Cedar Point to remove Disaster Transport & Space Spiral for B&M Wing

Recommended Posts

From the article linked to in the first post:

“We have several coasters that cover parking lots,” Ouimet wrote. “Not necessarily ideal, but certainly acceptable given tight site constraints and the amount of land such attractions require.”

Personally I don't think it's acceptable... At least do the favor of tearing it up and planting grass.

While visiting the local casino/ horsetrack to place a couple bets on the Derby, I noticed a large portion of the public walkway/ viewing area was formerly a parking lot- with parking lines clearly visable (the track was built a few years after the casino).

And the first thing I thought of was: where is the coaster?? :)

Honestly, it doesn't make much of a difference to me if the land is cleared for a non-usable grassy area or not.

I think it is okay to have a coaster that "goes over" the parking lot but not a coaster that has to have

supports in the parking lot. Invertigo goes out over the parking lot but not actually into it which is okay BUT.....

At Cedar Point which is the ultimate roller coaster destiantion in the United States I would excpect nothing but a roller coaster swooping over my

head as I get out of my car. At Kings Island, A roller coaster that actually goes through the parking lot would not be as normal but also kind of expected.

The announcement may be like a Diamondback annnouncement, where Cedar Fair won't say anything until they already started construction and if thats

the case then they will probably say "Disaster Transport and Space Spiral have been removed for further expansion"

It is really hard to tell if DT and SS will be going to the scrap-yard or being relocated but I think that Space Spiral has a better chance than DT because DT was not a very we'll liked coaster and may not be worth moving to another park unless it was moved somewhere like Michigan's Adventure, like said above......

King's Island still has a possibility of getting something new for 2013 but at this point I wouldn't count on finding out for a while. As Son of Beast's chances of surviving slowly fade away, Kings Island can start to rejoice because they can get something new in the place where the pile of wood called Son of Beast now sits.

A new coaster? New park area and further expansion into the tree's? An updated Son of Beast? I guess we will see....

If Kings Island would take down Son of Beast for a new coaster they have to start soon. Good thing I waited to go back to the point.

If that was the case they would definitively would have to have started already. But I dont see them tearing down SoB and building a coaster for 2013. Highly unlikely.

Gotta say, seems like SF is trying to up CF. Literally the day after CPs new coaster was leaked, SF announces their new coaster. Coaster wars? I think so.

Woah! Slow down cheetah!

This is an article from March 7th. B)

Ha, didn't see that. Well either way SFMM has been continually adding more and more coasters. I feel that they just want to have the most coasters. I guess they feel that quantity is better than quality.

Geez, how bad is Disaster Transport? Seems like everyone is okay with seeing it go. When I read about it, that was one of the more unique sounding rides at the park. I hope to get a chance to ride it.

When's the last time CF didn't leak their new ride?

I may be wrong but I recall CP doing an excellant job of keeping Top Thrll Dragster hush hush until its announcement around Christmas 2002. I can only speculate but I imagine managment was still very angry about Millenium Force losing its world record just 2 months later to Steel Dragon 2000 in Japan. ( I know coasters take years to plan but there must have been some kind of leak during the planning stage-it just seems too coincidental to me that, low and behold, Steel Dragon suddenly appeared on the scene to break Millenium's record.) Anyway, I guess it worked as Dragster held its record for two seasons.

Leviathan goes over the parking lot at Canada's Wonderland. When the ride comes close to the ground they made an "island" of grass and planted some trees.

I expect them to do something like that at Cedar Point.

I'm pretty excited for 2013 at CP I'll miss the space spiral for nostalgic reasons, its still not the same without the sound of Demon Drop, but I'm really happy to see DT go. Its a big ugly eye sore on the inside and outside that will hopefully be relocated without the building.

The only concern I have is the location.

Hopefully this http://i.imgur.com/9aBM2.jpg

Doesn't turn into this http://cache.rcdb.co...0fa11sg00bn.jpg

CP has really done a lot of nice landscaping in recent years but it is going to take a lot of work to make that back stage area look attractive.

And let's not forget Dominator at Kings Dominion is built on their parking lot as well. They tore that section up and planted grass too: http://rcdb.com/4079.htm?p=21309

As far as a name, I think Bride of Raptor would be kind of cute. Both rides apparently will be across from each other on the midway and, if the rumors are correct, both will have green track plus when I think of a winged coaster ( or whatever you call it.) I think of a bird like Raptor.

^That article states the new ride will be the longest in the park, not the longest of its kind as had been reported earlier. As much as I would love to see a 6600' wing-rider at the point next year, I think the Blade may have been a bit confused. That would more than double Wild Eagle's length (which would be fine by me, just no way I see that happening).

I'm one of the few who's actually had a pleasant ride on DISpatch mASTER TRANSPORT. Why, I do not know. My first ride was in 2010, so I assume that it was a lot better then than in 2011. I have no idea why, but it was such a unique experience that I will not soon forget.

It's not an awful ride at all. It's just an awkward experience and very, very dated. It's quite a testament to the old Cedar Fair's battle against themeing and embarrassingly short after the built up experience, but it's not a bad ride.
