DragonLord
I’m not sure if every officer does this, but in the morning I always give some sort of a spiel at the rope to remind people of the rules and to give out some advice. Usually I start out with a nice big “Good Morning!†and wait for a response. If I’m not pleased I do it again after a (usually lame) joke about needing more coffee or caffeine or about the time of day. I always give a weather update and end with new rides (sometimes with stats), attractions, and directions to rides they might be waiting for. Anyway, below is a ruff outline of what I talk about… it usually takes me 5 minutes to say it all. I was just wondering what you think: Good Morning! Welcome to Paramount’s Kings Island! I hope you all have a wonderful day. I wanted to remind you all of some rules while you are in the park. There is no smoking in any of the ride lines! If you smoke, put it out before you get into a ride line. It is posted at the entrance to all of the rides, and you can be kicked out of the ride line for smoking, so please don’t do it. Also, there is no line jumping! Line jumping consists of any reason you get out of line and get back in line where you were at and not at the very end. You are not allowed to save places in line, not allowed to get out of line for food, drinks, or to use the restroom. If you are in line, stay in line until you are off the ride. If you are caught line jumping, you will be kicked out of the line and you can be kicked out of the park. Don’t do it! If you catch someone line jumping, make sure you can point them out to Security. You must be able to say “They did it†for us to anything about it. If you buy beer or any other alcoholic beverage in the park, you must keep it in the building or on the patio where you bought it. You are not allowed to walk around the park with any alcoholic beverages; we will make you throw it away! You are not allowed to transfer the alcohol to any other container than the one we give it to you in. If you are caught doing that, we will make you throw it away. Keep your clothes on! Shoes shirts and shorts are required in the park at all times. We will tell anyone walking around the park with no shirt to put on one. If you don’t have one, you will have to buy one. Just because you see someone else without a shirt on does not mean that you can take yours off. The exception is the water maze in Nickelodeon. You must have your cloths on while walking to and from the water park. The water park opens at 11am and is included in general admission. If you go to the water park there is no smoking allowed at all in the water park. You can get to the water park by walking on the path in the very back of Nickelodeon, or by riding the train from Rivertown. Water in the park is free! You can ask for a glass of ice or ice water at any of the food stands and it is free. A bottled water in the park is $2.75. If you ask for a glass of water it is free. Please drink lots of water! If you have a souvenir cup, they will fill that up with water for free as well. Again, please drink lots of water! Parents, if you have cell phone please make sure that your kids have the number. If you become separated from your kids it’s the easiest way for them to contact you. If you do become separated from your kids, tell an employee right away so that Security can be called, we have procedures for helping you find your kids. We do not page anyone in the park unless it’s a verified police or medical emergency so please do not ask us to page. You can put a message out for someone at Guest Relations under the Front Gate, in Lost Parents located in Hanna-Barberra, or at the kiosk under the tower. If you have any questions, feel free to ask

bingog34
Eh...I heard you do it by Action Zone a few months ago. I felt like you were scolding us for stuff before we did it...
BoddaH1994
Yeah, it does kind of have a "we're watching you" sound to it. Just make sure you end it on a positive note, and it'll be good.
DegenRider
Yeah but when you tell them everything there is no room for argument later on. Mostly he wants to be friendly give advice for 1st timers. The day I heard it there was a lot of 1st timers.
BoddaH1994
Oh, I totally agree that it should be done. Just make sure that it's got more of a "We're here to have fun, this is how we make sure everyone has fun" theme to it as opposed to a "While you're here, you WILL obey OUR rules" theme. They both get at the same points, but why have such a downer to start such a great day?
missdi
Sounds good to me. Just remember to end it on a positive note like BoddaH1994 recommended, maybe something like "I know this is alot to remember, but most of all don't forget to have a wonderful day here while visiting Paramounts Kings Island!" (then release the rope and watch 'em run).
Beastfreak
Too long to read... would loose my attention soon after starting anyways. Same if I were to hear you tell us. I don't wait at the ropes anymore anyways. I've got my ways around that.
