House
Would it be worth a drive down to SF: OG? I've never been there before, I also noticed that Kentucky Kingdom opens next weekend. Would it be worth it to just wait and go to KK instead of OG? If I went, what Roller Coasters do I need to go on first to avoid huge lines? Also is there affordable lodging nearby? It's an 8+ hour drive from Indy, so unless I sleep in my car, I will need to stay over night.
Shaggy
Kentucky Kingdom is not open next weekend. http://www.sixflags.com/kentuckykingdom/info/parkInfo.aspx
House
Lol oops I was looking at the wrong month. so anyways, is a drive to OG worth it? That's pretty far.
DropZone99
In my opinion, Yes. I would drive 8 hours to ride an amazing B&M Hyper, a classic Schwarzkopf looper, an intense B&M Invert, and the best Standup.
Cameron
This is just my two cents. Would you drive eight hours to Six Flags Over Georgia to be horribly disappointed? I don't think you would want to. On this past Sunday, I went. Rain policy is that all rides close if there is heavy rain, lightning, or high winds. It was very, very lightly sprinkling out. Not one coaster or flat ride was open and they closed the whole park at noon, with no warning at all and no refund. We tried to get our refund, but we were escorted out of the park by the security and treated extremely rudely by numerous employees. Take my advice. It's not worth it... tubaman
Well, I say it is very very worth it. The coasters are amazing, people were friendly and the atmosphere could not be beat. It is a beautiful park! I'm sorry to hear that Cameron had a bad trip, but I had a wonderful time.

Which is in sharp contrast to other reviews I've seen from this year. I say go for it, it's a great park with great coasters as mentioned earlier. I would however suggest spend a little extra time and go to the GA Aquarium or possibly a side trip to Lake Winnie (though not sure if the Lake is open yet). Touchdown
Plus Im guessing that, Dollywood, Kennywood, Cedar Point, SFGAm, and Hersheypark are all closer. SFOG is a great park, but so are all of those listed in the other sentence and they are closer (and some even so much closer that you would save in gas enough to buy a one day ticket and still come out ahead.) crazypkikid2005
I think its definatly worth it as it is a great park but all the parks listed above are good too especially dollywood. You can actually read my trip report from SF:OG here it should be helpful.
The Interpreter
Six Flags Over Georgia is well worth the trip, in my humble opinion. The Georgia Cyclone is world class, Goliath is perhaps the second (soon to be third?) best B & M hypercoaster in the USA, Acrophobia is...uh...a unique stand-up drop ride, the park is beautifully landscaped, Mindbender is simply incredible, the people who go to the park are, for the most part, wonderful people to spend a day with...do avoid parking in any lot not owned by the park, and do not stay at the hotels at the Interstate exit where the park is. Other than that, you will have a great time.

I have no idea where Kennywood is, or know anything at all about it. I was wanting to go this weekend. Are there any parks closer to Indianapolis open yet? gad198
^ To answer your park opening question, in order of earliest park opening to latest: March 28: Dollywood March 28: Six Flags St. Louis April 3: Six Flags Great America April 18: Kings Island April 25: Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom May 2: Indiana Beach May 2: Holiday World May 16: Cedar Point
House
Which of these parks has better roller coasters? March 28: Dollywood March 28: Six Flags St. Louis
gad198
^ It all depends on who you're asking. There are a few more coasters at Six Flags StL, but I think Dollywood is the better park overall. If you simply want the "credits" then I'd go to Six Flags, but if you want a better park experience, I'd go to Dollywood. Thunderhead alone is worth the trip, and the Smokies are wonderful this time of year! Have a good time whichever way you go!
House
I think I'm going to go ahead and drive down to Georgia this weekend. Do you guys have any tips for the park? I hope the crowds wont' be too bad. How is the surrounding neighborhood? I've heard people say its not the nicest of areas, is this true? I've never been to an amusement park by myself, or driven this far by myself either, so I'm kind of nervous about it. I'm dying to go on a roller coaster though! violakat03
I went to SFOG in 2006. It was absolutely amazing and I'd say totally worth the drive. Do not stay at the hotels that are on the same exit - I took this advice, luckily. Every time I go to Atlanta I stay at the Microtel next to the airport. It is a very clean hotel, seemed pretty safe, and is a very good price. I've stayed at it three times and had a great experience each time. I think it took 15 or 20 minutes to get to the park from that hotel. As for the park itself, park in the park's lot and just suck it up and pay the fee. You're likely to not have a car anymore if you use one of the shady lots. When you get there, if it's crowded, get a FlashPass, if it's not, don't bother. Definitely make sure you hit Goliath, Georgia Scorcher and Superman: Ultimate Flight. I rode everything there and those three were my favorites. Mindbender, Georgia Cyclone and Great American Scream Machine are great. The drive down isn't all that bad, but you may consider breaking it into two days and staying in TN one night. I don't know how long you'll have available for the trip though. If you take 75 down through Kentucky and Tennessee, it's a beautiful drive. Knoxville and Chattanooga are both nice cities for a pit stop. I can even recommend a hotel in Knoxville if you decide to stay there, I've been there many times through the year. I'd consider the possibility of waiting until next weekend (28th) and hitting SFOG and Dollywood in the same weekend. Or staying two days at SFOG. You can buy a second day ticket at the park for $15. That's what we did when we got rained out the first day of our trip, and the second day we got everything that we hadn't gotten the day before. Using the Flash Pass, we hit Goliath, Georgia Scorcher, Batman and Mindbender in 2 hours.
dare-to-fly
I'd consider the possibility of waiting until next weekend (28th) and hitting SFOG and Dollywood in the same weekend. Now you have reached my plan. I'll be doing just that, but because ACE's Spring Fling is on the 28th. Dollywood is just on my way back. The drive down isn't all that bad, but you may consider breaking it into two days and staying in TN one night. It's only an 8-ish hour trip. Why bother to split it? Then again, I never break my trips into pieces anyway and your level of tolerance for being on the road may be very different.
violakat03
Only 8 hours? I was thinking it was longer than that. Well, that's not bad at all - less than it takes to get to Memphis, actually! Definitely a one day's drive. I've never driven just to Atlanta from Ohio. When we went, we came from North Carolina and returned to Memphis. dare-to-fly
Understandable. House is from Indy, and I'm not far from there. It can't be much different for me. It isn't as far as you might think depending on the direction of travel, amount of time you spend piddling, and how much of a lead foot/slow poke you are. UnrealNightmare
I'll be heading down there on my way to Florida this summer. I'm hoping it's well worth the stop on the way. We also may be throwing Dollywood back into our trip.
House
I've driven straight from to Orlando and back without breaking it up an 8 hour drive is no big deal. I've just never done it by myself. The park opens at 10, so do the gates open at 9? Do they have ropes up like at KI, or can you go in and walk around like at CP?
