As you may be aware when KI opened in 1972, the entrance to the park did not include the I Street Restaurant on the second floor. I was looking over building codes, and noticed that the loading requirements for a restaurant far exceeded the loading requirements for the roof of a building, in terms of psf for a live and dead load. I was curious on whether the entrance was originally designed for a restaurant, since the first floor structure has remained the same since the park’s opening. With that curiousity, was the main entrance originally built with a second floor eatery in mind, or did they have to modify the overall structure to add that in?
