Steel Vengeance no longer allows cell phones on the ride or in line with you

I really feel that station bins would help stop some of this, and cause a whole lot less uproar and anger among guests than this policy does. Other CP rides have them and they cause few problems. But the problem for CF is that they're free for guests to use.

I'm not sure I buy that adding them negatively affects capacity in a major way. People forgetting to fasten seatbelts before lapbars or heavier-set people needing that extra push or escorted off adds the same amount of time (if not more).

How would station bins keep cell phones from being stolen?

I think if they merely enforce the rules already in place, it would eliminate the problem. Word of mouth would get around fast if security took people's cell phones when caught having them out on rides. Add in some ejections for multiple offenses and the problem would go away.

Go back to yesteryear and have the park install good old fashioned pay phones in the queues throughout the park. One quarter gets you 30 seconds of talk and each additional quarter gets you 15 seconds. Haha. What goes around comes around. If someone needs to make an earth shattering call, there you go. Of course someone will find a way to bring a gigantic pay phone on SV, take it out of there arse pocket and make a call. Where there's a will there's a way.

Like I said before, if they would actually enforce the original policy it wouldn't have been an issue. This aggravates me so much, people who actually follow park rules get punished. I shouldn't have to get a locker. Also putting this policy on just this ride is ridiculous, actually have the ops do their job and boot people out the park when they have their phone out no exceptions.

^If Cedar Fair wants to truly do something about this, then report these videos to YouTube as being illegal videos so that they are removed.

Next ban Wesley Redding for his POV on Steel Vengeance and Millennium Force.  Revoke season pass if he has one and whoever else was with him.  Ban him from the park.  Run a promo video that says this is what happens if you do this.

Next ban Mike Boilard for his POV of his little princess on Iron Dragon and Pipe Scream.  Revoke the whole family's season passes.  Ban them from park and ...(see above)..

Next do a simple search of YouTube and find these other videos and do the same as above...

Until the park does something to get these removed from social media, they will continue to be posted.

It really isn't that hard to figure out who most of the people are that post this stuff and then cross-reference the season pass holder names to find said person...

Until they set an example like Kentucky Kingdom of what will happen if you have a cell phone out on the ride, it will continue to happen.  Make some of these people poster boys for breaking the law and a lot of people will stop (there will always be some that still do) but let's get real with enforcement!!!

With an injury from a flying cell phone, the lawyer will have a field day finding these videos and using as evidence that CF doesn't care...

If this policy is still in effect in 2019 here is my idea on how I will deal with it---Not for everyone but for myself and some others it seems reasonable.

First off I have a $20 Android Tracfone  and I get a $100 1 year service card every year and that has enough data and minutes for my 20 or so days a year at the park/parks. ( I just use this phone so I can be reached in case of an emergency and to take a few pictures and play with in line) So it costs me $100 a year to not bring in and risk damage/losing my more way expensive IPhone 8.

Her is my solution---I am considering getting an Apple watch with cellular and from what I understand after the initial cost of the watch (not cheap) it will cost me $10 a month on my current plan. So for just $20 more a year I get a good watch (good for all year not just park visits) and 1 less thing to carry in the park.

Hopefully they don't ban Apple watches in the future.

Thoughts?

If KI can ban wedding rings on a water slide I wouldn’t put it past them to ban watches on a coaster at some point.

You know what's funny is I was at Soak City with a girl last week that has like 6 piercings in her lobes and we were informed of the policy at the front of the line and were kind of taken back by it.  The kid was nice enough to offer to hold all of her earings but it was just not logistically work it for that one slide (well, 3 - but you know what I mean).  Multiple ear piercings are so incredibly common now that I'm surprised that this was the best solution that anyone (them or White Water) could come up with.  Removing piercings was not a rule, but it was highly suggested for Flight of Fear when it first opened too.

I do kind of fear that "no cell phone in any ride ever" will be a 'thing' at some point, although I doubt it will last.  I really think that the solution to the problem is to have a zipper pouch at every seat.  Put all of your stuff in there.   If you're caught filming while riding then you are escorted out.  Kentucky Kingdom of all places does a pretty good job of this. Absolutely no loose articles on rides.  No exceptions.  However they do make every accommodation they can to make sure that both your safety and your enjoyment are not compromised by this.  This includes both signage warning you of what will happen if you're caught as well as bins to put your personal belongings in on all rides.

^They aren't anything new to the industry.  Heck, Crypt at KI used them.

We can blame human error on many concepts to improve the park experience, but for a majority of people, they work well.  You're always going to have exceptions, flaws and human error in anything.  You can only foolproof things so far.

I think the only reason the parks wouldn’t want to put in pouches vs the bins that are already offered at most rides would be if the pouch failed or didn’t work at all, the guest would easily be able to make the park buy them a new whatever due to faulty equipment.  If they use the bins and another guest messes with it, the park has no responsibility.

Crypt did have them and there were times the bags zippers would not work leading to awkward moments of having to share a pouch... Also people tend to shove drinks and everything into them.

The other issue is that the pouches still don't solve the problem of a guest getting a phone out on a ride, and it could even make it worse since it would be right in front of them. I guess I don't mind ponying up for a locker as long as the cost is reasonable, and I feel that the $1 an hour charge is reasonable. If I didn't I'd just leave my phone in the car, and if I was the 1 in 50 that actually had to have it with me I'd just make proper arrangements or such it up and pay the $.

I guess I'm different and just like having the park as an excuse to get away from my phone and social media.

Parks generally don't take any responsibility for lost or damaged articles, so that probably won't be an issue. Guests don't have to take their stuff with them to ride.

I am curious how the phone pouch tests at Kings Dominion have affected load times on TT.

^ I know they don’t take responsibility, however how much of an argument would it take to make them assume responsibility if a device they provided to protect loose articles didn’t function properly.  It would be similar to having a locker that failed to stay closed.  Would the park then be forced to take responsibility assuming the guest used to device provided properly?

I would imagine it would only help loading times, depending on the size of the pouch and if they are actually checking if the pouch is closed.

I was at Disneyland earlier this month and a majority of the rides there have pouches if necessary (such as Indiana Jones, Soarin, etc) and it seemed to help.  A big part of slower loading times are people running over to the bins to drop their stuff instead of getting in the car and sitting down.

Why not a pneumatic pouch that is lined with foam to keep articles from moving when closed.  As the seats are locked, so would they.  They could have a sensor to make sure they are closed before the train could leave the station.  Just a thought.

Only problem with that is faulty sensors are usually what takes rides down.  So let’s add like 80 more to each coaster.

Maybe it could be integrated with the seat harness system?  I am sure it could be engineered in some way, I am just not an engineer.  I still believe that you get cameras or upgrade them to monitor the ones getting the phones out and make an example.  People talk, it would police itself.

It might not even take a malfunction to force responsibility. I seem to recall a case several years ago at one park (I want to say Dorney, but I'm not at all sure on that) where a guest successfully sued the park over something stolen from the bins, and the court ruled the "not responsible for lost or stolen items" sign unenforceable (or in legal terms, unconscionable).

Can anyone confirm this? Or is my mind making things up?

There is an employee at the queue entrance who will check for phones.  Not all loose articles, just phones.  The thoroughness of the check, at least to me, differed from employee to employee.  There are lockers right next to the entrance though.  Employees also walk around the queue scanning the line for people who have phones out.

I just kept my phone in my car the entire time I was at CP.
