coasterdime
There are so many things I miss, many of them have already been mentioned. The easiest thing was the attention to detail with landscaping and theming. There was stuff like knee-high hedges along the walks, millions of flowers and plants, (many more than today) and how each area had very distinct atmosphere and music. I remember a GIANT orange and blue circus tent. I miss the Sky Ride...although I think International Street looks better without it. I actually made it to one of the dolphin shows at SWC, right behind International Showplace. There was also a neat airplane stunt show sometime in the 70's. It included skydivers, and a VERY close fly by.... involving the Eiffel Tower. Cool stuff. As far as the rides go, I never had the nerve to ride Rotor, but I remember waiting for my brothers to ride...and hearing screams as the floor dropped. (I finally rode a Rotor at Kennywood, I just didn't find it that interesting) Wheel of Fortune was a trabant, located next to Kings Mill, roughly where Reptar now sits. I miss the flying shoes, and Tumble Bug. In fact, now that I think of it, there were a TON of flats in Oktoberfest! The Zodiac used to scare the he** out of me. When I was young, this thing seemed impossibly tall. I'm pretty sure we lost this ride after the '86 season. It was relocated to Wonderand Sydney. (formerly Austrailia's Wonderland, I think) I really miss Screamin' Demon's light show. There was a set of chaser lights. They first flashed "forward," blinked, and then would chase "backwards." Speaking of light shows. Does anyone else remember the colored lights in the final drop of the flume? I always thought that was neat. Ok, I've rambled on long enough. This is a cool topic, and I could've wriiten twice as much.
FOF
According to an earlier post, the website http://home.fuse.net/brock/KI81Beast.html not only has pictures of The Beast, but also of Screamin Demon and The Racer. Unless I need some more sleep, I can not seem to find these pictures of The Racer and Screamin Demon. Heres the link with all the pictures on it, http://home.fuse.net/brock/KI1981.html
M & M Productions
I also remember when they had The Beast's paw prints painted to the coaster I also remember The Vortex. I'm thinking there were other's?
PKI_V1
I miss Kenton's Canal Boat thingy i could ride that ride all day.
PKI Homey
FOF, great link. It's cool to see the Screamin' Demon and The Bat in their heydays! Unfortunately, the SD was relocated in my small local amusement park and they are too poor to fix it and get it working again. Good pic of the Zodiac. I wonder if there are specs out there about the Zodiac, like the height? I remember The Beast paw prints and I believe The Vortex had a similar path but was a robotic hand with coaster track in its grips. Coasterdime, you are absolutely correct, the attention and detail to the theming was much better then. MommaBeast
does anyone remember the German animated figures that were outside of one of the buildings over at Octoberfest? I think it was a male and female sitting down and eating. The male would lift and lower his glass to the table. Whomever said they miss Hong Kong Phooey, I am with you. One of my favorite cartoon characters. I remember those German animated figurines like it was yesterday! Oh, how the memories are starting to flood my mind... MommaBeast
I also rember the train ride being a bit more intereting then it is today. Bryon The train was infinitely more interesting than it is today! I keep telling my kids how it used to be: "Now when we rounded this corner, these guys used to come out shootin...." They just look at me and roll their eyes. The train ride was interactive and fun. Now it's just an excuse I use to rest my tired feet. MommaBeast
I rember walking under a long tunnel of greenery that was wavy like a snake.. I also remember my mon being the beatle freak she is, Making us watch a beatles movie there called a hard days night, it was a documentary of the beatles. My parents would not let me ride The Bat as I wanted to so bad, they thought it was to dangerous for us to ride. I also rember the train ride being a bit more intereting then it is today. Bryon I remember the Ivy tunnel, it's still there you can just eat there now. Does any one remember the Hanna-Barbera Rainbow? Here is picture's of the Train ride theming, http://extremepki.houstonthrills.com/history_photos.php Ivy tunnel?? Where? Granted, I don't get to the HB side much, so if it's there, I'll have to make a special trek to check it out. Could be I've seen it a dozen times before and it didn't register. Imagine that. MommaBeast
And, the Zodiac, man what a ride! I was terrified of riding that one. Yes - I'd have to agree with Homey on that one - I had a really evil friend who would get us spinning like Wanda's Cauldron's-- except that on the Zodiac you hung by a chain and you were what 90-100 feet up? - and then my former friend would grab the center wheel to get the chain to bunch up and then snap drop down again - almost like snapping the Flyers - yeah that was a white knuckler when you got spinning on that thing... Where'd that Zodiac go? thought I saw a picture of it in an Alvey video one time... Are there any pictures available of Zodiac and Flight Commander? It's right next to the Busy Town Grill by the HB enterance next to the Eiffel Tower. It used to connect into Rivertown but it's now shorter and just ends into a fence. I used to always go through there as a kid.

bwware
Skylab isnt all that old! I loved the heck out of that ride! I make it a point to ride the one in Ceder Point and Chicago's Six Flags everytime I go! Really wish they didnt take that one away! Am I dreaming, but when that ride first opened, didnt it go totally upside down? But in later years it would just go shy of the upside down route?
M & M Productions
The skylab when I was younger I rode that ride as much as possible was one of my favorites.
Euclid Beast
Here's one of my favorite memories from the mid-eighties -- It was a blazing hot summer day and the family took an unexpected trip to the park--At that time, there was this very cool Reds gift shop located directly across from Kenton's Cove Keelboat Canal... This particular afternoon the Reds had a pitcher on the mound by the name of Mario Soto, a hard throwing right handed pitcher who was brilliant on a series of sub-par Reds teams... For years, the Reds had languished in last place as a series of mistakes had been made, starting with the loss of Pete, and continuing with the dismantling of the rest of the Big Red Machine... (Can you say "Dick Wagner"?)... Anyway, on this day, the park was busy and there was a pretty good sized crowd hanging around the Reds souvenier shop... As we approached, you could hear a radio broadcast from the store - and the very tense voice of Marty Brenneman as he was finishing out the inning -- Reds were winning, but the opponent (who escapes me) had No runs and No hits exiting the 7th inning... Holy smoke... Mario Soto, long suffering Reds pitcher, was on the verge of history... The crowd was intense as more and more people gathered into an around the shop - Cheers were louder with each strike - And at the end of eight innings, he was still pitching a no hitter... Of course if you are a Reds fan, you'll remember that Soto gave up a homer in the ninth and never did get the elusive no hitter that he deserved; but to this day, he'll never know how he was cheered on in a little corner in Rivertown, Kings Island, USA..
