Intimidator 305 Closed: Cable Lift Problems

Recommended Posts

If you add together all the amusement rides/coasters/transportation intamin has their downtime on a couple coasters is miniscule. The coasters with downtime are not cookie cutters. They had issues with hydraulic launches that accelerated riders over 120mph when first came out. A burned lift hill motor for a cable lift on a woodie after 7 years, and a part ror a 2nd generation giga coaster.

Rides that have been plagued with downtime are rides no other company could design or even attempt.

If intamin only designed chain lift, not intensive, and built cookie cutters than their uptime would be perfect and people would complain about how they are not innovative.

So what if they had to change a couple pieces of track on i305 & take out the heartline roll on maverick. They tried to push the envelope on intensity than to take the easy way out and design it as forceless as they could.

They have a patent on their cable lift but another company could design a variation.

Gyro towers similar to those listed below that were built prior to 1971 did not involve Intamin and therefore should not be listed here. Well-known rides such as Cedar Point's Space Spiral, AstroWorld's Astroneedle and Coney's Space Tower were built by Willy Bühler Space Towers Company of Berne, Switzerland with cabins by Von Roll. In 1971 Intamin started marketing these towers and contracted these same companies to build them. Willy Bühler Space Towers was eventually acquired by Von Roll.

My point is when you design more products than any other company and also more than a lot of other companies combined you are bound to have some issues.

I am a little confused, RCDB shows Intamin has 120 coasters and B &M has 90. So they only have 30 more coasters than B &M. I don't think anyone has issues with their other products (flats), they seem to be reliable rides. It seems you giving them an excuse for some of their failures!

The general public is not going to understand any more than: "The big ride is down and I paid a lot of money to get in here and ride it. Now I am upset and mad at the park."

I don't see them putting up signs saying: The manufacturer of this ride has pushed the limits of physics and mechanics to the best of their ability to bring you a high thrilling ride, but the sacrifice is that it does experience a lot of down time over other coasters." Thank You!

When I visit CP, I have expectations that I will not get to ride TTD for it not be operating. Every time I have been there the last few years it has broken down almost every time. I almost attended the Virginia is for Coaster Lovers event to ride I-305, well that would not have worked out well, hence the reason for this thread.

When I go to KI I never worry if DB is going to be down, I know it is a work horse and will most likely be up! I will take a working/reliable B&M over a extra thrilling may or may not be operating Intamin any day, but we are all different and I respect you for what you like!

In 2011...TTD had basically more downtime than uptime, and at least went down once per day be air leak, rollback, stuck fins, or other operational issues.

I went down mainly for weather, went down mechanical three times, one PLC issue, one semi serious issue, and one routine train maint that robbed us of one train for a week. We went down other times but very briefly to confirm a safety issue or check something, but nothing to the level of TTD...just saying

And my capacity was higher :)

Its your preogative if you would rather have a reliable ride that does not push the envelope over a ride that is incredible. Last several times at the park db has had downtime, so what its a machine. My limit is three times in a row till I am bored and want to go ride the great pumpkin with my daughter.

There is not a single coaster domestic or overseas that I would make a special trip to ride that is not an intamin.

Lets just agree to disagree.

If Mr O's goal is to provide "the best day of their year" anytime a family shows up to one of his parks, I'll assume having all of his major attractions operational, safe and running is part of that mission. Cut it any way you like, but bottom line, any ride that is standing, but not operational is bad for a park's image. When that ride is one of your major attractions and a reason people show up at the park (as opposed to say like a scrambler type ride where having it down on the day you get there may be a dissapointment, odds are you came to the park for much more than riding the scrambler) is down, its even worse.

Sacrafice reliability for innovation sounds great in a vacuum, but what happens when the lack of realiability happens on the day you're in the park? What if you have the option of going to a different major amusement park in the area, like say Bush Gardens Williamsburg if you had Kings Dominion as one of your stops on summer vacation? Thats a lose of business, that's a potential loss of repeat business from the same family that might decide to stop at the same park on this summer trip next year when they head to the beach again?

Put your roller coaster nerdom aside, the average park attendee has no clue who B & M is, or Intamin is, who Huss is, etc... They do however look at a ride like Diamondback and think, wow that thing is huge, I'm kind of nervous to get on it. However, when they came to the same park last year, they probably felt the same thing when looking at SOB, then felt a sense of dissapointment when they discovered it wasn't working, hasn't been working for years, and "just how reliable are these other rides if they can't get that thing working?" ideas placed in their heads? How many people have held back from a trip to Cedar Point because of the recent failure of Shoot the Rapids? how many have held back from theme parks in general b/c of the tragic incident in Texas? Reliability issues are not just an issue for a particular ride or the park it resides in, its an issue for the industry as a whole and something that needs to be considered when one is about to dump $25 + mil on their next major attraction.

If paramount would have built volcano here and they would have spent extra to have had a intamin plug and play for SOB, and if they would have installed a supes type hyper instead of tomb raider everyone on here would be singing intamins praise.

