CNN has some graphic video of the tornado aftermath. There is video of a tractor-trailer lot that looks like a kid's Matchbox truck.

I'm no meteorologist, but by what I can remember from Earth Science and Ecology, they probably inversely related, as to say one didn't cause the other, but both are being caused by the same thing. The Northern Jet stream that usually sits right over Indiana/Michigan/Ohio, and fluctuates north and south that usually brings down cooler temperatures during the winter from Canada, hasn't moved south of the border much at all this year. Not only did this create the unseasonably warm temperatures this year (and the great lakes not to have any signification freezing) but has also allowed the Warm air from the Gulf of Mexico that causes a lot of these storms to penetrate deeper into the United States, causing for more and stronger storms.

Like I said, I could be way off, but that's just what I remember from when we were studying weather patterns in college

I have lived in Erie, PA my entire life and there has never been a more mild winter.

We have Erie Bay, which is a natural bay protected by Presque Isle (a peninsula) that always freezes (due to how shallow it is compared to Lake Erie) until this year. There was zero ice. (I also only used my snowblower twice this winter whereas I usually use it at least twice before Thanksgiving)

The lake temperature never went below 32, and is currently much warmer than usual- meaning those wanting to head to CP in May will notice a warmer Point (unless the overall temperature is low).

It will be intresting to see if the current warm trend continues this summer.
