There's a certain well known youtuber who just put out a video claiming it could be an issue with the brakes due to stacking on the brake run. Another person who has operated some of those older Arrows commented on said video. They pretty much debunked that theory and said its likely an issue with the control system. They said all late 80's Arrow's have issues with the controls and some like Magnum and Iron Dragon have been replaced. They said its expensive and the park likely did not want to spend the money to do it.

Anyone happen to know what issues with the control system these late 80s arrows have?

  2. ^ interesting video, but I’m not sure I buy brakes being the problem with the ride, if it was wouldn’t they just run 2 trains? Also they likely could have ended up buying more breaks for the ride. Maybe a ride op for Vortex would be better informed on the subject if brakes were ever an issue (Since Taylor suggested ride ops were rushed to prevent this which I doubt to be true)

This day and age it would not surprise me. Many people today don't know what it is like to have to work hard in any conditions.

You are aware these people will be working in the middle of the winter in freezing conditions right?

WIll it though?  For some, sure.  For others, perhaps not.

Either way,  the backwards Racer could potentially help to alleviate some of the pain that some folks may be suffering due to loss of the nostalgia  that Vortex will be taking with it after it has given its last ride.

I mean this is likely going to become the best coaster in the park for many and is a kind of rollercoaster that draws people from around the world to ride it so yes, I do think it will be enough to compensate for a 33 year old rollercoaster many do not enjoy riding. I’m not happy about Vortex leaving but I’d say the large majority will feel this new coaster is enough.

That seems like a pretty big mistake though. That mistake is now on concept posters on the fence. It just seems odd

Apparently the animator wasn’t aware of the change according to Sean Flaharty who’s friends with the animator. Considering how many projects the guy works on I definitely could see something like that flying under the radar. Also the waterpark is on the wrong side of the park... I wouldn’t look to much into this.

After five days now, and a trip to KI Sunday I am very excited to see the removal of Vortex. The time has come, and to see which direction Cedar Fair takes KI is exciting. So far under their leadership we have received huge rides. Diamondback, Banshee, Mystic Timbers, and now Orion. Kings Island has an opportunity to make an dead area of the park alive again. It started with the Antique Cars, and will continue with a new ride in The Vortex vacant land. Too many types to speculate towards, but Copperhead Strike and Maverick are two of the most fun rides I have ever ridden. Good bye to the old and decaying hello to the new and shiny! I have never been more excited for the future of KI. Orion is going to be amazing , and whatever replaces Vortex will be amazing as well.

If I’m going to be quite honest I don’t think Vortex was the problem with Coney Mall(Especially considering how nice the ride looked), I’d call the eyesore know as Backlot to be the issue. Vortex was a good ride, while it maybe old at least it isn’t a parking garage and shipping containers...

I haven't spoke on this yet cause I feel it's a very touchy subject. My honest thoughts on this, I am not happy at all. Was at the park Sunday and didn't see a single thing to pay homage to this ride. This has been a bad year for CF in my opinion however I'm sure you will disagree. I see Firehawk and one of the most iconic coasters leaving the park in a year span, and we lost the royal fountain. I have lost hype for Orion, I just feel like they should have waited at least a year for this one. Not seeing Vortex anymore will hurt for sure, and it will hurt more than not seeing the original fountain.

I definitely wish they would have been able to squeeze another year out of the ride, the hype around Orion has really diminished for me personally. However I personally think this season has been fantastic, we got a 7 million dollar I-Street renovation, grand Carnival, a new restaurant, Antique cars  & all the hype around Orion. Just sad its ending on a bad note.

  8. Don’t know if this is the right thread but on some of the Orion T-Shirts it has a triangle logo (Which looks better then the other one imo) which reminds me of Vortex’s Triangle logo, I think we might see a bit of a reference to Vortex maybe?

I know someone said back that Cedar Fair doesn’t want to spend the capital on coasters like they used too. I was at the park Sunday thinking if Vortex was at the end of its life Flight Deck and Adventure Express aren’t far behind.  In all honesty Invertago should go too. There are a lot of coasters that could be considered for removal and I personally see a lot of changes for KI more quickly rather than more slowly. Not to mention the water park and kids area both could use an update. The park seems to have gotten old really fast.

I don’t think these rides are going to get removed in the near future, they are not going to strip Kings Island of 5 coasters within 10 years... the only reason it’s gotten old is due to the fact Cedar Fair has had to address so many of the issues paramount left over.

I am sad I didn't get to ride this season. ugh  totally regretting that!

In previous seasons I only rode Vortex once or twice a season but this season I fell in love with the ride (Partially due to the fact it was almost always a walk-on), such a fun ride to marathon imo. Im glad I managed to get 200+ rides on it this season, also kind of sucks I got attached to the ride though; just makes this announcement harder to accept.

