Captain Picard
When I am down there I stay in Polk City and it didn't seem too bad to get to Cypress Gardens. I used to stay at Davenport and wasn't bad from there. It will be a wait and see thing on if it's going to work. If I remember correctly the last owner bought it for 16 million and couldn't make it. Now there are looking at investing 150 million. I think some of the problem was that there was nothing there to get anyone to go. If there was a Millennium Force or Diamondback there it would have had a better chance. There was enough money put into that park it could have had a nice coaster. Cory Butcher
Cypress Gardens will now have a modern identity. If the concept of a LegoLand Resort can take hold there is no reason the park cannot succeed. The Cypress Gardens at LegoLand Florida will keep the locals coming in for long walks, and the new innovative attractions will get tourists into the parks as well as the locals. I have been to Cypress Gardens a few times and did quite enjoy myself! I for one liked the Southern Belles however... I genuinely enjoyed just walking around the park with my family. My sister and I enjoyed the certain charm the place had as evidenced by this photo:

Well I agree on the wait and see thing and I also agree that there really wasn't much of a draw to the Park before, it really was mostly locals. As Cory pointed out, the Park will now have an identity and one that people (no matter what age) are going to recognize. Like I said, its going to come down to the right marketing for the park and offering the right services to guests. I think they'll make it work. As for the roads, I still think its going to be an issue at some point. Yeah, I found it frustrating to get to Cypress.....and thats with hardly ANY traffic. If this park turns out to be a big success and ends up pulling 2-3 million guests a year (or more) then those local roads are going to end up being quite packed and make it even more of a chore to get into and out of the Park. Obviously the investment that Merlin is dropping into the place is going to make it *worth* the trip out there and I think that will help make it easier for them to convince people to leave the Disney/Universal/SeaWorld mecca ;-) - Todd
The Interpreter
Some are already contemplating the road issue, which is serious: ... However, I feel a vital part of the success for the park would be to have a highway that would link Cypress Gardens Boulevard to the greater Orlando area.If you look at satellite maps provided by online search engines, you can see that it would be relatively easy to extend State Road 429 to the intersection of Cypress Gardens Boulevard and U.S. 27. I would propose that the extension of SR 429 to run parallel of U.S. 27 to the east of that road. SR 429 links up with Interstate 4 and has western entrance into Walt Disney World. Upon completion, tourists could travel from Disney to Winter Haven in about 30 minutes. Polk County should work with the Florida Turnpike Commission to make the extension of SR 429 a reality. Dieseltech20
Sad to see that roller coaster is being torn down. Wonder if someone will buy it or not? There are a lot of Parks in FL I am noticing. Maybe having to move down there won't be such a bad thing.