But that is my point, when Kings Island put in SOB, they put in a ride w/ even less reliability than your standard Intamin (or anyone for that matter). Not only did they spend a fortune to build it, and rework it, and then tear it down, SOB gave the park a lot of bad PR, it probably cost the park a fortune in potential business not only from its reputation, but also from the people who said "lets wait till next year, maybe SOB will be open and we can finally try it). the Crypt/TR:TR wasn't nearly the fiasco, but it definently had a less than ideal impact on the park. Toss in all the downtime for Firehawk, and is it any wonder that their last 2 installations have been from the company that currently sets the standard in reliability? The argument has never been that intamin rides are terrible, other than shoot the rapids, most of their recent, "local" installations have been popular. I'll assume KI knows it can get relatively the same amount of attention/profit from Banshee as they could from installing a TTD clone, but they probably feel more comfortable that Banshee will be up and running on a more regular basis and provide the average park attendee a better experience on any given day just by the assumption that it will be open on the day they are there.

At this point in time, the last think KI can stand is another SOB or The Bat coaster, one that is both innovative and up and running for a much, much shorter time than you'd expect.

Not so. I wouldn't be. I know how much parks treasure reliabilty, safety and life cycle costs. In not a single one of those three categories is INTAMIN the industry leader.

The reason you only see Intamin with cable lifts & the lot are probably due to very extensive copyrights. Look at Crypt/Tomb Raider, the seating, theming, and all had to be taken down due to their copyrights. They removed a row, literally because of that, or for what I've seen/heard, I'm sure others will chime in to follow.

During the transition from Tomb Raider to The Crypt, the front row of the gondola was removed so the gondola could be reduced in weight. This would, in theory, allow for a more acrobatic ride cycle to make up for the lost theming. The new ride cycle tore up the machinery more than the TRTR cycle so the cycle was yet again changed to the less intense two-flip cycle. If I can recall correctly, the ride opened with a two flip cycle and closed with a similar cycle.

Hey! I can copy & paste from Wiki too!

Intamin has been in the news for a number of safety-related accidents or incidents.
  • In 1984, three passengers riding The Edge at Six Flags Great America were injured and briefly hospitalized. The ride experienced a software malfunction that caused it to fall backwards down the wrong shaft.[1]

  • On May 16, 1999, a 365 lb (166 kg) guest was unable to close his lap bar on the Ride of Steel roller coaster at Six Flags Darien Lake. As a result, he was ejected, fell approximately 9 feet as the ride went over a "camel hump" hill, and suffered serious injuries. He sued the park and the ride manufacturer for negligence and was awarded US$3.95 million.[2]

  • In August 1999, a 12-year-old mentally disabled boy fell from the Drop Tower: Scream Zone at Paramount's Great America and died. The victim's family claimed his harness was not locked properly. An investigation was inconclusive and no charges were filed.[3][4]

  • In September 2001, a 40-year-old woman fell from the Perilous Plunge attraction at Knott's Berry Farm, into the water, was hit by the boat, and died. An investigation showed that the 300 lb (140 kg) woman had loosened the safety restraints so she could fit more comfortably into the ride.[5]

  • On April 16, 2004, a 16-year-old girl from Pontypool was killed after falling approximately 30 m (100 ft) from the top of the Hydro (now called Drenched) ride at Oakwood Leisure Park, Narberth, Pembrokeshire.[6] During a trial brought by the victim's family against Oakwood, a jury returned a narrative verdict stating that the victim died due to being improperly restrained.[7]

  • The second incident of 2004 was on one of Intamin's mega coasters, Superman: Ride of Steel at Six Flags New England in Massachusetts. The ride, again with lap bar restraints, was dispatched with a sufferer of cerebral palsy in the front seat, who died after being ejected from his seat. According to an investigation [1], the ride operators were primarily to blame for not ensuring the rider was properly secured. Intamin was also partially blamed because the ride's safety system allowed the train to be dispatched without all the restraints properly secured.

  • In June 2007, a 13-year-old girl had both of her feet severed at the ankles on Superman: Tower of Power at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. A ride malfunction caused a cable to snap and a cord to wrap around the girl's feet, amputating both of them. She was brought to the hospital in critical condition [8] and the park was later fined $1,000 for not properly maintaining the ride. The girl survived the accident and doctors were able to re-attach her right foot. A settlement was later reached with Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom that will provide for her throughout her life.[9]

  • On September 16, 2009, two guests were injured when a cable snapped on the Xcelerator roller coaster at Knott's Berry Farm. The 12-year-old victim had lacerations on his leg, while the adult victim complained of back injuries.[10]

  • On July 8, 2011, a 29-year-old guest was killed when he was ejected from the Ride of Steel roller coaster. The rider, an Iraq War veteran whose legs had been amputated, was on the front row of the roller coaster when he was thrown from the train during the course of the ride. Park officials stated that the ride was in proper mechanical order and that the various safety restraints were also working normally at the time of the incident, but that the attraction would remain closed pending an investigation.[11][12]

  • On February 24, 2012, a 14-year-old girl died in an accident at Hopi Hari, Vinhedo, São Paulo State, Brazil. She fell from the Drop Tower ride "La Tour Eiffel", suffered cranial trauma and died on the way to the hospital. Initial investigations suggested the possibility of mechanical failure in the restraint latch.[13]

  • On July 24, 2012, a launch cable snapped on the launch coaster Rita at Alton Towers in Staffordshire, UK. No one was hurt on or off the ride. Since then, the launch area has been sealed off to all guests, whereas before guests were able to walk underneath the launch to get access to the entrance of Th13teen, another of Intamin's rides.

At least with Banshee, a reliable & safe B&M, we know the odds are it will be open for guests to enjoy come opening day!

Don't be mad bro, perhaps one day you will understand the safety of your "daughter" on any ride will overshadow what you believe to "push the envelope over a ride that is incredible".
