It sure seems to exist primarily to appease regulators and insurers, yet the process to use it to evacuate a fully-loaded gondola would seem to be so long and drawn out as to still draw criticism.

I said that seems to be the intention, but yes, they are self-insured.  It's hard to fathom another reason, since it was the unit at Knott's that really triggered their design and delivery, and that one was relocated.

*Actually, that is not true.  They can say whatever they want, but intentionally providing falsified information to shareholders is a great way to secure a visit with SEC investigators.
