  1. Pine is very weak fOr the same reason it is very cheap (which is obviously why it was chosen) it grows quick and is seen as easily replaceable

True pine is sometimes very weak, depending on the grade. My company uses a high grade of pine inside of barges to hold up 6500-8500 lbs steel coils, this works very well its cheap yet strong to do the job.

Wow, thats pretty strong, but could it hold approximately 13,000 pounds( train+people)under all of the forces of Son of Beast.

It's all in how you design the supports--which, based on the 2006 incident, seems to have been done imperfectly in (at least) the rose bowl. You can very easily design your supports to spread the weight of the train, as well as the other forces at play, among several beams, thus exerting less force on each one. You just have to be careful how you do it; you have to make sure all forces are accounted for. (For example, according to the SoB accident report from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the structure didn't account for an extra lateral load, which, in turn, caused that bent to fail.)

It's pretty much just a Statics/Dynamics problem. (I'm so glad that all these hours of engineering homework have only equated to me being able to post more on KIC... )

  2. I was searching around on Bing, and I found this older website that has interactive 360-degree panoramas of multiple parts of (then Paramount's) Kings Island from 2004. The pictures are on the smaller side, but it's still very cool to see whether you, like me, remember the park as it was then, or if you just want to compare it to how it is now. There are even some shots of defunct rides like the Flying Eagles. (Being the obvious TR:TR fan that I am, I especially enjoy the view of the old Swan Lake, Tomb Raider entrance, and Beast entrance. Just look at all those trees!)

    You can see them here.

There are also panoramas of Cedar Point, Geauga Lake, Kennywood, LeSourdesville Lake, and Michigan's Adventure, among others.

Just thought I'd share! Hope someone enjoys this as much as I did. General park atmosphere shots from back then do seem pretty difficult to come by (or at least they do when I look for them!)

  4. Welcome to KIC! :) The Gold Pass parking area is the part of the parking lot surrounded by white poles. It's situated at the "back" of the lot, near Kings Island Drive and the Kings Island sign. From the south parking lot entrance, I believe you can follow the signs to the lot. (Not sure about the north entrance... I've only been able to use it a handful of times in the past few years.

  5. ^^ Um... thanks for putting me in my place?

I never told you that you were wrong. I didn't deny that you got close to the goddess' face, nor did I accuse you of saying she was illuminated. I was just trying to set the record straight as to if anything's actually changed... since I rode it this year on the 22nd of July. And the 30th of April. And several days in between.

Your TR just made a point of the goddess being exceptionally noticeable. All I'm trying to point out is that she isn't any more or less noticeable than she's ever been since opening day 2008. Both the original Crypt cycle and the ferris wheel version got you equally close to the goddess.

Your TR made a point of the "riding sequence" having changed to hold you over the old lava pit and "ice pit". I assume you meant the stalactites from TR:TR by that. Those haven't been in the ride chamber since the Crypt change, and the "riding sequence" is no different than it's been since 2010, which you doubtlessly know based on your experience with the ride on the 14th of July. I'm just trying to clarify what's actually changed and what's just new to you.

    You're welcome very much.

  6. More detail in her trip report.

I see. Now that I've read it, I'm honestly a little more prone to believe that you haven't ridden The Crypt much lately, KingsIslandJonasGirl. As of Friday, the ride cycle has not changed from the two-flip, "ferris wheel" cycle that it's had since 2009. The only thing that's changed, as has been pointed out in this topic earlier, is that the old Tomb Raider lava LEDs that used to illuminate the water have been turned back on, giving you something to look at during that prolonged backwards flip. The goddess is just as almost-but-not-really illuminated as she's always been as The Crypt and isn't genuinely "featured" at any point during the ride.

I don't mean to be a jerk; that's just how it is.

  7. The ride op might have been nicer about it, but honestly, I'd much rather he ruin your day than have your phone ruin someone else's. Even if you might have felt that it wasn't going to go anywhere, accidents happen.

TombRaiderFTW, who can explain in great detail the usefulness of the zipper pouches on a nearby crypt...

