So what does that have to do with starting school after Labor Day?

As long as the schools have 180 (is it 180??) days of class, education is not being compromised.

What is the point of that statement?

Maybe let individual communities decide what works best for them?

Some communities would decide schools should be earlier, some later and some year round.
