  1. Review of cheesesteak sandwich weekend of aug 22 chef plate.
    First:
I will always be supportive and appreciate new options to the meal plan, especially ones involving grilled meat. So for me, this was a winner. Frankly this was the reason I went to the park this evening, as I typically avoid on Saturdays.

The preview... signage of the actual meal was non existent. If you didn’t hear about the meal via social media (as I did) I have no idea how you would have known what the chef special was. The gigantic prime rib hunks of meat on the grills were bringing people over though. Many interested in how they could buy one!

There were markers on the ground for a line, but if this continues to be popular they should really add some turnstiles or ropes to create a clear line off the concourse. The ordering system seemed to be slow everywhere tonight, and this wishbone grill was no expectation. It took about 5 minutes per person to place an order (although I was there close to 5:30, so hopefully they worked out the process better).

I don’t like cheese, so I requested without. That wasn’t an issue since each sandwich seemed to be made to order.

The first impression of the sandwich was that it looked fresh, bun, thin sliced meat, veggies, but kind of small for a “dinner”. It lived up to this, as it was tasty, but it certainly didn’t fill me up. Would be a perfect lunch portion, although it isn’t offered until 5pm.

The overall sandwich was good, although a little dry. Although to be fair, I chose to forgo the cheese (which looked great). The potatoes were cooked really well, I expected them to be under cooked and a little hard, but they were not and had oil/butter. Nothing fancy, but they were good.

My son ended up getting the pulled pork fries at river town. He gave me some of his saucy pulled pork to put on my sandwich, really made it awesome!

  2. Just wanted to share that I have been extremely happy with KI food this year.  Been to KI 6 days and CP 4 days so far.  CP may have a better portfolio of rides and coasters, but KI is leagues better than CP in the food dept.  Panda Express at KI really knocks things out of the park, while at CP they were probably the worst meal I had during my visits.  I miss Skyline and the old burrito place at CP.  I need to find out what's at the Brewhouse on the Dining plan as I couldn't find that info ANYWHERE.  Also, need to give the new Chicken Shack sandwich a whirl.

Was provisions open this year at Cedar Point? The restaurant that is tucked way back in forbidden frontier? Of all the meals at al the Cedar Fair parks, this is my favorite.

  3. Got these today.

They offered jalapeños and I should have said yes... alright I assumed they were canned jalapeños so I typically just declined.

There was a TON of food, and the first half was good... but it was a bit bland to really enjoy it. I’d maybe get it again to split... and I’d probably get it without the nacho cheese and with jalapeños, but overall glad I tried it 06cc4cf3a5c65a5b3c2e30546ac44510.jpg

  4. Ehhh having it now. Maybe I’m not a big duck person,  but it seemed overcooked. Peppers were ok. Nice seeing different things though. Figure might love some, might not, but if park sees these specials moving may be willing to try more. This must’ve been a quick add. No signage saying what the “special” even was. Feel like they’ve tried more things this year. Maybe smaller crowds makes the gamble less.

    We’re either on dining plan?
Any indication on if it was today only or if it will be there tomorrow?

  5. P&G has been very committed to keeping their employees safe. They were one of the first companies in Cincinnati to encourage employees to with from home, have started mask making and hand sanitizer operations to distribute to employees, etc.

I’m sure the idea of all of that effort to ensure safety and not even come into the office unless critical, didn’t line up with the idea of bringing their entire Cincinnati based employee population to one location. The business risk if an outbreak occurred would just be too great.

  6. Citing their commitment to employee safety and their belief that gathering at KI was not a workable solution in light of COVID the company has canceled the annual event which has been at Kings Island since 1972.

The event is typically a Saturday and Sunday buyout in mid September between the regular season and start of haunt.

  7. It’s been great. I feel the park has been enforcing their COVID policies well. When guests try to circumvent the rules, the staff respond in a courteous and professional manner.

I saw that in the midway. But then saw the guests just go right back to pulling off their mask once security left.

And in the line cue wearing of the masks and maintaining distance was terrible.

Ultimately, if it’s important to you (it is to me, you probably just shouldn’t go... I know I’ve stopped).
Likewise, I’m still waiting for a day when KI actually starts to remove guests for policy violations.

For example, I’m really glad they moved the smoking areas, because previous seasons I rarely ever seen employees confront those smoking outside of the smoking area, and never seen a guest removed from the park for smoking. Even now I still see guests using e cigs in the park and staff ignoring it. And unlike other parks (Canada wonderland) that have lots of signs posted about line jumping or prohibiting saving spots in line for others, I’ve never seen a staff member confront a guest for line jumping.

Net: it’s become clear to me the KI is doing what they must to remain open by the state... but until they show that they will remove violators for intentional violations they certainly aren’t leading the way at promoting mask wearing for businesses. And I understand that’s a choice they are allowed to make... and me not returning is my choice.

  8. KI has done an excellent job imo. People adhere to the social distancing markers and almost all of the guests are wearing masks. Employees have been quick to enforce social distancing and mask policies.

This seemed true this first two weeks.
    But it’s sliding downhill fast.
At this point I won’t return until zero tolerance policy is adopted and I actually hear that someone is removed from the park or a line for not following policy. (Ie other than warnings, I think guests that don’t care about the policy are starting to realize that there is no consequence for not following it)

  9. Since some $21.99ers have been introduced into the mix, mask compliance as well as social distancing was at its worst so far this season. In FOF there was a family that was so close to my party that it would have been rude even without the pandemic. They also had their masks pulled down below their chins. An employee saw them several times and didn’t say anything. Later in the station they still had their masks down and were sitting on the handrails. The driver said on the loud speaker to not sit on the handrail, but said nothing of the masks, which was disappointing.  Let’s hope this was isolated incident.

As I commented above, I agree with you... compliance is dropping and enforcement (especially in the line cue) isn’t keeping up.

If you’re coming from Michigan, you’ll likely be disappointed as I believe people in Michigan are following orders/protocols better than people in Ohio are.

  11. Every season I give Hanks 1 shot to see if it is better.  Yesterday was my 1 shot for the season.  I swear that the rice at Chipotle has more seasoning than the chicken at Hanks.

Your review inspired me to make Hanks my dinner tonight and get my “once a season shot”.

    Got a steak burrito.
    Tortilla was cold.
Rice wasn’t fully cooked (some pieces were hard)

    Steak was flavorful
Guacamole was included and was good.

If I returned I’d probably just get those two items in a bowl. It wouldn’t be as filling, but it would be tasty.

  12. Had my third visit tonight. Providing this observation as a “heads up” for anyone who is on the fence about coming during COVID.

Pro: I saw more employees and most security guards confronting those not wearing masks and asking them to put them on correctly.

Con: I saw A LOT more guests this visit not wearing masks, removing masks in line, removing masks on rides, leaving their nose uncovered, not wearing a mask at all. (Which is probably why KI staff is more active than one noticed on past visits about confronting those in the midway). Also noticed a lot more masks with the breather port (which I guess protects the wearer, but doesn’t protect everyone else from their exhale... but at least they were probably trying to follow the rules)

I’m not sure if the complacency of passholders is starting to come out now that we’re on week 3... or if the opening to non season pass holders are to blame or why it seems so drastically different. But my first two visits I left feeling confident that the park was safe. Now I’m hesitant to come back for visit #4.
