Red Shirt, White Shorts, and a Silly Hat

The year was 1979, I had just turned 9 years old and for my birthday, my brothers and sisters had arranged for the entire family to go to Kings Island. Mom made sure that we all dressed in the same attire for the trip--Red shirt, white shorts, and a silly hat--this was the ritual for any trip like this. After all, there were 9 of us to keep track of!

When we got to the park, I can remember looking at the map and wanting to ride the Scooby-Doo, and the Enchaned Tunnel. I had never been in a park so big before, and I was amazed at how many rides there were! After riding Scooby-Doo--I was a little scared--however, my brothers decided it was time for me to ride "a big boy ride". This ride was none other than the newly opened rollercoaster,The Beast...the longest, fastest, highest wooden rollercoaster ever built. Not knowing what to expect, I willingly agreed. To simply ride this coaster would have been an accomplishment for me, but my brothers wanted to make sure that I experienced everything, so I got in the front seat. I remember pulling out of the station and starting the climb up the first hill, only to be followed by a prolonged look at a very small tunnel as we waited for the last car to clear the lift chains...I have never been more scared in my life, before, or since. After that ride, I was hooked on rollercoasters and made it a point to ride each one before we left that night.

Over the years, throughout many season passes, I have made it a point to go at least once per year, to ride the coasters by myself. To celebrate the love of coasters that I found so many years ago, on a coaster called, The Beast.

Chris V. from Hebron, KY will receive two tickets to Paramount's Kings Island. Winners are randomly selected. Submit your entry!

Stay tuned for our next issue in two weeks!
