Wisconsin Dells?

Recommended Posts

I go to the Wisconsin Dells about every other year, but do not stay there...I usually stay in Madison (just as when I go to Six Flags Great Adventure, I normally stay in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey). I would never go to the Dells without going to Timber Falls Adventure Golf...and ride Avalanche! I think it is by far the best wooden coaster in Wisconsin. Second, for me, would be Cyclone at Mt. Olympus. Others adore Hades there, and that's their privilege! Don't let Pegasus's small size fool you. Zeus has good years and bad.

There are many great things to do in the Dells, too. The Wisconsin Opry is wonderful, there is a huge Indian gaming casino right beside it, and don't miss the wagons being drawn through gorges attraction at Lost Canyon, if that's your type of thing. They also have boat rides, the Ducks, etc. There are also HUGE antique malls, flea markets, craft shows, etc. There's also the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, the Circus World Museum, etc.

If you've been to Gatlinburg or the Jersey Shore, you have a very good idea what the atmosphere of the Wisconsin Dells is like.

You are also very near one of the country's finest small parks, Little Amerricka...

From what I have been told, the go kart tracks are better at the parks that don't have the roller coasters than the ones that do up there. I am told that Mt Olympus, in particular, has relatively boring and jam-packed tracks. Think about it....kids have parents who take them places....and they tell them "one stop at the roller coaster place and you can do the go-karts while we are there, or I will drop you off there and pick you up later...."

The other places HAVE to have superior tracks just to compete. I have watched many of them open and close. It's tough to be in the amusement business up there....lots and lots of competition!

I re-discovered the Dells last year after 15 years and was pleasantly impressed. Mt. Olympus (which has its own website with some great pictures) has several wooden coasters (Hades being my favorite for the underground part), several huge go-kart tracks (too bumpy for this old lady but the teens love them) and a waterpark with slides and a HUGE new wave pool. If I recall admission was around $35 and well worth it.

There are tons of other go-kart tracks and mini-golf courses and every kind of food. The Kalahari indoor water park is huge and was a great place to spend a frigid weekend last winter. The Mayflower was nice when we stayed there many years ago and it's located in the middle of everything. There is a Rodeway Inn and a Comfort Inn we stayed at last year, both nice and affordable.

The only drawback: if you forget something don't expect to be able to run out for it after about 8-9pm, everything closes. There is ONE 24-hour Mobil Mart that's hard to find.

Have a GREAT time!

Im from Wisconsin, and if you are going to the Dells here are some of my "must dos:"

-Noah's Ark-Is the largest waterpark in the world, and is full of amazing water rides. They have not one, not two, but three family raft rides (a normal one, a speed slide one, and a dark tube one,) two wavepools plus an activity pool, a lazy and adventure river and tons of slides. There website is here:http://www.noahsarkwaterpark.com/. But I cant say enough about this place, personally I think it even beats the Disney Parks and goes down as my #3 favorite waterpark (behind Schiltterbahn and Water Country USA.) And as for the comparisons to Mt. Olympus's water park, well they have a decent array (now that they added new slides and that wavepool) but the vast majority of their slides are old, old, old. But then again, they do have the coasters and the go kart track as well.

-The Original Wisconsin Ducks-Be careful there are two companies here, you want the Green and White Ducks (whos starting point is across the street from Mt. Olympus) because they are the first, and the only duck company who actually gives tours in the original Army ducks. Also they give you the best view of the Dells themselves, which is a good time.

-If you are going to stay at an indoor waterpark, then there are three to consider: Kalahari, Great Wolf Lodge and Wilderness. They are the biggest and the best, Ive never stayed at the Wilderness so I cant comment much further on that one but, if you have younger kids you want Great Wolf, otherwise you want Kalahari in my opinion.

Even though The Interpreter recommended not staying in the Dells, I actually got a pretty reasonable room at the American something or rather Inn. It was the hotel right next door to Riverview Park. It had an indoor pool and hot tub. Of course I was

there the last week of summer and it was bit of the off season I beleive. The area is gorgeous. Avalanche and Hades are 2 of

the finest wood coasters you will find anywhere. All of the parks are pretty much walking distance of each other, and there are

walking paths to get you to each park. If you like scenic train rides, there is one maybe a mile or 2 away from the parking lot of

Timberfalls that is really beautiful. It's a highly recommended destination vacation spot! Its like Pigeon Forge North. The same style

of atmosphere.

Actually, I am not recommending not staying in the Dells...I'm just saying that as is typical FOR ME, I stay some distance out....I find I get fewer rowdy enthusiastic rambunctious people up all night in the motel, I get lower prices, and I enjoy the short drive to the parks. I do this most everywhere I go, from Atlanta to L.A. to SFGAd. And yes, even when I go to Kings Island...I normally stay with friends in Northern Kentucky!