DragonLord
lol A lot of people have ways around the ropes... the legal ways are the ACE walkbacks, the not so legal ways I won't mention but if caught be prepared to be charged with trespassing! Seriously, it's not fun to be on the wrong side of the ropes in the morning. I usually try to end with a "have a great day" and remind them how much time is left before I drop the rope. I also tell the people in the front that they are the ones that really need to walk because it will force the people behind them to walk as well... kinda like a pace car at a race. I also ask them to check their shoe laces because I have had people fall during the rush after the rope drops and it's not very fun. I have been in the middle of that as well and I was being pushed along by the crowd. I make everyone stay where they are at till I (and the rope) am out of the way. I know it sounds very frank and honest, but I don't like to sound too playful or not serious when I tell the rules. It's hard enough to tell how many people actually listen (or can hear me, I will get a bull horn, at least on the weekends) so I want to make sure everything is as clear as can be so there are no miscommunications. BoddaH1994
What kind of training do they give you to be security at PKI?
DragonLord
New officers go through a lot of training which mostly consists of watching a lot of training videos and completing tests. Officers also have to be certified in CPR and first aid by the American Red Cross or similar organization. The new officers are also put through simulations put on by returners and we have a group activities and sometimes one-on-one activities that put the new officers in positions that the returners have been in before. Before they are allowed in the park by themselves, they usually go through three or more days of field training where they are shadowed by a returner or Lead Officer. BoddaH1994
Do you guys strictly patrol the park during the regular season, or do you hold down the fort during the off season too?
DragonLord
Depends... Theme Park security is just there during the operating hours of the park, usually just from April till November. It sounds like a lot, but you have to remember that we are only opened weekends for a big part of that. Perimeter security is at the park 365 days a year 24 hours a day. Those positions are only for 10months. It's required to take 2 months off unless you happen to fall into the new year in which case you don't have to because the hours reset. RyanA
The people who got struck by lightning sued pki, pki did not sue them. And it was in the parking lot after the park was closed due to bad weather. I personally don't think it was pki's fault.

That reminds me, I was at PKI the other day getting my picture taken for the season pass. When the woman was done she said "That didint hurt, did it?" I said, "Oh yeah that hurt like hell." She laughed and said "Are you going to sue the park for that?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The man in the parking lot did sue, but it wasnt KI's fault. Beastfreak
What does that have to do with those people getting struck by lightning. Nothing. They don't want you past those ropes because there are still trucks driving around (possibly forklifts) and they can't see too well around corners, plus with people running (even though they are not supposed to) it could turn out to be pretty ugly. Its for you own safety.
BoddaH1994
Yeah, when we did the TR:TR filmings in June, we were in the park around 7:30 or so. There were semi-trucks pulling up to the resteraunts. Now, I know those driver's can't see much, plus I was impressed by the fact that they could even get the trucks back there. I remember thinking that it was thunder every time the truck would hit the bridge in Rivertown. So anyway, if you're behind the ropes, and a truck comes, a lot of times there's nowhere to go. About as retarded as people sueing the park for something they have no controle over. Yeah, I know people shouldn't cross the rope but charging them for trespassing is stupid. Kick them out of the park or something. Trespassing is a little harsh.
BoddaH1994
I agree with you trespassing is harsh. Then again, I'm sure they don't really want to charge people with it, they just need to set an example to show that they're serious.
Solid Snake
Good point. I don't think to many cross the ropes to start with.
DragonLord
Okay, sorry for the confusion, but you can be charged with trespassing. We would probably just kick you out the park, but it depends on what you were doing behind a rope. The big reason for the ropes is that we keep people out of the theme park while the deliveries are going on and while morning maintenance is being finished on the coasters and other rides. The risks are too high to have guests wondering around the park with semi trucks, forklifts, trucks and other things are in the park. If you are ever next to an officer about 10 minutes before the ropes are dropped, you will hear a tone that goes out to all the radios that asks for the park to be cleared of all vehicles. If there is still something in the park, we delay the ropes or we escort the vehicle out of the park. The one thing we really hate is for employees who have no buisness to be behind the ropes that go back there anyway. Some employees think they are smart and get by security just so they can be first in line for a ride. Big mistake... It's also a big mistake for employees to think they can ride early rides when we have Gold Pass Early Rides. Those employees are usually fired. An employee off the clock is just like a normal guests. That's why we are so strict about being in full uniform and (normally) check IDs while you cross the ropes. That's why we are such a pain when you say you have to go to a locker or have a meeting something. We don't want you behind a rope if you aren't supposed to be.
