Dick's Last Resort Coming to The Levee

Recommended Posts

Sounds like nightlife at The Levee is about to get more interesting...

Note that the article says that employees must "audition" and that training staff will "teach employees how to behave". Wikipedia says the chain is "known for its intentional employment of obnoxious staff". The chain's website says that they're "The Joint Yer Mama Warned You About".

Yes! I love this place! I went to the one in Chicago. The food is alright, but it's one hilarious experience! My mom and I didn't know what it was, and when we got in, the host stared us down and said, "what do you want?" Then when he asked us for drinks, I said water (I don't like soda)...he made fun of me and when he came back with a glass of water, on the side written in marker, in quotations, was "water". The waiters are really mean and funny...what a weird experience it was.

Like I said though, the food was OK. I don't really think that's the point of the restaurant, though.

There is one of these in Myrtle Beach. I've heard lots of stories about the place, but I've never been. The thing that gets people the most is watching the guests that are eating there seemingly without knowing what kind of place it is.

I would not go to this place. I've known people who have gone to one in Chicago. They were not impressed with the atmosphere or quality of food. They said they were over the top rude (and they knew this was to be expected at this establishment) and the food was barely mediocre.

I don't see humor on being insulted while spending my hard earned money. I also think it teeters on a bully mentality. I guess some people enjoy it since they have been in business several years. I just don't get it.

Guaranteed I would not find it funny, enjoyable or think "wow this is a great time". I've had occasions in my life where I have been belittled, put down and ridiculed. I refuse to willingly put myself into that atmosphere. I strongly prefer a much more positive environment.

I prefer atmosphere like Claddagh Irish Pub at Newport on the Levee. The bar area is a traditional pub, and they have several "rooms". One is a bank-like room with another being a Celtic church. One winter we sat in the bar and listened to a Celtic band. Seems like there was a fireplace there too. It was so relaxing and was a great time.

^ Easier to say than "Irish wristwatch".

I guess I'm enough of a weirdo to kind of want to try this once. The thing I don't get is what anyone means by "rude". Like, are these people actually making personal attacks, or are they just extraordinarily grumpy? I've dealt with enough grumpy people during my stint in retail work that I find most petty/grumpy attitudes really amusing, so this could be something perfect for me to try every once in a while. I could even laugh off name-calling if that's part of the deal. What all is entailed in the "rude" act?

On that note, now I know why I've walked by restaurants with people laughing and wearing white paper hats with insults written on them. I always thought that was just some game people played at parties!

Yea as Jdawg said it is more of a grumpy "I do not want to be here" attitude than personal attacks. They poke fun at you but certainly not personal attacks about your character or anything like that. The worst I heard was making fun of someone clothes, which to me is good fun and silly. I enjoyed myself there but must say the atmosphere is the only selling point (if you are into it) because for the price there is mich better food elsewhere.

I've never been, my sister has. She says the food is overpriced, but it's whatever. She never said that the servers attack people personally.

I've seen several friends go to one and post pictures of their fun.

This pic is a friend on her vacation in Tennessee.

This is what Dick's describes the experience like: From rug-rats to old farts, from high-class to no-class, from the top of the food chain to the bottom of the barrel, it's fun for all and all in fun for those who dare to enter! Sit back and watch or join in the fun. Dick's has always been known for its outrageous, surly, energetic waitstaff who inflict humor upon our guests. Our atmosphere makes everyone feel like they're temporarily breaking all the rules...and getting away with it.

I think a lot of people are putting the word "insult" out there, because they are uncomfortable with this type of humor. I get that people have reservations about people poking fun at them, I have had reservations for years, but I learned that if I don't laugh at some of the things I do or believe, someone still is. The thing about Dick's Resort that I've understood as the biggest "insult" is the hats.....they write something on there about you, it can be so extremely far off that it doesn't make sense for you...but here's the thing, the servers don't know you at all...they don't know your life or issues, so why not laugh?

Google Image Search Dick's Last Resort, some may be a bit inappropriate, but overall they're pretty humorous IMHO. Either way, I'm happy that a new business is coming to Newport and hope that many here will at least give it a try.

Dick's Last Resort is a fun place to go for a group of friends or coworkers. You have to be able to laugh at yourself to enjoy the experience though!

I was in Chicago for a trade show about 4 years ago, and a big group of us decided to check it out. I work for an Italian company, and we have a plant in Austria, so there were Americans, Austrians, and Italians in our group of about 20 people. All but one of the Italians left after the server's first visit to our table. They were completely ticked off. The Austrians (I think there were 3 or 4 of them) all LOVED the place and didn't want to go anywhere else for the rest of the show.

Also stopped at the one in Gatlinburg with the wife and kids a couple of years ago, and the kids still talk about it...they had a blast!

The food is at best mediocre, but I personally have a great time eating there. I think it'll be good for the area, and I know once my kids find out it's there, we'll have to go!

I have been to Dick's once and it was in Cleveland before it closed. I was a youngin but I still remember it. Not many other places I remember eating at on vacations when I was a kiddo. Most likely we will probably go as a fun nostalgia thing with the family but I cant see my family going often. From what I remember it was fun to eat their. Cant comment about the food.

I have learned that YELP and other review sites are good but not great. Same thing with reviews on products. Most people who comment on something are either super upset or super happy about an experience. Those that are in the middle rarely comment and recommend dont recommend a place..

It will be interesting to see how long this place lasts. Jeff Ruby's Tropicana, which originally occupied that spot, was huge. Eric Deters' Bulldog's seemed popular enough but didn't last long (not entirely sure why). I've heard that the rent for that spot was $10k a month, but with new management since then (the former manager resigned and was last seen managing Bridgewater Falls near Hamilton), things may have changed. As far as "finally" something new - there have been other new venues at the Levee recently. A new dance club called Flashbacks recently opened in the space originally occupied by Shadowbox (and later by a teen club called Blast), and a new bar and grill called River Rock opened last month in the space once occupied by Jefferson Hall (and briefly by the highly-touted Kentucky Bourbon bar called The Still, which suddenly closed in October). Also, a small sandwich shop called Petra Cuisine opened last year in the space once occupied by Smoothie King (serving gyros and similar items, and baklava for dessert). Things are slowly improving
