  1. Hmm, as I see it the park is a business. With most businesses, the goal is to make money. Harry Potter is a very popular book/movie series. Retheming the ride could bring more people to the park who would be willing to spend more money (Though I do believe the park does pretty good as it is).

I intend on running my own business someday and making lots of money with it, that's just who I am. So, I don't blame them for this if it is their decision to change the ride.

Well, that and I enjoy HP.

  2. "If you have to ask, you can't afford it!"

Which is precisely why I intend to make my own. ;)

Sounds like a perfectly great idea to me.

I've always wanted to make the basic outline of a car from The Beast or something into the coolest bed frame ever.

  3. Some eyes rolling into the back of the head madness?!?!?

    ....then you're ready for.....

That's great!!!! It looks like he is getting electrocuted and just won't let go of the grips!!!!!!

From the angle, it almost looks as though the guy with the freaky eyes is pulling the hair of the girl in front of him.

  4. Here's something I've always wondered...you see graffiti & "gum walls" at KI, CP, the Six Flags parks, and even some Busch Parks pretty commonly. Unfortunately, it's pretty much par for the course.

But, you never see that at Disney? Why is that? I have to believe they have the same "bad apples" attend their parks as well...

Keep in mind the numbers Disney employs.

    Cast Members

    Disneyland - 8,000

    Disneyland Paris - 14,000

    Disney's Hollywood Studios - 2,800 to 4,500

    Epcot - 5,000 to 7,000

    Magic Kingdom - 6,000 to 8,000

    Pleasure Island - 300

    WDW Property-wide - 65,000

    Tokyo Disneyland - 6,000

    Typhoon Lagoon - 380

In addition, think about the extra step Disney usually goes to completely immerse park patrons into the created environment. I'm not saying that the other parks aren't doing a great job with their parks, but I'm simply saying I would find it more likely for Disney to go the extra step in cleaning park vandalism.

  5. The same way I did about most things...I am a quirky reader, who devours all kinds of stuff...and I am VERY interested in design and architecture, as at least one person here can testify, even though I am not in any way employed in the field. I bet I am one of the few here who takes Architectural Digest AND Car, Landscape Architect, Advertising Age and Fast Food News...I am sure my postmaster is still trying to figure out how many different people share my post office box! :)

Landscape architect...I might have to start taking that one.

All this talk about turnstiles reminds me of one bad memory...While leaving KI one day (I was probably about 4 or 5) I decided I could squeeze through the turnstile in front of a family member. Somehow I managed to wedge my head and body into the turnstile. It hurt, and I cried. Luckily my mother was able to free me from the grip of the turnstile.

  6. Perhaps he thought no one would be interested in such pedestrian things.

Terpy, who once astounded a turnstyle salesguy at IAAPA, by being interested and knowing more about he product than did the salesguy

What?! Terpy, Terpy, Terpy. You should know by now to read before you post ;)

Anyways, I assume you meant more than the sales person, and if so, that is pretty bad on the salesguy's part.

The post had been edited before you replied but not on your screen. And yes, the product....

All too many salespeople know all too little about their products...

How does one end up in the business of selling turnstiles? I think I want that job.

Are you sure? It's commision based, and you make money only when you make a sale.

Well, fair enough. I'd rather have a salary based pay.

  7. ....

I was just thinking this. While I am perfectly happy with what Kings Island is, it must have been meant to be so much more. I noted the guy talking about the golf courses across the highway and mini golf at the campground as well as nature trails there. Does anyone want to elaborate on those for me? As far as I know, they didn't ever exist.

I'm not sure about a nature trail at the campground, but there was a nature trail in Rivertown at the far end (circa early and mid 1970s before The Beast). The entrance was at the end of the path bracketed by the individual canoes (where KCKC and TRTR later occupied) and the war canoes (where Beast resides currently). The trail curved around, went down the side of the hill to the creek that runs under the KIMVRR trestle, crossed over a small bridge and back up the hill on the other side. The trail going up the hill would be to the left of where the Diamondback's bottom of second hill is today. You could easily see the trail from the train when going over the trestle.

    Okay, thank you!

  8. See my post above. Originally, when Taft Broadcasting purchased the land that Kings Island sits on, they bought 1,600 acres of land on both sides of Interstate 71. The Kings Island Inn and Conference Center was built by Taft and owned by them for several years. It is now owned by the Belvedere Corporation, based out of the Carew Tower downtown.

In addition, Taft developed the Golf Center at Kings Island. I believe that the city of Mason recently purchased the property after it was placed for sale and they did not want to see more subdivisions built on the land. I`m not sure when Taft divested the property. Additionally, the Lindner Family Tennis Center, home to the Western and Southern Financial Master`s and Women`s Open was part of the land that Taft had purchased for Kings Island. Again, I do not know when Taft sold this land.

Lastly, there is the Kings Island campground. This was a functional campground until the conclusion of the 2004 season. After the 2004 season, construction started on the $100 million Great Wolf Lodge at Kings Island. CBS, the owner of Kings Island at the time that land was "sold off" acquired a minority interest in the GWL in exchange for the land. I believe their stake was about 16%. When Cedar Fair bought Paramount Parks from CBS, they were offered CBS`s share of the GWL. However, they were not interested in it. CBS later sold their share of the GWL to Great Wolf.

Does that help answer some of your questions? I`m not sure on the exact dates that Taft sold off these adjacent amenities and other details and timelines on when they were actually developed. Hopefully you found some of that information insightful.

Indeed, it does. I wasn't aware that the Golf Center had been developed by Taft. I have stayed at the Kings Island Inn, and well, we vowed never to stay there again. Perhaps it is much different now, but at the time it wasn't much. That was when I was maybe 10ish? Not sure. I'm pretty sure I never stayed at the campground, but I know my mom did a lot when she was a kid with her family. She told me about when they visited the park and came back out to find that KI bumper stickers had been placed on all of the cars in the lot. Well, my Papaw found the employee doing so and well, needless to say the sticker was removed. Yes, the employee was only doing what he had been told to do, but my Papaw wasn't thrilled about it.

So was there ever minigolf at the campground?
