The Interpreter
BAINBRIDGE -- The Skyscraper observation tower that has loomed above Geauga Lake Park for 35 years has disappeared. That will leave no visible sign of the former park above the Geauga County treetops anymore. The photos show the last shot of the 1974-era Itamin Skyscraper as it stood in June, 2008 and the crane that dismantled it the past two weeks. "The owner of the tower began dismantling it last week, as it was to be removed from the grounds, according to the terms of the sale," said Cedar Fair spokesman Robin Innes Wednesday.... Two roller coasters -- the Raging Wolf Bobs and the Big Dipper -- remain on the grounds. The Wolf Bobs were sold for scrap and had been partially dismantled earlier this year. The Big Dipper remains intact. Innes was asked about the status of the hand-carved, 1926 vintage Marcus Illions carousel that also remains on the grounds. He said it is still there and is in the process of being refurbished and will be moved later to another Cedar Fair-owned park.... Innes said there are no new developments in Cedar Fair's attempts to sell the amusement park grounds for some kind of development. In addition, Cedar Fair is still marketing its Worlds of Fun in Kansas City and its Valleyfair in Shakopee, Minn.... http://www.wkyc.com/news/regional/akron_ar...326&catid=
DropZone99
Itanim... I wander if Skyscraper will be going to another Cedar Fair Park? I could see it going to Canada's Wonderland, Dorney Park, Valley Fair, or World's of Fun. Same with the Carousal, It would be nice if KI got it. The Interpreter
Skyscraper was sold to a third party, probably for scrap.
PhantomTheater
A sad nonexistent sight now in Aurora. I as well as many who grew up in north east Ohio, remember the thrill of spotting Skyscraper for the first time when driving down Aurora Rd. Much like you all have with the Eiffel Tower. Hopefully, the Dipper does not disappear as well.
Touchdown
So, looking at the thrown away comment... What CF park needs a carousel? Im guessing not CP (has 3,) KI (has 2,) and CGA.
flightoffear1996
KI doesnt need another merry go round.
PhantomTheater
Cedar Point had four at one time, Frontier town carousel was moved to Dorney in the mid 90's, well most of it anyway. It would be nice to see a carousel back there again.
gigacoaster2k
Cedar Point has three carousels. When it comes to historical preservation, you can never have too many of one thing. Kat has gotten me tuned in to the world of carousels, and seeing one scrapped right now would likely break my heart.
Touchdown
CP's frontier carousel building is now a haunt location, I doubt they would bring it back there.
The Interpreter
And California's Great America is for sale, as are Worlds of Fun and Valleyfair, so you can almost certainly scratch them off the list....
Touchdown
I continue to think that WoF and VF! was just put on token sale by the company though, CGA on the other hand... But that is not why I put CGA on the no for the ride, it already has a double decker Columbia Carousel and if its like its sister in Chicago has another carousel in the fair section too bringing its total to 2 (really 3) carousels. Or if they removed the extra, still doesn't need another one.
violakat03
Michigan's Adventure doesn't appear to have a carousel, according to the North American carousel census (from the National Carousel Association: http://nca-usa.org/census/census-INAC.html). It also appears that Gilroy Gardens doesn't have one. WOF only has a metal carousel, they could use a hand-carved wood. I fully believe any quality amusement park should have a classic wood or modern wood carousel. There are some parks I want to visit specifically to ride their carousels, especially the few remaining brass ring carousels such as at Knoebels and Fun Spot. The Interpreter
Cedar Fair does not own Gilroy Gardens, but only manages it under a management contract...and, as pointed out earlier, Worlds of Fun is for sale....
violakat03
Michigan's Adventure it is, then.
