Coney Island Cincinnati to remove all rides

Recommended Posts

Huh. I never knew the Python was that old. Was it relocated from somewhere else? Also - has anyone heard mention of auctioning off any of the other park assets? I remember there was an old Ms. Pac-Man arcade cabinet languishing in the attic of the games building along with lots of spare parts for Skee-Ball, etc. Could be a veritable gold mine for someone in that line of work.

Yes just saw this on Facebook

According to RCDB, Python was relocated to Coney Island from Splash Zone Waterpark in Wildwood, New Jersey. It only started there in 1996 though so who knows what history it has beyond that.

Apparently it's from 1974. I'm really thinking about going to the auction tomorrow to see if I can't pick up a sign that says Coney Island on it.

I got up bright and early and headed to the sale this morning.  Souvenir hunters, former employees and amusement park aficionados were all over the place.  As my favorite game in the arcade was Skee-Ball, I gladly forked over $100 for a piece of Coney history.  Now I have to figure out what to do with it.  A smaller sign with the old Coney logo was only $20.

Here were some of the other items on offer.  Most of the signs were snapped up quickly, but the remainders will likely be found on Facebook Marketplace pretty soon.

It was a little odd to see some of the games that I used to work on with a price tag on them.  They were asking $7,500 for the water race game - not so sure about that given it didn't usually work 100% correctly.

And finally, some daylight photos of the current ride deconstruction process.  I was surprised to see that virtually nothing remains from the Pepsi Python.  Sadly I couldn't get photos of all the rides as there was a security guard on patrol.

It is really hard to see those photos with those rides completely gone.  I spent many year and many hours of my life down there running those rides and being a manager in the rides department.

I will be returning next year, working over at Sunlite Water Adventure.  I hope that Coney can be successful without the rides.  But my personal opinion is that they will struggle.  The rides filled a perfect niche, and my son loved all the kiddy rides and the Scream Machine.  I was hoping to take my daughter there eventually to ride the rides too.

Definitely disappointed that KI would not buy the flying bobs and tilt a whirl. I feel like those are two old school flat rides really missing at KI. Hopefully if they do not buy from Coney Island they will eventually buy them else where.

Keep in mind that the closure of the rides was announced suddenly. It may be more that KI/CF didn't have time to plan the acquisition of any former Coney rides. They'd have to account for it budget-wise and also figure out where they were going to put the rides, and that assumes they don't need major maintenance.

I believe the Flying Bobs was a portable model anyway, which wouldn't fit well at KI. Not sure about Tilt-a-Whirl.

While everyone is still sad, here are a few photos I never posted from the summer of 2015.  What a shame it was to see the Trabant in this condition.
