According to the article, KD's Drop Tower "rises up a 305 tower and drops 272 feet".

KI's tower is 315 feet but the fall is only 264.

If these figures are accurate, anyone here know the reason for that? Just different manufacturer or style of Drop Tower?

The numbers maybe inaccurate but Kings Dominion website states it drops you 27 stories while Kings Island website states it drops you 26 stories (which converted to about 281 ft). My guess is that Kings Island has a longer break section due to the fact it’s the older model, maybe the breaks were improved for the KD model.

Could we ever see an Intamin Blitz coaster in the park?

    * I know i'll get crap for this question lol Oh well.*

I really wish we’d see a blitz but I think The only way that’s happening is if Intamin really really tried to sweet talk current management into working with the company again. Intamin’s are just risky investments.

I think a Giga might get KI past 3.5 million (since MT and Winterfest got the park close at 3.469m as long as the 2018 drop isn't too huge), but not by much as Kings Island does seem to attract about as many guests as it can already.

A giga would certainly be able to get the park to 3.5, I’d say 3.6 million wouldn’t be an unreasonable estimate considering giga coasters are huge draws. Kings Island is still growing and I don’t believe the market is saturated. A 13% increase over a decade is a healthy growth rate in my opinion. You can’t expect a park that already draws a large number of people to grow by 3-4%

The park doesn't want another "Black Sunday" and "Tower Johnny."

My Dad always used to freak me out on the drive to Kings Island with those stories. I don’t think having a fence is that unreasonable, a lot of kids go to the park and it only takes a second for one to run away from their parents and end up injured on the fountain.

How do you know that the attendance at Kings Island wasn't as good as 2017? Based on personal observations, doesn't really give actual facts of attendance being on a decline or an incline.

If we go on personal observations after a ride has been installed and attendance has declined, I'd venture to say Kings Dominion fits that category. I would guess Kings Island has never really hit a mark in the parks history quite like KD has.

I agree, if attendance declined after large investments then I don’t really see CedarFair installing rollercoasters as often as they do, if Banshees growth was only that season and the next season declined I seriously doubt CedarFair would have built Mystic Timbers as soon as they did

The park is starting to get stale for the GP and attendance is on its way down. Many were disappointed by Mystic Timbers and are hoping for more. The way to fix this issue is by giving KI a record-breaking coaster that will bring people far and wide to the park. A giga is one answer but another could be a ground-up RMC on the scale of Steel Vengence. Although this is unlikely an RMC would be built for 2020, it would still be suitable for the park.

Who exactly was disappointed about Mystic Timbers? The only people I think would be disappointed are the people who thought the shed would be some sort of out of this world element. The ride is consistently popular and many consider it to be the best ride in the park. Furthermore the park got MT 2 years ago, if they’re expecting a new rollercoaster every 2 years then they’re out of luck.

A cellular Apple Watch has been the best thing for me at parks. Leave the wallet, phone, and keys in the car thanks to the outside keypad I litterly cab car nothing in the park in my pockets.

Yeah I love using my Apple Watch at the park, able to remain connected while not having to worry about losing or dropping my phone.

I almost feel like the problem was recently remanufactured with the trend of not having bins. It helps with dispatch times, but it creates a dangerous situation when people stow their cell phones in unsecured pockets. I honestly think that it ultimately hurts the park to not allow cell phones in line. I couldn’t imagine standing in line for two hours for SV without my phone. It’s probably far worse for younger people who have never really known a world without cell phones. It runs the risk of making parks “not cool” in their eyes. It’s a trend that would be very problematic for a very valuable demographic.

I have been beyond shocked that it took this long for this idea to re-emerge. I think the earliest example I can think of for pouches is Tomb Raider - which was over 15 years ago now.

I understand the no bags policy to an extent, but it does feel like a cash grab when they sell the souvenir bottles and then require you to put them into a locker to ride some rides. I’m a big fan of the disposable cup thing, but it still feels like many parks still push the bottles and simply feed into their own problems.

Am I alone in this thought process?

Yeah I’ve also heard other people talk about parks not raising the next generation to like theme parks. They talked about how Fast Lane,  the kids who grow up using it might not want to go back to the parks once their adults because they’re not going to have the same experience they had with Fast Lane. I personally never bring my phone anywhere at the park due to the fact I’m not risking to drop a $1000 phone, but I completely understand where you’re coming from.

What if the new coaster isn't a giga? I could see a new flat ride package, maybe a different B&M model, but the recent giga rumors from the past few years have been wrong. I'm not trying to be contrary, just reminding people to keep an open mind.

