Cedar Point Ridership

Recommended Posts

I was just browsing the Cedar Point website for my upcoming trip next week and noticed some cool information on their pages of all of their coasters. They have a column called Ridership which shows the amount of rides given in any given year since it opened. I thought this was pretty cool and really wish Kings Island would add this to their websites. I also noticed something strange about the numbers and wondered if anyone here could give me their two cents. Here is an example of one of the coaster pages. http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/park/ride...aptor/index.cfm

If you scroll down you can see the Ridership column. Here is what I noticed. On all of the coasters, the year of 2007 has a much noticeable decrease in riders than the previous years and then in 2008 the number seems to rise back up. For example, Raptor shows 2006: 1,645,189 and then 2007: 1,421,255. And then in 2008: 1,609,503. Did something happen that I am unaware of in 2007 that caused this? It seems to be the same effect on all of the coasters. Well if there is something that is very obvious that I don't know, shame on me, but I thought this was a cool feature to have on the website and thought it would be fun to share to those of you who have not seen this yet.

I think in 2007 we had a fairly strong economy so people were taking vacations out of state. I'm betting park attendance dropped that year. Then in 2008 as the economy started slowing down, and especially this year, people went back to 'stay-cations' and started visiting their home attractions like Cedar Point and Kings Island. When they post ridership numbers for this year, I would not be at all surprised to see a big jump.

And the company as a whole seemed to be losing focus in 2007 as it struggled to incorporate the huge acquisition of Paramount Parks that it had made June 30, 2006. Many good people from the Point were moved elsewhere to help with the assimilation or were distracted with other pressing tasks in 2007.
