Death At Disney World

Recommended Posts

wow, a death happens and an attraction is down for one day, and then a burst blood vessel and a ride is still down from almost a month ago.

Well, they pretty much know what caused the accident at Disnney. They don't know what happened on SOB and SOB has had problems in the past where as the monorail hasn't.

I am really very surprised that this happened especially at a park such as Disney World. But I guess it's one of those freak accidents that can happen at anytime anyplace. My condolences go out to the employee and his family.

In regards to the differences between the SOB accident and the Monorail accident, one of the major differences is the standardization of amusement park and transportation protocol in Florida. The only reason why the Dept. of Agriculture gets involved in OH, is because the department is somewhat of a catch all, considering there is no other department. In Florida, due to the huge number and magnitude of amusement enterprises, they have the Dept. of Tourism, Dept. of Agriculture, and other specialized departments, solely for amusement rides, parks, and attractions.

However, on that same note of different departments, because Disney receives government grants for their buses, monorails, ferries, resort launches, etc. they are considered public transportation, NOT amusement rides or attractions. Because of this, any investigation is done through the Dept. of Transportation. It would be the same as if a city bus was in an accident or if a subway ran off the tracks. Also like it was said before, with the monorail's, it was probably considerably less difficult to determine what happened to cause the accident, where SOB; who knows? Once it is known, its the difference in ensuring the safety system is debugged. On SOB it's the difference between running the block tests in the morning, and re-tracking the ride.

I was at Walt Disney World from June 30th until July seventh (Just got home) for my 21st Birthday Celebration. It was so surreal being at Hollywood Studios at 12AM and seeing everyone around from the Cincinnati,OH area look at their phone for a text from a loved one or friend back home. The noon news on channel 12 flashed the monorail news and within a few minute window, I think nearly everyone from the area who had a loved one watching the news was texted or called. We had just gotten out of Indiana Jones and were standing on the midway when phones rang around us...then my phone rang...a friend texted me asking about the monorail. It was such a weird coincidence on the day after.

Over the next couple of days I can say that I have never seen so many news helicopters fly above WDW trying to get the scoop.

Anyways, in a note to Disney Employees it was stressed that Track switch sensors monitoring the track switch position near the entrance to the "spur" at the Ticket and Transportation Center were replaced. Hopefully an accident like this never occurs again!