I mean everyone wants a giga, the park wants a giga, who doesn’t want a giga? Based off of all the evidence, recent events & Cedar Fairs history a giga at this point is certain. The only debate at this point is when we get it. I for one assume it’ll be 2020.

I was looking at job listings for Kings Island and one of them required you to work up to heights of 380feet. Interesting....

There multiple attractions that are 300+ ft, this is just a filler number. Further more it doesn’t really matter since that requirement is for this season, the requirements can change seasonally.

Jason McClure said they were averaging 28 to 30 lost phones a day on Steel Vengeance. That's the same amount as all the rides combined for a week. He also stated there was some serious injuries.

Man that’s a lot, just takes one phone to hit someone in the face for a lawsuit. I’m happy they went with the pouch on the train route rather then metal detectors at the ride entrance.  Wonder how much the number of lost phones decreased once the ban was in place.

And on an unrelated note, has anyone else ever found it ironic that the wooden coaster trains built by primarily-steel coaster manufacturers have been characteristic of the some of the roughest wooden coasters in history...

    B&M on Psyclone

Premier on SOB w/loop, Bandit @ Movie Park

    Gerstlauer on SOB w/o loop

Intamin on Coaster Express, Magnus Colossus

Morgan on Texas Cyclone @ SF Astro World, Riverside Cyclone @ SF New England (In the 90s I've read)

    But to be fair

I’d say that maybe it could be because wooden rollercoaster manufacturers make their own trains for the most part and have perfected  their design. RCCA on the other hand was a relatively new manufacturer that didn’t have the resources to make their own train so they outsourced it, which would explain the trend. More experience resulted in manufacturers like GCI the ability to make their own trains.

I'd say about 20%. I fully expect on opening day there to be signs of construction and a wall with teasers up. At that point the "decoding 2020" thread will get opened on the main KI subforum and this thread will get pretty silent. Only a couple months till that point, so another 60 pages wouldn't be likely without spamming. The last two months have only had 18 pages for comparison.

I mean the off season is pretty dry. Once there’s teasers and stuff everyone is going to be flooding this place with their thoughts. I’d say there’s a 40% chance we’ll get to 200 but if the rollercoaster is announced somewhat early then that’d probably result in the end of this thread.

Chances of a new B&M Coaster in 2020: 97%(3% reduction for natural disaster/terrorist acts or something else that would cause them to cancel the project)

Chances of is being a Giga: 85%(Wing, floorless, and flyer are in the game, but I'd be highly surprised if they didn't go Giga)

As for the permits not being proof, thats the kind of nonsense that attention seekers, contrarians, and people desperately hoping their pet project/company are coming spout off.It was the same when Banshee footers were in the ground and was clearly for a B&M inverted. There were still people on here saying it proved nothing and it was going to be an Intamin Giga.

Kings Island would not have to file permits for work done elsewhere. Whoever paints the track at CSF would be contracted and paid by CSF(or possibly B&M depending on how their contract is laid out) and would have nothing to do with the Kings Island side of it. KI has a contract with B&M for a coaster. They don't contract with the people that paint the track, the steel company that made the pipe and plating that CSF uses to make the track or Joe the welder who assembled it. If Baynum is listed on KI's permits, they are doing work at KI.

Baynum works on site though when a rollercoaster is assembled to assure the paint job is fine.

They definitely paint them in house. If you drive by at the right time, when the front left bay door is open, you can get a glimpse at the room they paint in.

Yea they paint them in house but Baynum maybe contracted to paint the rides at their facility which wouldn’t be that strange. Baynum is in the Cincinnati area and also here’s a fun fact - the first ride they painted was The Beast.

As I said in my post, I personally believe the new coaster will be a B&M coaster.  I highly doubt that either one of our B&Ms needs significant modification such as a new chain or anti-rollbacks, but if they did, I would suppose they would have to be permitted but then again I don't know.  Those specific items were mentioned as a "what if."  As far as painting--I could see a permit needed for the painting above a certain elevation as @sixohdieselrage said.  I don't know about Mason/Warren County codes, but I wouldn't think a permit would be needed.  As far as painting a new coaster from B&M--wouldn't that be part of the initial build cost, and the painting happen at the factory?  If so, why would a permit be needed for a new coaster?

In regards to painting according to Baynums website their completed projects includes Banshee indicating they’re the ones who paint it which may result in them having to be listed.
