Favorite Hotel @ Kings Island

I've been to most of them in the Mason area and so far for me the best was where my group stayed this year, the Hyatt. It was a little pricey, but splitting the cost with my brother and sister made it very reasonable. We hadn't been on a vacation together in over 20 years. The room had two double beds, a pull-out couch, a 42" flat screen TV, and a fridge. The free breakfast was pretty good too. I also in the past have stayed at the Best Western when it was a Ramada, and it was okay. If you don't mind driving the extra distance, the Franklin/Middletown area has a couple of good places to stay as well. Back in 1974, we stayed at the Days Inn (called 8 Days Inn back then) in Monroe. It's now a Howard Johnson's.

I live over three hours from KI, so there is no way I spend the time and gas money to make a one day trip, so I stay in a hotel to maximize. I do not stay in anything 'upscale' because I rarely spend time in the hotel; I am there for KI. I just want a safe place for my stuff and no critters to come home with me.

My experiences:

-Last year in August my group and I stayed at 'Days Inn Kings Island' off Mason Montgomery Rd. I booked online through Wyndham Rewards, and reserved a room several weeks in advance for an extra 20% off; the room cost 30 some dollars including tax. But I did get what I paid for--dirty and worn out room, run down property, broken ice machines, and skimpy breakfast. Never will return or suggest to others, especially since prices are higher this year.

-In April we stayed at Americas Best Value Inn in Mason. I booked online in advance, and good thing I did because prices kept increasing as my check in date approached. The hotel is in a quiet location and an easy drive to KI. Unfortunately only a small gas station is in walking distance and civilization is a short drive away. The hotel and rooms are very clean and the breakfast was amazing. The rooms were spacious and had refrigerators. There is even an indoor pool but small. Their cancellation policy sucks. Overall, a great hotel for a small price.

-In June we stayed at Best Western off Mason Montgomery Rd. The above hotels at the time cost more and offered less. I booked online using their reward program. I also enrolled for a special offer--stay two separate times between select dates and get one night free between select dates. I really liked the decor of the rooms and the in room microwave and refrigerator; I had a basic room. However, this hotel tried to have a little of everything--indoor pool, fitness center, and hot breakfast, so I felt like it suffered in each in--the breakfast was lame (with only 'flaked' cereal, bread, and eggs), the juice was out for at least two days, and food cannot leave the dining room. A lot of things are in walking distance, but trying to get to KI via the highway is rough, especially during rush hour, because of a light on Mason Montgomery.

I for one like the Kings Island Resort. Its an older hotel, no doubt, but its clean, rates are cheap, they got an indoor hot tub and pool that stays open till midnight, a full service restaurant and bar called "Coasters", and transportation to and from the park via shuttle busses. I stayed there in August of '08 and had a blast!
