over the weekend while you were enjoying kic second coming, i was in the mountains of slovakia.

the pics do not do justice to the awesome beauty of the scenery here. i'll attach a few pics anyway.

slovenskyraj010.jpg

this is a mountain lake at the resort at dedinka. the rain and fog really hampered the clarity of the pics.

slovenskyraj015.jpg

you expect me to get in that! oh well, if i can ride ttd, i can ride this.

slovenskyraj019.jpg

we have started our ascent to the peak.

slovenskyraj029.jpg

what!! i thought we were going to the top of the mountain, not down and up the next peak.

i don't remember ki's skilift being this long.

slovenskyraj035.jpg

like i said, the fog really hampered the photo op's. you can still see how wonderful this country really is.

slovenskyraj134.jpg

now to the "dobsinska ladov jaskyna", dobsinska ice cave. when you are 20 meters from the cave entrance,

you start feeling cold. when you get up close you still have snow on the outside. remember, this is august!

slovenskyraj139.jpg

slovenskyraj140.jpg

slovenskyraj145.jpg

slovenskyraj146.jpg

the pics do not capture the magnitude of this chunk of ice. it is 110,000 cubic meters in size.

the ice has been here for 1000's of years. under normal circumstances, this ice will never melt.

it is essentially a glacier that is trapped in a cave.

slovenskyraj150.jpg

this is ana. she was my tour guide and translator.

slovenskyraj163.jpg

slovenskyraj190.jpg

you can see here that as water seeps in from above, it immediately freezes. this ice mass will just continue

to grow.

dobsinska ice cave

here is a link to learn more about this cave.

i have more from another cave but, i will enter it as a different tr as i don't want this to get too long.

now it was on to the jasovska jaskyna. jasovska cave. it is in the town of jasov, slovakia.

there was a "hrad" or castle at the top of the hill. it is deteriorated to the point that there is nothing left

to see. we entered the cave at the bottom of the mountain. we exited at the top. the whole mountain is hollow.

there are markings in the cave that date back to 1000 a.d.. more on this cave can be found at the following link.

i have taken over 3000 pitures in slovakia in the time i have spent here. it is hard to choose which ones to share.

i am gaining a lot of experience with my new nikon D40. i am learning the language slowly.

the people here are wonderful. i find here a sense of community that america has long lost.

it is really something you must experience to appreciate.

You know I thought the same thing about a "Bob Ross" painting and all the happy little trees.

Love the pics, now I must ask is this a business or pleassure trip? I travel quite a bit and have not heard of much tourism in Slovakia.

it is business. this is my 4th trip over here for a total of 5 1/2 months since last october. most have never even heard of slovakia.

it is a little gem in the heart of europe. the entire country only has 5.5 million people. in the states we have cities with more people.

the people here are very friendly. i have made quite a few friends here.

there are mountains to climb, caves to explore, castles to see and rivers to raft. most of these are within a couple hours drive.

you can take buses or trains almost anywhere. the transit system here is great. many people here do not drive. there is no

need to.

if you can dig it up, i did a tr the first time i came over. it shows more of the scenery here in the city of Kosice.

it is one of the oldest cities in this part of the world. it has an unbelievable charm.

i have requested a transfer here, but the company has not yet given me an answer.

I think that the mist added to the pictures, very nice. I have not had a chance to visit that area of Europe very much, it is spectacular. Also if you find yourself with an extra two days, there is a place in Vienna Austria called Wiener-Prater http://www.wiener-prater.at/GeneralInformation.php?LI=1 . It is like a stationary carnival, it is all pay to play but I think it is reasonable. I especially enjoy the trains and the Hochschaubahn http://www.rcdb.com/ig1103.htm . Very nice pics, I am looking forward to more.

i have checked out the park in vienna online along with other parks in the area. we decided to go to vidampark in budapest, hungary.

we are going tomorrow. it is a 3 hour drive from Kosice. you can look it up at rcdb.

my last trip over i spent 24 hrs. in vienna. i visited several jewish holocaust museums and went to the music verein. it was the 1st

classical music concert i had ever been to. the music verein is considered one of the top 3 classical music venues in the world.

the other 2 are in boston and italy.

^You did better in Vienna without going to Wiener-Prater, like I said it is like a stationary carnival. The Orchestra is better than any I have been to, and The Boy Choir is also some thing to behold. I was also going to mention Vidampark, but you don't hear too many people clamoring to go to Hungary. You have to ride T-Rex and let me know how it is, and don't forget Hullamvasut, the brakemen are a little on the wild side. Keep up with pictures, you make it look very natural. I like that better than post card, even though yours can be turned into post cards.

^My wife would say no, but I am sure I get some sleep some time during the day. My work in the US requires me to work at night, but I travel a lot over seas. (That actually keeps my internal clock from unraveling) Right now I am going back and forth to Germany every two to three weeks for about four days at a time. That will stop here soon and I will be able to stay home for two months, and then a long stay in Germany of six weeks starting the second week of January. Who knows what will happen after that. I have been all over the world, but most of my work has kept me in Europe. Denmark is my favorite, but now I know where to go when I am in the area that you are in. I have never seen the caves, and it looks incredible.

i am coming to the end of a 6 week stay. that is about my limit for being away from home.

the next time i come here, i will be bringing my wife. she has never been out of the states.

her grandfather was slovak and she has been dying to come here.

my travels have been slovakia and russia. that is one country i was glad to get out of.

i spent a month there. my only time in germany was an 8 hour layover at munich airport.

i am told that prague in the czech republic is a must see city. if i fly delta, i can schedule a 24 hr. layover

there.

i want to see paris. i always had this desire to have a glass of wine at a sidewalk cafe by the Eiffel Tower.

just like in the movies.

Russia would be tough right now, wanting to leave is understandable. Yes you did hear right that Prague is a great place to visit, very cultural and the markets are a lot of fun. As for Germany? Well I think I have seen enough of it for now, but work must go on. (12 days left until I go back). And the best for last. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go to Paris WITHOUT your wife. A glass of wine in a sidewalk café' is wonderful, but a trip would not be complete without a dinner at Le Jules Verne on the tower. http://www.lejulesverne-paris.com/ Just remember not to look or act like tourists too much, the French are a lot different to tourists than they are to a visitor. Just relax and act like you have been there before and you will have a great time. Last but not least: Did you make it to Vidampark? and how was it?

we have a lot of frenchman in our company. they take a lot of patience to deal with. usually want to strangle them.

i have been here in Kosice long enough that i curse the tourists like a local. i blend in real well until i have to talk.

then my cover is blown.

i'm leaving in a few minutes to go to vidampark.

i'll have a tr tomorrow.
