Canada's Wonderland To Test Automate Parking Access for Season Passholders

Featured Replies

Automated Parking Access Season Passholders with an All Season Long Parking Pass can now get quicker access through the parking tolls. All Passholders that have their vehicle license plate registered with an All Season Long Parking Pass will receive automated gate opening as they approach the Toll Booth. If you haven't registered your license plate, drop by Guest Services or any Sellers Window.

I saw a comment on Facebook, what if someone has a pass but drives a different car?

I would assume that you just present the pass as you normally would. From reading it, it seems that registering the license plate is just an optional thing to speed up entry if you usually arrive in the same car every time.

Some toll roads are now using toll-by-plate, where cameras at the toll plaza capture the license plate. Typically, one can set up an account online, register a license plate number to the account, and deposit money to be used to pay tolls; if no such account exists for the license plate, or one does but it has an insufficient balance, then a bill is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.

I'd imagine that CW is using similar technology here for capturing the license plate.

I think it'd be easier to use something like an EZ Pass

An EZ Pass Transponder costs at least $20.  With a common Cedar Fair mark up, you are looking at probably $35 for a transponder.  Or you can just register your license plate in 2 or 3 minutes.  Whichever you prefer!

For increasing throughput, a license plate camera system is an order of magnitude cheaper than constructing additional toll lanes.

Many parking lots are capturing license plate images these days, both for automated payments and for added security. Exiting any of the lots at John Glenn Columbus International Airport is impossible if the license plate you punched in with doesn't match the one you're exiting with, as I found out after waiting 10 minutes for a malfunction to be cleared.

Transponder systems are cheaper for toll roads with hundreds of thousands of transactions per day, but there's probably not much cost benefit at an amusement park's traffic volumes.

E-ZPass transponders cost about $10 wholesale, though 6C passive sticker transponders for newer toll systems are a lot cheaper (<$1). I wouldn't want to see amusement parks go back to stickers for visitors, as this limits the vehicle(s) you can visit with and can be intrusive.

This is entirely off-topic, but for anyone needing an E-ZPass transponder (eg. for the IL Tollway, Chicago Skyway, OH Turnpike, or PA Turnpike), Massachusetts is the cheapest state to obtain one from. The transponder is mailed free with $20 in prepaid tolls. Beware of states like Indiana & Ohio that charge a monthly service fee.
