Yesterday I visited the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens! I am on Spring Break, so look forward to more from me over the next 5 days! Today is looking rainy, maybe a Museum Center PTR?

DSC01561.jpg

At about 1:30 when we left, the weather was cloudy and a band of light rain was passing through. We made the decision to head out, thinking that we could squeeze in a few hours.

DSC01562.jpg

The famous Jeep! Can you believe this is 12 years old!!!

DSC01563.jpg

It wasn't long after we headed out that we experienced the first of many traffic problems

DSC01564.jpg

Yepp, a stalled car on our exit.

DSC01565.jpg

After about 15-20 minutes navigating through the run-down area around the zoo, we finally found the vehicular entrance.

DSC01566.jpg

Me? I haven't visited the Cincinnati Zoo since 2007. In fact, I haven't visited any zoo in over a year! The last time was Spring Break 2008, and that was the St. Louis Zoo.

DSC01567.jpg

The entrance seemed as inviting as I remembered it.

DSC01568.jpg

After climbing up one of the many hills the Zoo covers (This one happened to contain the main entry area), we crossed the Train Tracks. I remember them being a lot bigger....

DSC01569.jpg

First off on our list was Trooper Mom's (Who wasn't available for this trip, currently working at the heavily male-gendered Danis Cooperation in Dayton) favorite,

DSC01570.jpg

The Adorable Red Panda.

DSC01571.jpg

Does this look familiar to any KI Addicts? It's not a Canadian Goose, but still....

DSC01572.jpg

Pea**** ahead!

DSC01573.jpg

And then there were the penguins....

DSC01574.jpg

Sure, it's a step-down from the amazing Penguin habitat in St. Louis,

DSC01575.jpg

But it ain't too bad.

DSC01576.jpg

This particular Pea****, one of many roaming freely through the zoo, was bent on shopping in the closed gift shop.

DSC01577.jpg

Lions and Tigers and Bears!

DSC01578.jpg

You can find 'em all at the Cincinnati Zoo!

DSC01579.jpg

Don't be fooled by how cute they looked in the Wizard of Oz, these guys are fearsome!

DSC01580.jpg

How about the Spectacled Bear?

DSC01581.jpg

Nope, not much out of him either...

DSC01582.jpg

Here's something we should get some action out of!

DSC01583.jpg

The majestic Polar Bears!

DSC01584.jpg

These guys were up and moving around!

DSC01585.jpg

One of them was even putting on a swimming display for us!

DSC01586.jpg

He would swim up, do a 180, swim down, and do a presentation for the viewers underneath the water.

DSC01587.jpg

These viewers!

DSC01589.jpg

He looked so at home in the water!

DSC01590.jpg

Why, what's over here?

DSC01591.jpg

If it isn't the amazing Bald Eagle!

DSC01592.jpg

Apparently, this Eagle Named Rachel had a pretty rough past.

DSC01593.jpg

The Bald Eagle is one cool bird, and boy is it big!

DSC01597.jpg

Next up, the White Lions!

DSC01594.jpg

Lions, Tigers, and Bears, oh my!

DSC01596.jpg

What a ferocious Kingdom you have, oh lion.

DSC01595.jpg

Lions sleep 23/24 hours of the day!

DSC01598.jpg

So there is only a 1/24 chance we catch them awake.

DSC01599.jpg

Ohh yea, time for my favorite exhibit in the entire zoo.

DSC01600.jpg

Why is it my favorite? The answer is right here.

DSC01602.jpg

The Manatee exhibit has 2 sections, this greenhouse type exhibit for Crocs and Gators and whatnot, and an indoor exhibit for animals like snakes, fish, and of course, manatees. As soon as I stepped into this part, I could feel the heat and humidity hit me like a wave, which is a good thing, because I am a sucker for anything involved with Florida, even the weather.

DSC01601.jpg

Oooooo, a gator!

DSC01604.jpg

Turtle Turtle Turtle! [/master of disguise moment]

DSC01605.jpg

This is a croc, if I'm not mistaken.

DSC01606.jpg

What a shame!

DSC01607.jpg

When you step into the indoor exhibit you are first greeted with this fish tank. Featuring, you guessed it, fish.

DSC01608.jpg

Hey, and a 150 year old turtle.

DSC01609.jpg

Decor like this is scattered throughout the area.

DSC01610.jpg

There is a large viewing area for the manatees.

DSC01611.jpg

But like most other animals today, they do not wish to be disturbed.

DSC01612.jpg

These fish, however, look to be open for viewing!

DSC01613.jpg

Ohh, bubble!

DSC01614.jpg

I like bubbles because they give you an up-close view of things.

DSC01615.jpg

Now THATS a fish.

DSC01616.jpg

The manatees were balled up in a corner playing with a basket.

DSC01617.jpg

What do we have here? A large assortment of fish, and a reflection of me, in my Kentucky Rumbler shirt.

DSC01618.jpg

Have you ever seen a real live parahna? Well, this is what they look like.

DSC01619.jpg

Did someone say Florida?

DSC01620.jpg

Like I said, anything Florida, I'm there.

DSC01621.jpg

Big Turtles

DSC01622.jpg

This is the skeleton of a manatee

DSC01623.jpg

That's a big snake!

