Man injures leg on Tokyo DisneySea Park ride

A man sustained a minor injury to his right leg at the Tokyo DisneySea Park resort in Chiba Prefecture, when a ride malfunctioned, park officials said Tuesday.

The 34-year-old man from Hokkaido was on the Raging Spirits rollercoaster ride on Monday night when the ride’s safety bar raised. Although the ride was in motion, the man later told park operators he felt unsafe and tried to get out of the car, at which point his leg was injured, Fuji TV reported.

Park operators say the ride is to be closed until further notice.

A 34-year-old man was injured May 28 while struggling to get out of the Raging Spirits" roller-coaster ride at Tokyo DisneySea after the ride started moving without his safety bar in place.

The man from Obihiro, Hokkaido, sustained minor injuries including a leg injury expected to require two weeks' treatment when he fell onto the ride's rails, police said. The roller coaster, which travels through a high-speed 360 degree loop, came to an emergency stop after moving several meters ahead of the man during the incident at around 4:10 p.m. on May 28, police said. Investigators at Urayasu Police Station in Chiba Prefecture are questioning the people concerned, suspecting professional negligence resulting in bodily injury.

According to Urayasu Police Station and Oriental Land Co., the operator of Tokyo DisneySea, the ride's shoulder bars are supposed to be pulled down securely over each seat, and staff members are supposed to check them before the roller coaster starts moving. Following the incident, Oriental Land Co. announced the same day that it would suspend the operation of the attraction for the time being.