    Interesting observation....
Next season KI’s oldest steel coaster will be Adventure Express built in 1991....

Oldest wooden coasters Racer and Woodstock Express from 1972....

But weren’t steel coaster supposed to be cheaper to maintain?

The thing about wooden coasters is that if there’s problems with the track it can be easier to replace, steel coasters not so much. Wooden coasters probably need more attention during the off-season (replacing the wood ect) compared to steel coasters but in the long run a wooden coaster could theoretically last forever If you care for it.

So what would a 'good' Vortex removal announcement look like to those of you not satisfied with it (including the context given that Firehawk was just demolished and Orion's announcement)?

A good Vortex announcement would have been no announcement at all ;)

A better announcement probably would have been a few weeks earlier, and maybe at least dropping a few hints that a rollercoaster was going to be removed. That would have at least kind of gotten people mentally prepared for the potential of the ride being removed.

You're not wrong. Here's the deal. I'm just ****ed that Cedar Fair let me find out by a push notification that my favorite roller coaster manufacturers most beautiful ride at my favorite park is being demolished. I hate to be that guy but Cedar Point wouldn't be dealing with this, they get to keep corkscrew. And if they took corkscrew down they would probably get some world record smashing coaster. My heart is just heavy ladies and gents. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to get over the fact that I have such limited time to go see my coaster.

I do agree that the announcement of the closure could have been handled better. We just really don’t know a lot about this removal, we don’t know how long ago they’ve know about this. My heart sunk when I woke up to see a text message with a photo saying Vortex gets removed. It’s tragic that such an iconic ride is meeting its end but at least we have a month to get some closure.

I am saddened by this news, but also have a sense of hope. Vortex at one time in the past was a headliner but lets be honest, it is what the 6th or 7th best coaster at the park? If and this is a if, Cedar Fair builds another world class ride like there last four coasters. (I am including Orion) Then all of a sudden your depth is that much better. Just think The Beast would then be the 6th best ride in the park. And a park that has The Beast as it's 6th best ride is really, really good park. And not just a regional park but a destination park.

The Beast could potentially be the 6th best coaster in the park?.... The Beast is #1 always... Orion is a half-hearted attempt by a pathetically boring company. Orion will either be the worlds tallest and fastest hyper, or we can call it the worlds shortest smallest and slowest giga.

That’s not a good way to look at things… it’s a rollercoaster with a 300 ft drop let’s not act like it’s garbage. The Beast maybe your favorite ride in the park but you can’t ignore the fact rides like Diamondback & Orion will be the GP’s go to, it might not be your style but I wouldn’t call a 91 mph 5000+ ft rollercoaster bad.

I'm sure there's a strategy to what they're doing. @JubJester mentioned how FH and VX's removal announcements were exactly a year apart so that isn't a coincidence. Additionally I don't know of a functioning amusement park that has removed two coasters back to back.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but is the park telling guests to get their final rides on it? I remember they did for Firehawk but I don't remember seeing a statement by the park telling people when Vortex will have its last day.

    Its all kinda fishy

I mean it probably isn’t a coincidence but it makes sense to announce it around this time. If they announced it before Orion that would have made the response even worse then what it already is. This announcement gives fans enough time to hopefully be able to say their goodbyes. Announcing it at 4:30 am is still a little distasteful imho. The first part of the blog mentions that coaster fans need to get their last rides in before Vortex rides into history. I do agree though there’s definitely something behind the scenes that happened since how sudden this announcement seems to be.

Does anyone think KI is hinting in the Orion teaser posters that FoF, and Invertigo are also being retired soon?

Doubt it, all the rides have a high tech or spaceish vibe to them. More importantly Cedar Fair likely wouldn’t remove 4 major thrill rides that recently to each other.

  17. I’m still wanting a launch B&M wing coaster. I really don’t see anything but a coaster going into that plot of land due to the fact it’s a huge valley. What ever they build I hope they plant more trees.

Yep. Part of me thinks CF is slowly getting rid of these rides for other reasons, possibly to save money and to take out KI's iconic rides. Vortex was truly the last great Arrow looper. Why would CF not want KI to have it? The Viper and Lochness would be the other ones, but Viper is in horrible shape, but still up and running, nonetheless.  Lochness Monster will be the last good one standing IMO, and that was built in the 70s. I hope they at least keep The Vortex's/ Bat's beautiful station, but i'm sure CF will probably want to rip that one from history as well.

Cedar Fair isn’t out to get Kings Island, the ride was eventually going to have to bite the dust. I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep the station to maybe use it for a haunt maze to be honest.