DSC01625.jpg

One of my favorite authors, Carl Hiaasen, prefers to write his books here. Me? I am in love with the Space Coast.

DSC01626.jpg

Do you see him?

DSC01627.jpg

How about now?

DSC01628.jpg

I'm gonna take a picture like that one day.

DSC01629.jpg

I actually have that picture in my room. It's the full Earth, taken by Apollo 17.

DSC01630.jpg

Ohh god, I think I'm thirsty.

DSC01631.jpg

Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!

DSC01632.jpg

Umm, no tigers here, just an impact crater  .....

DSC01633.jpg

Now Here's a Tiger!

DSC01634.jpg

And 2 Cheetahs...

DSC01635.jpg

Apparently it's feeding time!

DSC01636.jpg

This guy doesn't look to happy, maybe its because the people are cleaning the exhibit during his meal?

DSC01638.jpg

It's Not an Albino....

DSC01637.jpg

Its a white tiger. Coooool.

DSC01639.jpg

One of the many horrible hills you must climb at the Zoo.

DSC01640.jpg

The Lemurs are one of many no-shows today.

DSC01642.jpg

Time for the Nocturnal House. No flash, some of the pictures are hard to see.

DSC01643.jpg

Can you see it? Neither can I.

DSC01644.jpg

Vampire Bats!

DSC01645.jpg

A...umm....I don't know what that is.

DSC01646.jpg

Sorry these are coming out blurry

DSC01647.jpg

I don't know what that is, but boy is it cute!

DSC01648.jpg

That is an Armadillo, folks.

DSC01652.jpg

The Insect House. Oh God No.

DSC01653.jpg

If there is one thing I can't stand, it's insects...

DSC01654.jpg

Or spiders

DSC01655.jpg

Or scorpions

DSC01656.jpg

Or roaches

DSC01658.jpg

Ants aren't too bad.

DSC01660.jpg

Whoever thought Mantis was a bad name for the roller coaster, they were wrong.

DSC01661.jpg

That, my friends, is a naked Mole Rat.

DSC01662.jpg

Bullet Ants

DSC01663.jpg

Known for their blindingly painful sting.

DSC01664.jpg

Here is my dad (The guy in the green) in the Butterfly house.

DSC01665.jpg

The cat house? I'm allergic to cats!

DSC01666.jpg

Well, not if they're balled up in a log, I'm not.

DSC01668.jpg

The desert!

DSC01669.jpg

This cat must be worried

DSC01670.jpg

He was pacing non-stop

DSC01671.jpg

This guy was pacing too.

DSC01672.jpg

This guy was just plain hyperactive

DSC01673.jpg

I am the king of the Exhibits!

DSC01674.jpg

This guy was staring into the painted wall

DSC01675.jpg

Awww, how adorable!

DSC01676.jpg

Pacing Freaks Unite!

DSC01678.jpg

How pretty

DSC01680-1.jpg

Time for the Gorillas. Joe! For the last time, you are a Monkey, not a Gorilla!

DSC01681-1.jpg

We got there just in time for feeding!

DSC01684-1.jpg

The gorillas actually just sat there and caught the carrots being thrown to them!

DSC01688-1.jpg

They then casually sat down and ate them with their hands, looking normally at us as if we were the ones in the exhibit!

DSC01685-1.jpg

Whoever said Gorillas were stupid is gravely mistaken.

DSC01691-1.jpg

Hey look, baboons!

DSC01692-1.jpg

Time to see some rhinos!

DSC01693-1.jpg

Ok, we stopped to look at this guy.

DSC01694-1.jpg

And this dude, whatever he is.

DSC01695-1.jpg

Rhino!

DSC01696-1.jpg

This rhino was about 2.5' tall, most like him grow to be about 5 feet!

DSC01697-1.jpg

The reptile house!

DSC01698-1.jpg

Featuring Lizards,

DSC01699-1.jpg

Snakes,

DSC01700-1.jpg

And Gila Monsters Galore!

DSC01701-1.jpg

This is a Python

DSC01703-1.jpg

What's so special about this guy?

DSC01702-1.jpg

He's Got 2 coasters named after him!

DSC01704-1.jpg

I just saved 15% on my car insurance!

DSC01705-1.jpg

The Famous King Cobra

DSC01706-1.jpg

If you can't see him, he's doing his job well.

DSC01707-1.jpg

We then headed to the car to go home. The only problem, there are too many hills!

DSC01708-1.jpg

Finally we found our way to the entrance.

DSC01709-1.jpg

Now just a leisurely drive home, right?

DSC01710-1.jpg

Wrong! Can you say, an hour of traffic on I-75? Don't worry, we made it home ok.

That's all For now! Thanks for Reading!

Oooooo, a gator!

XGatorHead 8904 would just like to state for the record that this is not a picture of him. XGatorHead 8904's skin is much less bumpy, less dry, and less green than the guy in this picture.

Anyway, nice PTR, Jackson! We love the Cincinnati Zoo. We go every year in August during their half price weekend. Of course, with the temperature the way it was yesterday, you probably had a much more comfortable visit than we usually do!