  8. I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again: I can totally see HW being the first "official" owners of a Gravity Group Splinter. (I say "official" since Lost Coaster at Indiana Beach was CCI's doing, not TGG's.) That's my fanboy hope, but realistically, I'd sooner guess they're adding a flat to the Fourth of July section. As for what kind of flat? I've got no idea.

  9. and that may also be just that particular manufacturer (huss)

I bet Dolly might have something to say about that...

HUSS does seem to have plenty of issues lately with customer satisfaction. Delirium and The Crypt have both pretty much been prone to multiple weeks of downtown time for as long as I've known them, and a picture search on KI fansites will produce signs from the Paramount days where they had to wait on parts from Germany for quite a few days. I'd chalk that up to HUSS, not Cedar Fair.

I AM curious to know what the hold up is with this chain... It seems like fabricating a replacement chain wouldn't take this long, but maybe there's more to it than I know.

  10. And that man is now the Chief Operating Officer of Six Flags Theme Parks. Where they sell Flash Passes. In several different, progressively more expensive varieties.

Do you also remember reading the quote...I have tried for years to find the person's name who said it. Can you give me his name? :)

Edit: I forgot who I was dealing with...let me rephrase my last question. WOULD you give me his name?! :P

Unless I'm mistaken, it's Al Weber.

  11. Just wondering... Does anyone know if they mean "Grennon" or "Greenon"? I know a few people who went to a "Greenon" high school in Springfield, but I've never heard of a "Grennon".

Regardless, this is by far one of the coolest things I've ever seen related to KI. Thank you so much for sharing, standbyme!

  12. I hear Voyage's old trains, combined with recent retracking, have been very good to Predator. I've never been to Darien Lake, but I'm really curious to know if people still think the ride is bad/rough.

Here's a random thought: if KI ever were to replace Beast's trains (not sure why they would; just talking theoretically), can you imagine how long the trains would look if they tried to match the ride's current capacity? If the used 2-bench PTCs, they'd need 9 cars per train. That would look so odd! (I know it's completely spontaneous... The thought just hit me last week out of nowhere.)

  13. ^I personally didn't find Shockwave's trains last year to be any more or less comfortable than Mantis's. The only real difference is that the loading procedure for Shockwave seems to take longer since the restraints aren't exactly intuitive--you stick your arms through a vest while pushing a lap bar down so you can straddle a bicycle-style seat.

  14. I agree with Rotag. Unless you're powerwalking on an incredibly dead day, you're not going to be able to cover all of both Holiday World and Splashin' Safari in one day. Like he said, take a day to enjoy the dry park, then take the next day and take in the water park. Each half has its own charms that you'll miss if you try to cram all of it into one day.

  15. Slightly off topic, but I was just thinking about the CRT TVs the other day... Wasn't Diamondback's announcement video played on them shortly after it was announced? I seem to remember watching it in Beast's and Vortex's stations. It was a pretty cool effect, but I can see how maintenance costs would lead to their removal.

  16. ^ I realize you meant "ruins," but I can't resist.

Using that logic, we ought to be reunited with Tomb Raider: The Ride any day now. Cedar Fair just can't keep its hands off the theming!

TRFTW, who likes to find the humor in a touchy-feely situation.

  17. I used to have no issues with Millennium Force, but lately (as in the past two years) Millie grays me out from about halfway through the first overbank to the top of the following hill. All visits in that time, though, have been on blazing hot days where I probably haven't had enough water as I ought to drink. That's usually the primary deciding factor in whether or not I gray out.

The two times I've ridden I305 were when the ride had trims on the first drop, and both times I grayed out on the first turn. Again, it was on a blazing hot day, but the first time I had drank plenty of water. The second time... not so much. It got so bad that I was getting dizzy and literally couldn't see anything until the first hill's airtime sent all the blood back to my head. (And I still loved that ride, approximately 2.5 liters of water later. I'm still having trouble deciding if it beats The Voyage for my #1 overall!)

Moral of the story: drink your water, kids.

  18. The removal is a little odd, but I'd be most willing to bet that they're just replacing the decals. Those things have been peeling pretty bad for a while. (I'd like to imagine they're changing the theme/name... I'm not a big fan of the Flight Deck name.)
