Columbus Zoo welcomes baby Caribbean Flamingos

Recommended Posts

They might not be pink yet, but say hello to our new Caribbean flamingo chicks that hatched last week! They will be on display every day from 1 to 2 p.m. so stop by and welcome our new flamingo friends!

Also, an interesting article about how the zoo "tricks" the birds with fake eggs and nests:

The eggs balancing on volcanolike mounds at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's flamingo yard most likely are fake.

But the fuzzy little flamingo chicks on display beginning today are as real as they come. Less than a week old, the three birds have zookeepers abuzz.

"We're very excited about it," Carrie Pratt, assistant curator of the Shores Region at the zoo, said yesterday. "We want to get them out as quickly as we can to exercise and keep their legs strong."

The zoo had no luck producing flamingo chicks until 2002. That year, the first one hatched. Two more hatched in 2007, one in 2008 and three in 2010.

Also, of note... the Zoo actually has 2 different troupes of Flamingos: Their Caribbean Flamingos can be found in the Zoo's "Shores" region, with an exhibit shared with American Alligators (though the 2 are kept apart by a glass barrier):

Their group of Chilean Flamingos, under the care of the Zoo's promotions and public relations department, live at the Animal Encounters Village in Jungle Jack's Landing. These are available for guests (including children) to meet and touch!
