2008 Math and Science Days

Featured Replies

I was just clicking around on Kings Islands website and then I found this under the concerts and events section and clicked on education days and the math and science days will be on May 2, 9, and 16. All of these days are on Friday's and it says that the event is open to the public.

Yes. This was briefly mentioned in another thread. The park will be open to the public on Fridays in May. Those days will also serve, as you mentioned, as the Math and Science days for area schools. Schools can take field trips to Kings Island and learn about some of the science of an amusement park. I got to go to Kings Island on a field trip my senior year, a couple of days before graduation for AP Physics. The best part was, since we were a few days from graduation, we didn`t have any assignments to do while at the park.

Math and Science days seems like a good idea but I think it may be too little. Why not go ahead and turn it into a full fledged festival of sorts. Look at some of the other parks that have great success with festivals. Dollywood and Silver Dollar City both fill the operating season with festivals in fact there's very little time at those parks that isn't part of a festival. Not saying Math & Science days are a bad idea I do think however if they made it a month long or more event it would target more. Perhaps even a Trekkie event (though i'm not a fan) could draw a big crowd.

One of the problems with being open during weekdays in May is staffing. Because a large majority of the seasonal workforce is high school and college age, they can`t operate the park on weekdays in May at any where near capacity. By opening to the public on these math and science days, the park could potentially draw in more people resulting in higher revenues for the park.

But there simply isn`t a large enough draw in the Cincinnati area to justify a "festival" of sorts for the education days. It works for Dollywood and Silver Dollar City because those parks are situated in a more touristy area then what Cincinnati and Kings Island are in.

I think they call it that just to give it a name for the school board to allow the kids to go. I think its great for the kids to go as a group together. It is something they can all share at the end of a long hard year of school together. What more could you ask for as a end of the year bash. I wish I was able to do this when I was in school. :D

A couple years ago we came in on a Friday evening in May, checked in a hotel then went to KI which was a Math and Science Day. It was great the crowds were low but as I was talking to a parent from the Home School Program she said that the park was rotating ride operations and had limited food choices during the early part of the day. So keep that in mind if you think you may go during the day to one of those events.

I have been to Math and Science days many times, at parks from Cedar Point to Six Flags Great Adventure to Kings Island to Quassy.

Please know that, particularly for physics students, these are from from fun, frolicky non-educational days. The opportunities for real life learning abound.
